The notion that love can find us in the most unexpected of places is certainly true for Shantoura and Nathan who met fatefully at their company’s gym. Upon first meeting, the pair kept things strictly professional. But from the outside looking in, there was no doubt that a spark — and plenty of good hearted banter — existed between the two.

According to Shantoura, “This guy would be hogging all the gym equipment! That’s how I met him. We would often talk in the gym, in that context, and then had a strictly professional friendship at work.”

Nathan remembers the same scene from his own point of view: “I was on the machine and she comes over, headphones blasting. So I asked her to take off her headset and made the introduction, and then she started asking questions about the machine. It was all very friendly and flirtatious, but not approaching the line.”

Despite their fast-growing friendship, romance wasn’t in the cards for Shantoura and Nathan just yet. Over the next decade, Shantoura would briefly relocate with the company from Atlanta to California and back again, although she didn’t decide to let Nathan in on her return right away.

“He said he noticed me in the hallway and thought ‘Huh, that’s weird, I know she left the state,’” recalls Shantoura. With Shantoura back in town, the two picked up right where they left off. But this time around, Nathan asked Shantoura on their first official date and, safe to say, the two haven’t looked back since. After a few more years of getting to know one another, Nathan finally popped the question in the comfort of their home and the wedding planning was officially set in motion!

First on the couple’s to-do list was to find a venue and destination. Shantoura and Nathan had never stayed at a Sandals Resort prior to their wedding weekend, so the two leaned into advice from friends who had. “All of our friends who were advocates of the Sandals brand always spoke so highly of their experiences. It was referred from people we trusted in our friend circle,” recalls Shantoura.

With their sights set on Sandals, Shantoura and Nathan had to further narrow down the decision to one of 17 Luxury Included® resorts.

“The harder decision was where do we go?” says Nathan. “Shantoura found two or three places. Barbados was one. Curaçao came up, and Saint Lucia. But she kept going back to Curaçao. When we looked up the island itself, we saw the beautiful architecture of the downtown and the bridge.”

Located in the Southern Caribbean, Curaçao is rich in natural beauty and features desert landscapes with rocky coastlines carved along azure waters. The vibrant-colored city of Willemstad, the island’s capital, serves as an epicenter for Dutch, English, Latin American, Asian, and Afro-Caribbean cultures. A testament to the profound melting pot that is Curaçao, “I love you” is often heard across the island in four languages, including Curaçao’s native language, Papiamento, making this the perfect locale for a destination wedding.

“For me, there was also curiosity in what they were developing through the Sandals brand,” says Shantoura. “Bringing development to that island is huge. I wanted to support that and I’m so glad we did.”

Sandals Royal Curaçao is one of the brand’s newest resorts, which brings the Sandals collection to a total of 17 Caribbean escapes. Featuring a variety of Sandals firsts, including a two-story infinity pool and eight brand-new restaurant concepts, Sandals Royal Curaçao offered Shantoura, Nathan, and their 12 wedding guests endless ways to revel in paradise.

“Without much information on the resort at the time, we were sold on the brand and then the island. When we finally did get to see the resort, it did not disappoint.” says Nathan.

With wedding planning top of mind, the couple wanted to ensure they had a trusted team that could bring their vision to life — even when they were thousands of miles away.

“We wanted a destination where there were people who were really well-versed at taking care of an event because when you’re at home, you can’t detach,” says Shantoura. “Sandals just naturally bubbled up to the top.”

From initial phone calls to the wedding weekend itself, the wedding team at Sandals Royal Curaçao was dedicated to exceeding the couple’s expectations. Upon arrival, Shantoura and Nathan quickly jumped into vacation mode with a detailed itinerary that was centered around exploring Curaçao. While the two adventured across the island — whether it was biking the Santa Barbara Estate, cruising around in a Mini Cooper, or taking a private e-bike tour through downtown Willemstad — the Sandals Weddings Team finalized all the details and began essential prep for the upcoming big day.

“My Sandals wedding planner made sure to cross every T and dot every I. It was very reassuring and affirmative, so that smoothed it out for me,” recalls Shantoura.

For the second half of their stay, Shantoura and Nathan resided in a Swim-up Butler Suite. Designed for maximum privacy, this luxurious corner suite featured dining and living areas, two bathrooms, a Tranquility Soaking Tub™ for two, and 270-degree panoramic views of the ocean, palm garden, and entire resort. With sunlight coming in from every angle, it is the ultimate hideaway for the two lovebirds.

