The best snorkel spots in the Grenadines

Tobago Cays

In the southern Grenadines lies a dreamy cluster of five uninhabited islands—Baradal, Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Petit Tabac, and Jamesby—called the Tobago Cays. These islets are all embraced by the 1,400-acre Tobago Cays Marine Park. Now, what makes this a snorkeler's haven? Well, apart from the abundance of coral reefs, it's a protected zone, meaning you're in for a show of unique sea life.

Aerial Boat Saint Vincent Cays

There are no airports in the Tobago Cays, so it's all about boat vibes. But trust me, that boat trip takes your snorkeling game up a notch. The waters? Calm and crystal clear, setting the stage for a grand show of sea life. We're talking coral galore, sea turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, barracuda, and a vibrant cast of reef fish. Nurse sharks might even make a cameo.

Now, the best part—tour options in abundance! Day trips, guided tours, catamaran cruises – take your pick to explore all the Grenadines, including the Tobago Cays. Ideal for beach-lovers seeking a snorkeling adventure beyond the ordinary. And here's a tip: if the Tobago Cays are on your radar, don't skip the 2.5-mile Horseshoe Reef. It's a snorkeling fiesta wrapped around these charming islets. So, grab your gear and get ready for a splash in paradise! 🏝️🐠

Bequia

Bequia, the charming little slice of paradise that packs a punch! This petite seven-square-mile island is like the hidden gem of the Grenadines, located just 10 miles away from Saint Vincent. It's a magnet for both yacht enthusiasts and avid divers and let me tell you, it's got some of the most pristine beaches that would make any postcard jealous.

Bequia Beach Saint Vincent

Now, if you're up for some underwater wonders, Devil's Table is your go-to snorkeling haven. This shallow reef is a hot spot for both snorkelers and scuba divers, and rumor has it, it's a breeding ground for a marine party! You’ll find spiny lobsters, hawksbill turtles, seahorses, yellowtail snapper, octopus, parrotfish, and eagle rays – all making a splash.

But that's not all – Bequia's got more snorkeling secrets up its sleeve. Head to Princess Margaret Beach, a serene spot at the southern end of Port Elizabeth. It's not just picturesque; it's a haven for tranquil snorkeling. Oh, and don't forget about Lower Bay – the laid-back sibling nearby, perfect for some shoreline snorkeling action. The reef on the western end? Trust me, it's an underwater spectacle waiting to be explored.

And since you'll already be in Bequia, why not venture to Spring Bay and Industry Bay where more fantastic snorkeling experiences await? So, gear up, dive in, and let Bequia's underwater wonders enchant you.

Mayreau Gardens

Mayreau is the tiniest inhabited island in the Grenadines! Now, don't go looking for an airport because, well, there isn't one. But hey, who needs wings when you've got the sea? The only way to hop onto this slice of heaven is by boat, making it a bit of an exclusive aquatic adventure.

Mayreau Gardens Saint Vincent

Mayreau, despite its size, has got a star attraction – Salt Whistle Bay. Imagine a beach so beautiful it feels like it's been plucked from your dreams, surrounded by lush greenery and kissed by crystal-clear waters. Ready for the kicker? Snorkeling here is like diving into a living postcard, making your SVG vacation one for the books.

Now, while you're soaking in the island vibes, make sure to swing by Mayreau Gardens. It's not your typical garden with flowers and bees; it's an underwater wonderland! Brace yourself for coral gardens that could give Eden a run for its money, flamingo tongue snails strutting their colors, sponges doing their sponge thing, and a VIP guest list featuring stingrays, barracudas, sea turtles, sharks, and an entire school of vibrant fish. Plus, the northeastern coast boasts reefs that are practically begging to be explored by boat.

Canouan

In Canouan reality seamlessly melts into dreamy white-sand beaches. Nestled in the southern Grenadines, this island is your ticket to top-notch snorkeling. With calm waters gently lapping at the shore, this area is a snorkeler's haven thanks to the protective barrier reef on the Atlantic side.

