Corals extract calcium carbonate from seawater to build their skeletons, which over time compact and solidify into limestone. It wasn’t hard for skilled sailors to point these out even from a distance due to their distinctive shape. Today, the Pillars of Hercules serve more as a tourist attraction and historical site than as a navigation tool.