Prior to the ceremony, the Weddings Team helped the couple host a beautiful sunset welcome party, complete with conch fritters, Blue Curaçao cocktails, and a trio of singers who covered classic R&B and neo-soul artists. A nod to the island’s rich culture, the team also used traditional brightly-colored dolls, known as Chichi (meaning “big sister” in Papiamento) as unique decor elements and gifts.

When the guests finally settled into their seats overlooking the ocean, the cool coastal breeze and warm air set the scene perfectly. Surrounded by 12 of their closest friends, Shantoura and Nathan said “I do” beneath a grand white structure, draped in billowing chiffon and secured with blooming arrangements of dusty pink roses and white hydrangeas.

Among the most magical, heartfelt moments of the entire weekend was when the bride made her grand entrance. Unfortunately, Shantoura’s dad could not travel to join the couple, so Nathan decided to meet Shantoura half-way down the aisle to walk by her side. “I kept saying ‘Oh, my family isn’t going to be here,” reflects Shantoura. “But when Nathan came and got me in the center of the aisle, I was like ‘Wait, my family is here. You are my family.’”

Shantoura’s mother and best friend were also unable to attend, so the bride found a special way to carry them both with her. Keeping with the “something borrowed, something blue, and something old” traditions, Shantoura wore a brooch from her mom and a blue ankle bracelet from her best friend.

Once the two had officially tied the knot, the real celebrations began! Guests mingled over red and white wine, champagne and Mint to Be, and Berry Happy Together signature cocktails, before sitting down to an island-inspired dinner. Selecting from Sandals Splendid Wedding Menu, the newlyweds served a hearty Surf & Turf and snapper prepared by the resort’s world-class chefs.

“I don’t think anyone left food on their plate!” said Nathan. “Between the food, the drinks, the entertainment for the night — the reception was just awesome. You couldn’t ask for a better evening.”

To align with the couple’s ethereal, and dreamy vision, the group sat for dinner at a long Captain’s table decorated in beautiful hydrangeas, roses, and blush pampas.
Despite all the excitement, Nathan and Shantoura didn’t hesitate to reflect on the exceptional service and hard work of the Weddings Team. “They worked tirelessly,” remembered Nathan. “They made it feel like we were the only ones on the resort for the ceremony and the reception. I couldn’t thank them enough and to see how happy it made her. It was beautiful, it was perfect.”

The rest of the evening followed a toast-music-dancing-toast-music-dancing pattern. As for the dance floor, let’s just say it was anything but quiet. Sparklers and glowing bistro lights illuminated the space, while the entertainment crew kept everyone on their feet. Rather than having one musical act, the couple reserved a DJ and a saxophonist! One highlight for the couple was when their friends brought in a soul train line and everyone broke out their favorite junior high school dance moves. “I was laughing, busting my gut, dancing,” laughed Shantoura.

To say the weekend was one of magic, celebration, and so much love, only begins to scratch the surface. When asked what advice they would give couples planning a destination wedding at Sandals Royal Curaçao, the answer came naturally to Shantoura and Nathan: “Live in the moment. Don’t waste your time worrying about the little stuff. You have one moment with your bride or groom — enjoy that. Live it up. Be in the moment. Be with your friends. Because when it’s all over, you have pictures but it doesn’t compare. When you focus on the memories you make, it’s a different experience.”

Much like carnivals elsewhere in the Caribbean, Curaçao’s carnival is a huge celebration of culture, music, and color. Carnival in Curaçao typically involves grand parades, catchy beats, lots of traditional elements, and exciting events that highlight the cultural and entertainment scene on this island. When is the Curaçao Carnival?

Curaçao Carnival, also known as Nos Karnaval, is usually held between January and February annually in the weeks leading up to Lent. The entire festival spans a period of around six weeks, during which time various events including parties, shows, competitions, and parades get underway on the island. The exact dates of carnival events in Curaçao vary on an annual basis, but the festival itself is always held at the same time of year.