Just a breezy 280 miles (40km) south of St. Vincent, Canouan may be petite (3.5 miles long and a quarter-mile wide), but oh, does it pack a punch in the beauty department. Grand Bay Beach and South Glossy Bay Beach take center stage, and guess what? They're not just pretty faces; they're prime spots for some shore snorkeling fun. As you float along these coasts, get ready to be greeted by a vibrant cast of reef fish, intricate coral formations (hello, brain coral!), and a slew of other undersea wonders.

Carriacou Island

Carriacou, commonly referred to as "Isle of Reefs", is located in the heart of the Grenadines. With pristine waters and thriving marine wonders, this area invites you to dive into the magic of over 200 tropical fish species, each adding a splash of color to this underwater haven.

Embarking on a snorkeling escapade off Carriacou's shores unveils a world of coral beauty, featuring intricate brain coral and majestic elkhorn coral. The sponge-covered boulders add that extra touch of enchantment to your aquatic adventure.

For an unforgettable snorkeling spot, Sandy Island steals the show. Accessible by water taxi from Saint Vincent or your own yacht, this tiny atoll is a nature reserve adorned with white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees. The water, shallow for quite a stretch, is quite inviting to beginners and has reefs lying just 5 to 20 feet below the surface.

Good to know: If you plan on spending the day on Sandy Island you’ll need to bring along food and drinks (including plenty of water!), as there are no shops or restaurants nearby.

Best time to snorkel in Saint Vincent

In Saint Vincent, the snorkeling vibes are top-notch all year round! While the underwater wonders await at any time, there's a sweet spot that snorkel enthusiasts can't resist — peak season from December to April. Imagine perfect weather, abundant tour options, and a seamless setup for your snorkeling escapade. Plus, this season aligns with the dry period (January to May), ensuring less rain to interrupt your aquatic adventures. So, if you fancy less rainfall and more snorkeling bliss, peak season is your golden ticket.

Now, if you're all about that tropical climate, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has you covered. The consistent trade winds keep things cool, and temperatures hover around a delightful 80°F throughout the year.

Do You Need A Passport To Visit Saint Vincent? Find Out Here!

One of the first things you’re probably thinking about before heading to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines in the Caribbean is whether or not you’ll need a passport. The answer to that question is yes -- most international visitors, including U.S. citizens, require a passport to travel to Saint Vincent.

cliff and boat in saint vincent

In addition to a passport, travelers to Saint Vincent will need proof of their intended departure from the country, which may be requested by immigration. If you plan to visit Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on a cruise, the rules are slightly different because you will be able to travel using another Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document rather than a passport (more on this later). Having said that, it is strongly advised that visitors bring a passport in case of an emergency.

If you want to learn more about passports and other requirements for visiting Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, you've come to the right place. Read on for tips on how to have a stress-free trip to this amazingly beautiful and sunny destination!

Do I need a passport when flying to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines?

As with international travel in general, passports are required for travel to Caribbean islands such as Saint Vincent. If you don't already have a passport, you should apply for one well in advance of your planned vacation dates. In order to clear immigration, you may be required to show a return or onward ticket in addition to a valid passport. At the time of your travel your passport should be valid for at least six months past your departure date. Before heading off, ensure there’s at least one blank page left in your passport for entry stamps.

Note: U.S. citizens do not need a visa to visit Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Do I need a passport when going to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines on a cruise?

Vacationers who plan on traveling to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines as part of a cruise can either use a passport or another Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document. This includes Passport Cards, Enhanced Driver's Licenses and Trusted Traveler Programs such as Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST.

aerial view if saint vincent cruise port

If you will be traveling on a Caribbean closed-loop cruise you will be able to travel with a state-issued ID such as your driver’s license and your original birth certificate. A closed-loop cruise is a cruise that departs and ends at the same U.S. port. In this case, both your driver's license and your birth certificate will be required.

Although it is possible to travel to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, as well as some other Caribbean islands, without a passport as part of a cruise, the U.S. State Department recommends that visitors obtain a passport before international travel in the event of an unforeseen emergency that would necessitate disembarking and returning by air.