The Curaçao Carnival 2024 dates have not been announced yet, but the 2024 carnival season is expected to take place from January 6, 2024 to February 24, 2024. The Wine Cellar is ideal if you're looking for somewhere to have a tasty lunch or a romantic dinner. The menu here is diverse and includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Some of the popular menu options at The Wine Cellar include fresh seafood such as red snapper, salmon fillet, shrimp, and scallops. On Saturdays, Kome is open for brunch and their menu includes savory and sweet options as well as classics. The menu at Kome mainly consists of Caribbean-inspired dishes made with fresh ingredients. Fusion options are available including chicken and waffles, pepper steak, burgers, and Thai chicken. Shelterrock Paradise is a Caribbean-style seafood restaurant that presents a unique dining experience. So much so that on Friday evenings, meals are cooked in coconuts! Options for the coconut dining experience include chicken, beef, shrimp, fish, seafood mix, vegetarian, and goat. Fridays are also karaoke nights.

Other than that, this restaurant opens regularly for lunch, brunch, dinner, and late-night food and drinks. You’ll feel like you’re away from it all here, in a good way, with pretty incredible views of Christoffel Mountain. There are hammocks out on the balcony, thatched-style roofs, and most importantly, delicious food and refreshing drinks. This restaurant has some of the best local food in Curaçao complete with a romantic and cozy atmosphere.

• Funchi - This savory dish is made out of cornmeal, and is comparable to polenta. It is also similar to another dish known as tutu, although black-eyed peas are not used in the making of funchi. Funchi is usually served as a side dish, but it is sometimes placed into soups.

It’s a question you have to ask. For 40 years, Sandals Resorts has continually re-imagined the luxury Caribbean experience. Every catchphrase has been used in an effort to describe the innovations as they’re rolled out — all of them true. Sandals has changed the landscape, moved the needle, thought outside the box, and created all-new boxes.

So how, after 40 years of too-good-to-believe innovations, could Sandals possibly raise the bar even a fraction more?

On June 24th, Sandals raised it by a mile.

The grand opening celebration of Sandals Curaçao Royal was literally unlike anything that had ever been seen – here or anywhere else. It’s no wonder. The celebration came as an exclamation point to a project that has been 10 years in the making, which made weekend livelier and sweeter than anyone could have expected.

But before the dancers, bands, and fireworks were set loose, the grand opening celebration began with an everyday occurrence on the most beautiful westward-facing beach in the Dutch Caribbean: the magnificent hues of a tropical sunset. On this evening, they happened to cast a glow over the all-new Awa Seaside Butler Bungalows and Kurason Island Poolside Butler Bungalows. It was as if the sun’s rays wanted to be first in line to welcome the 16th and newest property in the Sandals Resorts portfolio. The well-wishers came from everywhere.

As staff mingled with local dignitaries, and those dignitaries mingled with guests, and guests mingled with globally recognized entertainers, the sounds of a Kachu horn stopped everyone in their sandy footprints. Generations of Curaçaoans have heard the same sounds as pronouncements of important events on the island — births, bountiful harvests, and moments that demand a celebration.

The call of the horn drifted out over the all-inclusive resort, and out to sea. The anticipation in the tropical air elevated. Daylight gave way to stage lights. There, wearing a soft blue sport coat to casually align with the popular color of Curaçao, Sandals Resorts’ Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, spurned the use of a script and spoke his final words from the heart.

“We’re going to put on one crazy party for you to celebrate 10 years in the making. Have the time of your life. Welcome to Sandals Royal Curaçao.”

And that kickstarted the resort’s tagline, “Where Amazing Comes Together,” into a before-your-very-eyes celebration of culture, colors, and the return of Carnival to the island for the first time in three years. It took a decade to dream up this all-inclusive resort in Curaçao. It only took a matter of hours for people to live the dream on this beachfront 44-acre swath of Curaçao.

Iconic steel-pan artists coaxed guests into rhythmic movements, some of them into the direction of a first-of-its-kind cocktail bar reminiscent of the island’s iconic Divi tree. Guests looked skyward to Sway Performers moving like palm trees on towering 20-foot-high flowers.

Steel pans by the local legend, Konkie, and accompanying band, The Guayaberas, gave way to mashups between drummers, DJs, and renowned violinists CJ Opus and Clari Montergo. Tunes by Caribbean music producer extraordinaire, DJ Menasa, were met by the iconic sound of Nelson Braveheart’s saxophone, with pop-up acts from cultural performers from Folkloriko Ambiente Kultural. The fiery hues of the sunset were brought to life by the Phoenix Curaçao Theatrical Fire Show, mesmerizing the audience with spectacular dance choreography and elaborate costumes.

Every moment during the celebration, down to the blue-colored drinks and diversity of performers, signified the long-awaited marriage of Sandals and Curaçao. To introduce the bi-level Dos Awa Infinity Pool, which overlooks the sea from two levels, guests saw a first-of-its kind synchronized swimming routine from Curaçao’s Swordfish Synchronized Swimming Team.

The stars emerged, overhead and at eye level. Fashion designer Stan Herman has seen just about everything at worldwide showcases during his illustrious career. He’d come for the unveiling of the new Anniversary Collection of uniforms he curated for Sandals Royal Curaçao. On this night, though, he stood in complete awe of the never-befores on the resort property around him, all the while beloved Dancing with the Stars couple, Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy, made their rounds through the party and the dance floor.

The pure Curaçao energy would have made Vegas blush.

Just when the energy couldn’t possibly be lifted any higher, a global phenomenon managed to shift all attention back to the stage: Blue Man Group. The trio’s powerful drumbeats and spectacle of paint was chosen as a headliner for good local reasons. Their flourish of blue ties to what many consider the most colorful island in the Caribbean.

Jasmin van Eeden performed a stirring operatic number in sync with a spectacular fireworks show. All of it real and raw, celebratory and culturally relevant.

An even more extravagant affair, Carnival made its grand return to Curaçao for the very first time since 2019, choreographed by the award-winning Dushi Aventura with a kaleidoscopic, parade of close to 100 drummers, dancers, stilt walkers and iconic front line costumes, all handmade especially for Sandals Royal Curaçao’s grand opening. An appearance by Raynor “Raey” Lauffer, known as the Tumba King, authenticated the performance as an official event of Carnival with his winning Tumba song. In true Carnival fashion, the parade was followed by the dynamic brass band, Percussion Creative Dynasty.

Blue Curaçao flowed freely from the bars surrounding the Dos Awa Infinity Pool straight to the Decade Disco and Dessert After Party at the Beach Club. Because where else would you want to hear the vibrant music from Grammy Award-winning DJ Tracy Young, while also sensing the calming sounds of the sea 10 steps away? And on the beach, the dancing lasted longer than it does at most wedding parties. A good party does that to people, especially when the feet are in talc-smooth sand.

With any celebration comes the post-celebration. At Sandals Royal Curaçao, that meant the sun came up the next morning and lit up the colors of the sea. It provided the perfect backdrop for the stage that had been reset for yet another landmark occasion. Two visionaries, Stewart and Herman, stepped up to announce the unveiling of the new “Anniversary Collection” Team Member uniforms, a project that the legendary designer began more than a year ago.

For Sandals, the new look is another bridge connecting the company’s 40-year legacy with a look forward.

There, directly in front of the ocean, butlers and servers and hostesses and welcome staff took to the catwalk wearing the soft hues of the island shades. Looking proud, engaging, and above all, happy — as if wearing Curaçao on their shoulders and hips.

This is how the bar is raised by a mile. In re-thinking luxury, Sandals also enhances what nature has provided, like the beautiful views and warm culture. You embed them into the entire guest experience.

To the west of the country’s capital, Willemstad, you can find some of the best locations for swimming and snorkeling. We’ve listed some of our favorites below:

1. Playa Lagun

A short drive from the town of Sabana Westpunt will take you to Playa Lagun, a beach found nestled in a cove along the west coast of the island. If you’re still a bit new to snorkeling, the calm waters of this beach are the perfect place to have your first big snorkeling adventure. Early morning trips may yield special rewards! There is a greater chance that you’ll get to swim with the green turtles at that time of day.

Snorkelers will enjoy the turquoise waters and the array of snapper, parrotfish, moray eels, and other sea creatures that have made this beach their home. Visibility is also decent at this location, just another reason you won’t want to miss out on visiting this beach while in Curaçao.

2. Little Knip Beach (Kleine Knip or Playa Kenepa Chiki)

Along the north coast of Curaçao lies Little Knip Beach, also known as Kleine Knip or Playa Kenepa Chiki. On this lovely beach, you’ll appreciate the amenities and services offered, such as the parking lot made for your convenience and a rental service that offers umbrellas, snorkeling equipment, and even beach chairs.