Insider tip: Got your passport ready? It's time to start planning your island getaway! Luxury resorts are a great option for a Caribbean vacation that has it all. Sandals Saint Vincent puts you in the enviable position to explore the beauty of Saint Vincent while enjoying the awesome inclusions of Sandals.

Can I use a passport card or other identification to travel to Saint Vincent?

Passport cards

A passport card is a smaller and less expensive alternative to a passport that can be used for both land and sea travel. A passport costs approximately $135 USD (for one adult), whereas a passport card costs only $55 USD. In comparison, a passport card has more information than a standard issue government ID card. However, for international air travel, U.S. passport cards are not accepted.

Trusted Traveler programs

Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs designed for frequent travelers. These programs typically include features such as expedited lanes at U.S. airports. Before being approved applicants are usually vetted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Most Trusted Traveler Programs have no minimum number of trips required for travelers to qualify. Members can enter the U.S. via automatic kiosks at select airports. The kiosk provides the traveler with a transaction receipt at which point they can make their way to baggage claim ahead of leaving the airport.

Trusted Traveler programs include:

NEXUS: Generally used to enter the U.S. from Canada through land, air and sea;
SENTRI: Generally used to enter the U.S. from Canada and Mexico by air or land;
FAST: Generally used to enter and exit the U.S. from Canada and Mexico with a commercial truck.

At time of publication, all of the above memberships can be used as identification when embarking on a cruise to St. Vincent & the Grenadines. However, none of the Trusted Traveler programs can replace a passport when flying to St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

Enhanced driver’s license

A special driver's license that can also be used for travel is known as an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL). When traveling, the state-issued EDL can be used as identification because it also shows your citizenship. An EDL is a low-cost alternative to a passport and it can be used to enter and exit the United States from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries by land or sea. The EDL card includes security mechanisms as well as other features that aim to make travel safer and more convenient. The document cannot, however, be used in place of a passport for international air travel.

Things St Vincent Is Known For & Why You Should Absolutely Visit This Island

St. Vincent & The Grenadines is known for more than just its stunning natural beauty. It is also renowned for its many cultural attractions, unique black sand beaches, luxury all-inclusive resorts, and beautiful islands. This destination is made up of 32 small islands and cays, including Saint Vincent which is the largest.

Saint-Vincent-Harbour-View

St. Vincent can best be described as a postcard-perfect and authentic island. This island has strong influences from West Africa, Europe, and other Caribbean nations like Jamaica. Vibrant and ideal for any type of vacation, this territory known as the “jewels of the Caribbean” has a lot to offer. Notably, at one point St. Vincent & The Grenadines was called “Hairouna” by early settlers, the Carib Indians. That name translates to “Land of the Blessed”.

From the amazing opportunities to go diving to the delicious island cuisine, there are plenty of reasons to vacation in St. Vincent & The Grenadines, which is more simply referred to as St. Vincent. Within this article, we've listed some of the amazing things this destination is known for that you can look forward to enjoying during your vacation there.

Expert tip: Saint Vincent is the ideal vacation destination for couples, families, groups of friends, and pretty much anyone in search of all-inclusive vacations.

Amazing things St. Vincent is known for

Scuba diving & snorkeling

Scuba diving and snorkeling are fantastic reasons to vacation in the Caribbean. Saint Vincent is one of the best locations to do both of these activities due to the vibrant coral reefs that can be found in the waters around this island. Some of the most popular spots to dive in St. Vincent & The Grenadines include Anchor Reef and Critter Corner. While diving in St. Vincent, you’re likely to see marine life such as manta rays, squid, frogfish, and sometimes reef sharks.

couple snorkeling in st vincent

Sightings when snorkeling at Anchor Reef (off the coast of Kingstown) include a rare black coral garden and plenty of sea life including sea horses and octopuses on occasion. While diving at Critter Corner, you’re likely to come across a wide variety of tropical fishes. There’s quite a lot of seagrass and boulders in this area as well — these are home to much of the marine life in this area. Critter Corner is located to the south of Kingstown, off Indian Bay Beach.