Once you get to the beach, you can hop into the water and head to the left side of the bay, which is the best place to snorkel. Beneath the waves, you’ll find many varieties of coral, barracuda, angelfish, octopus, pufferfish, and more. Watch out for rocks along the way and hard coral buried beneath the sand.

3. Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi)

Playa Piskado, also known as the “Fisherman’s Beach”, is a popular snorkeling spot where vibrant coral reefs can be found below the surface. Thanks to the wide variety of fish on this beach, it is a favorite for fishermen looking for the catch of the day. You’ll get to be a part of the experience as you dive beneath the waters and swim among the fishes and the friendly sea turtles of Playa Piskado.

After exploring the ocean, you can lounge under the shady manchineel trees and, on weekends, indulge in some treats from the snack bar. For a small fee, you can rent beach chairs and access the restrooms on-site. Overall, this is a great beach spot to spend a couple of hours snorkeling, swimming, and lounging on the beach.

4. Playa Forti (Sweet Alice)

Playa Forti is a pebbly beach that is only a swim away from Playa Piskado. Unlike Piskado, it is usually not very crowded, which gives you plenty of room to swim amongst the moray eels, squid, sea turtles, and spotted drums.

The coral reef can be found about 30 feet below the surface. It is mainly made up of cup corals joined by tube and elephant ear sponges. Cliff jumping is popular in this area as the beach has cliffs ranging from 40-75 feet tall. You can watch the cliff jumpers when you’re done snorkeling, or you can give it a try yourself if you find somewhere safe to do so.

5. Director’s Bay

Director’s Bay is a beautiful beach in the southern part of Curaçao. Director’s Bay was privately owned until the 1980s when it became public property. Now, Director’s Bay is one of the best locations for snorkelers, divers, and beachgoers to enjoy.

This beach is located between the Tugboat Wreck and another dive site called Small Wall. Its unique location makes it a cozy home for a wide variety of marine animals such as barracudas, frogfish, pufferfish, seahorses, angelfish, and many more. Snorkelers and scuba divers alike will certainly enjoy the perks of this coral stone beach.

6. Tugboat

Tugboat is a shipping wreck that sank more than 30 years ago in Curaçao. Since then, vibrant corals and tube sponges have made its surface their home. Since Tugboat lies only about five meters below the surface, it can easily be explored by snorkelers and scuba divers.

You will see lots of shrimp, yellowtail, octopus, seahorses, and scorpionfish swimming in and around this shipwreck. Excursions such as reef snorkel tours are exciting adventures led by fun, experienced tour guides that can tell you all about the island and Tugboat.

7. The Blue Bay

This quiet, white sand beach on the west coast of Curaçao is a great place to unwind, relax and enjoy the day. For a small entrance fee, you can lounge on the beach or go snorkeling and catch a glimpse of sea animals such as blue tangs, squid, crabs, wrasses, groupers, and sea turtles.

If you’re an experienced snorkeler, you might want to check out the drop-off at Blue Bay where you will find some wonderful coral formations and even more colorful fishes. This beach is equipped with a restaurant and restroom facilities.

8. The Blue Room

The Blue Room is a cave in western Curaçao that gets its name from the effects of the sunlight as it refracts off the water’s surface. The effect makes you feel like you are diving in a sea of the bluest water. It’s best to visit this cave in the late afternoon, at about 4-5 p.m., to catch the full vibrance of the sun’s rays on the water.

You will enjoy the wonders of this picturesque cave and come face to face with fishes such as the Glassy Sweepers. You can take a boat trip to the Blue Room, swim there, or even hike to the location.

9. Playa Kalki (Alice In Wonderland)

Playa Kalki is a wonderful snorkelling site in Westpunt, Curaçao. It should take you less than an hour to get to this beach from Curaçao’s capital of Willemstad. Playa Kalki is an ideal location for a fun-filled and relaxing day of snorkeling and scuba diving.

Parking is free and this beach houses a snack bar and a dive shop. Be sure to wear some solid shoes for the steep path to the beach. About 30 feet into the ocean lies a reef that you can explore and find fishes and other sea life including stingrays, frogfish, parrotfish, and barracuda.

10. Klein Curaçao

Klein Curaçao is a small, tropical island about six miles off the coast of the main island of Curaçao. If you’re looking for good snorkeling in Curaçao, this is a great place to go. It only takes about two hours to and from the mainland and boat tours are usually provided from the nearby Caracas Bay and Spanish Waters.