Good to know: Saint Vincent is known as the ‘Critter Capital of The Caribbean’. This means you can expect lots of marine sightings while diving here. If you plan on going snorkeling or scuba diving in St. Vincent, don’t worry too much about packing your own gear, as you can rent some on the island.

Volcanic landscapes

St. Vincent is one of many islands in the Caribbean that are volcanic in nature. In St. Vincent, the striking volcanic landscapes will certainly be something to be appreciated, particularly if you're a nature buff. One of the sights you absolutely must see in this regard is La Soufrière, St. Vincent’s highest peak (1,234 meters above sea level). It is possible to take a guided hike to the crater of the La Soufrière volcano. This can be a thrilling experience to have on this island, and it includes hiking along the Leeward Trail. This hike can take six to eight hours (round trip). Another option is taking the Windward Trail. This is considered the easier option, and it is somewhat more popular. It takes about three to four hours (round trip) to get to the crater via the Windward Trail.

The hike to the volcanic crater of La Soufrière is definitely one of the more adventurous and exciting things to do in St. Vincent. With a guided hike, which is highly recommended, you can learn about the plant and animal life in this area, and also see the rainforest, cloud forest, and captivating views of the countryside. Once you get to the crater, you’ll be able to do some exploring before making your way back down to the bottom of the mountain.

Island hopping

Island hopping -- two words you definitely want to hear during a Caribbean vacation. In St. Vincent, this is totally possible as this territory is made up of 32 different islands and cays. Nine of these are inhabited, including the mainland Saint Vincent. The second-largest island of the Grenadines is Bequia. It takes about one hour by ferry to get to Bequia from Saint Vincent, and 30 minutes on the fast ferry. Sailing and yachting enthusiasts flock to Bequia. Many sailboats and yachts can usually be seen along the coastline of this island and many other Grenadine islands. Port Elizabeth, the harbor town, is an excellent place to visit while in Bequia.

island hopping in saint vincent and the grenadines

The numerous coves and sandy beaches you can explore around the Grenadines are definitely reason enough to hop on a boat to explore. There will be plenty of stops that can be made along the way, including sand bars in the middle of the ocean. Ferry rides are available on a fairly regular basis. Many of the locals have their own small boats to get between the islands. As ferry rides are quite affordable, you might be able to visit several of the nearby islands while in St. Vincent. Some of the most popular islands of the Grenadines include Bequia, Mustique, and Canouan. The Tobago Cays in the southern Grenadines are also a good place to explore and go diving. Private boat charters are available in Saint Vincent and some of the other islands — these can make it easier to explore the Grenadines at your own pace.

Fantastic year-round weather

The Caribbean is known for its incredible weather and St. Vincent & the Grenadines is one of those places where you'll be able to soak it all in. This island has a hot, tropical climate year-round with fairly consistent hours of sunshine each month. Temperatures on this island can reach highs of around 86°F on average. There are a few notable variances in the weather across the Grenadines with the islands in the south being a bit more dry and warm as compared to those in the north.

Black sand beaches

woman on a volcanic beach in st vincent

Volcanic by nature, Saint Vincent is one of the islands in the eastern Caribbean that has unique black sand beaches. Though you may have visited beaches in the Caribbean or abroad before, the black sand on Saint Vincent’s beaches gives them a unique look and feel. You might almost convince yourself on a quiet, black-sand Saint Vincent beach that you’re a roving island explorer, discovering this location for the first time. Saint Vincent is the only island in the Grenadines with black sand, which means that throughout your Saint Vincent holiday, you’ll be able to enjoy both white sand and black sand beaches.

Expert tip: When planning a romantic getaway, consider booking well in advance, especially if you have your heart set on a warm winter getaway. The Caribbean offers a fantastic opportunity to bask in warmth during the colder holiday season while indulging in quality beach time with your loved one!