This island remains uninhabited and untouched, which adds to its authentic nature. Snorkelers can enjoy the clear waters at this snorkeling spot as well as the sights of butterflyfish, flounders, bonefish, sea turtles, coral reefs, and many other aspects of marine life.

The best time to snorkel in Curaçao

Generally, the best time to visit Curacao is between the months of mid-December and mid-April, which is the island's peak season. There’s usually a lot more going on the island around this time, which can make your vacation more exciting overall.

If you’re looking to spend most of your time in Curaçao snorkeling, though, January to April would be the best time for this particular activity. While Curaçao is usually pretty dry, especially compared to some of the other Caribbean islands, there is a lower chance of rain during the first half of the year. Temperatures are also much milder between January and April compared to the summer months, making this the best timeframe for outdoor activities like snorkeling. Trade winds from the east, particularly in the spring, also tend to cool things down a bit.

Sightings around this dive site include a vast number of diverse and impressive hard coral formations, several soft coral species, and a range of sea life including parrotfish, triggerfish, angelfish, porcupine fish, chubbs, crabs, shrimp, sea turtles, stingrays, moray eels and more. Divers who are especially lucky may also spot the occasional whale shark making its way through this area.

2. Alice In Wonderland (Playa Kalki)

Best for divers of all skill levels

The Alice in Wonderland dive site in Curaçao is also known as Playa Kalki. This is a popular shore dive easily accessible from the beach. The Alice in Wonderland site is loved by both snorkelers and scuba divers.

This great dive site is especially easy to find — there’s actually a large rope connected to the dock that divers can follow to get to the reef. The rope spans about 30 feet and makes this site a fun feature for beginners. The reef at Playa Kalki has a drop-off from 30 feet to 100 feet. Divers can expect to see a variety of marine life here including trumpetfish, pufferfish, frogfish, moray eels, tangs, parrotfish, stingrays, and more.

3. Mushroom Forest

Best for intermediate divers

The Mushroom Forest gets its name from the large, hard coral heads that can be found there. The coral heads have a mushroom-like appearance and make this dive site in Curaçao really stand out from others.

You’ll need to travel by boat if you plan on doing the Mushroom Forest dive while in Curaçao. To get there, you’ll simply have to take a short boat ride off the west coast, or a longer one off the east coast if you’ll be staying on that side of the island. The Mushroom Forest is protected by large surrounding cliffs, so you don’t usually have to worry about strong currents. While diving here, you can expect to see marine life including snapper, lobster, groupers, porcupine fish, moray eels, sea turtles, and more. There’s also an other-worldly cave known as ‘The Blue Room’ next to the Mushroom Forest that is also worth exploring while there.

4. The Superior Producer

Best for advanced divers

Selecting the best dive site to visit in Curaçao truly comes down to deciding what you’re hoping to see and the type of experience you’re looking to have. Divers looking for a shipwreck scuba spot will love the Superior Producer. This dive site appeals to more experienced divers as the wreck itself is about 100 ft (30m) beneath the surface.

The Superior Producer is a 400-ton, 165-foot long cargo ship that sunk in 1977 off the coast of Curaçao. The sinking of this ship was a major loss as it was filled with merchant goods, including perfume, whiskey, and clothing. The ocean has totally claimed this cargo ship, and, today, its remains are covered with the most beautiful coral. Among these artificial reefs, divers are likely to spot snapper, jacks, barracuda, tarpon, sea turtles, and more. The Superior Producer is less than 500 feet off the coast of Otrobanda, which is on the west end of Curaçao.

Best for beginners and all skill levels

Tugboat is a popular diving site in Curaçao thanks to the shipwreck found in this area. This dive site is off the coast of Tugboat Beach on the southwest coast of Curaçao.

The Tugboat site is appealing because it will allow even novice divers to get up close to the wreck. This is one of the more shallow wreck dive sites which makes it ideal for both snorkeling and beginner scuba diving. The wreck at this location was intentionally sunk and sits about 15 ft (5m) beneath the surface of the water. Tugboat is located near a pier, and some of the regular sightings here include tarpon, scorpionfish, yellowtail snapper, octopus, seahorses, parrotfish, shrimp, lobster, and sometimes nudibranch. The shipwreck at this location is a sight to see as it’s covered with tube sponges and a variety of soft coral.