Whale watching

A trip to the Caribbean might be incomplete without some whale watching. In St. Vincent, you can sign up for a boat trip to head out on the waters for this incredible adventure. St. Vincent is known for having some stunning marine life off the coast, so you really might see some whales or other remarkable marine life during this experience. There are said to be at least seven species of whales and 11 species of dolphins in this area, so the odds just might be in your favor.

Food

You won’t run out of opportunities to try amazing food in St. Vincent. The most popular dishes on this island include ingredients like fresh seafood, spices, cassava, and more which leave quite a lot of room for the creation of memorable island delicacies. Some of the most popular local dishes on this island include:

  • Breadfruit and jackfish - Breadfruit goes well with almost anything, which is possibly why it is part of St. Vincent’s distinctive breadfruit and jackfish national dish. Roasted breadfruit and fried jackfish are included in this dish. This dish can be seen on lunch menus with a sauce made of onions, tomatoes, garlic, thyme, and other vegetables and herbs.

  • Breadfruit Meringue Pie - If you like breadfruit, you’ll love Breadfruit Meringue Pie. Shredded breadfruit, coconut milk, raisins, and currents are used to make this dish. The pie is topped with an egg meringue.

  • Madongo dumpling - This is a traditional dish made from native arrowroot along with nutmeg and coconut. In St. Vincent, this is a delicacy particularly as this country is the only place that cultivates arrowroot.

  • Buljol - This is a salad that includes shredded cod or salt fish, pepper, tomatoes, oil, and onions. There are several ways to prepare buljol and it can be eaten cold. You’ll most commonly find this dish being served at breakfast time.

  • Callaloo Soup - Callaloo is similar in flavor to spinach. It’s common practice to use coconut milk in the preparation of this healthy appetizer. Vegetables including garlic, onions, and peppers, several kinds of meats (optional), and dasheen leaves round out the recipe. Sometimes cassava, yams, and potatoes are included.

Exotic flora and fauna

Saint Vincent is one of the most beautiful and green islands in the world. The St. Vincent Botanical Gardens is one of the best places to be entirely surrounded by these beautiful greens and other brilliant floral colors. The gardens here cover around 20 acres and are home to both indigenous and exotic tropical plants and trees. Hibiscus, cinnamon, nutmeg, mahogany, palms, and even a breadfruit tree are among the plants and trees found here. The latter is said to have grown on the island from a seedling brought by Captain Bligh. History and culture

St. Vincent & the Grenadines has a rich history that includes influences from many parts of the globe. Some of the island’s cultural influences come from places like West Africa and Europe. On these islands, there are quite a few historical sites you can explore to get familiar with their roots. Many of these are located in Kingston, Saint Vincent, the capital of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. You’ll be able to see the quaint colonial mansions there that date back centuries. There are also a number of towering Gothic church spires.

Many of the islands of the Grenadines are packed with history as well. On Bequia, for example, you’ll be able to visit places like the Firefly Plantation where it’ll be possible to have a firsthand experience of crushing sugar cane to make juice. At this plantation, you can also sample the various fruits and vegetables based on what is in season and learn about the different trees in the area. If you take a guided tour, you can learn about the uses of some of the herbs and flowers in this area.

Saint Vincent fun facts

The island is named after an actual saint named Vincent

Saint Vincent is named after a Spanish saint who went by the name “Saint Vincent” Saragossa. Saragossa is said to have arrived on this island in 1498. As history tells it, the island of Saint Vincent was named after him by Columbus as an act of tribute. The name ‘Grenadines’ on the other hand actually means ‘pomegranates’ – but, in the case of St. Vincent, it refers to the small islands that are sprinkled throughout the region.

The St. Vincent Botanical Gardens is a popular stop for nature lovers. This site is also quite historical as it is actually the oldest botanical garden in the Western Hemisphere. The St. Vincent Botanical Gardens dates back to 1765 and has been on a mission to conserve rare plant life since that time.

Famous pirates have been spotted there

The Caribbean has quite a fascinating pirate history. Notably, Saint Vincent is one of the places that is known to have had pirate pop-ups in the past. Added to that, parts of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies were filmed on this island. The first three installments of the franchise are actually said to have been recorded here.