The best time to scuba dive in Curaçao

Curaçao is a great place to dive year-round but there are certain times of the year when you might have an even better experience. The dry season for the island (from April to November annually) is generally the best time to visit Curaçao.

During this time the weather tends to be more consistently clear and calm with fewer chances of rain showers that might interrupt your diving plans. Water temperatures during the dry season are usually warmer (around 85°), while the rest of the year sees water temperatures around 79°. Ultimately, Curaçao is warm and sunny most of the time and you’re likely to have a good dive trip regardless of when you go.

The Beach Boys made searching for Kokomo a real thing with their 1988 hit song, ‘Kokomo’. The truth of that matter is, the feel good jam sounds good on any Caribbean beach, but it’ll sound even more amazing as you lay back and relax at Curaçao’s very own Kokomo Beach.

This beach is about 15 minutes from Willemstad in Vearsenbaai (Vearsen Bay), and it really lights up on weekends. There’s also a dive center and lots of cosy spots to lounge around. 12. Playa Kalki

Playa Kalki is home to the popular Alice in Wonderland coral reef. This is one of the more popular beaches for diving in Curaçao, and it is more or less a small cove surrounded by limestone cliffs. Access to the beach is possible by climbing down some stone steps carved into the cliffside.

The reef at this location is the biggest attraction, and you’ll be able to appreciate this and other underwater sightings as there’s usually good visibility here. There’s also a dive shop. Plus, if you get hungry there’s a snack bar and plenty of restaurants and bars not too far off. You’ll be able to rent lounges and palapas as well if you just want to relax. There is no admission fee for this beach, and when you get there, you can easily park in the small public lot.

11. Mambo Beach

Mambo Beach (also called Seaquarium beach) is a family-friendly beach loved by parents because of the shallow waters. It is right next to a local seaquarium, hence the name. This beach is the sort you’d see on a glossy travel magazine spread, down to the thatched tiki umbrellas sprinkled across the shore. You’ll find all the beach facilities you need here and a few shops and bars. There’s even a mall nearby. Watersports facilities are available on this beach too. At night and on weekends, this beach spot turns into an entertainment hub with concerts and even movie events getting underway. There’s usually an admission fee to get onto this beach.

10. Playa Forti

Postcard worthy views are what you’ll find at Playa Forti, and this will include charming fishing boats and a panoramic perspective of the island’s western tip. The sand on this beach is brown with a course texture which makes it stand out from some of the other beaches on the island. There’s a parking area near the beach and in that same area you’ll find snack bars and a restaurant as well. There’s a steep ramp and steps that lead down to the water and an opportunity to do some cliff jumping for adrenaline junkies.

9. Blue Bay Beach

The glistening blue waters and soft white sands of Blue Bay Beach are compelling, and a must to experience when in Curaçao. This beach in Willemstad is one of the best beaches on the island and you’ll see why right away just as soon as you settle in on some beach chair rentals, or even down on your beach towel. You’ll have options of umbrellas or palapas for shade while out on the beach, and plenty of high-end restaurant and bar options to choose from as well. This beach is great for diving with the Coral Gardens dive site nearby. There’s also a dive shop right on the beach.

8. Playa Lagun

The colorful fishing boats off the coast of Playa Laguna will certainly catch your attention once you arrive to this beach that is loved by swimmers, divers and fishermen alike. Whether you decide to dive or not, you’re sure to appreciate the ambiance of Playa Lagun relaxing in or out of the crystal clear waters.

7. Playa Piskado

Playa Piskado (also known as Playa Grandi) in Sabana Westpunt is a beach where you’ll be able to get up close and personal with the turtles. It will definitely be an unforgettable experience while in Curaçao. If you want to see the turtles, go to the beach before noon when the fishermen throw their chum into the water which attracts them. There’s a pier on this beach as well which you can sometimes admire marine life from, or just take really cool vacation photos. There’s a beachfront snack bar that always has tasty treats too.

6. Playa Jeremi

Playa Jeremi in Willemstad is a secluded cove that you can access by walking down some steps cut into the rocks from the parking area. This beach is gorgeous and serene, but there aren’t any amenities here so you’ll need to bring everything you’ll need for your beach day. Snorkelling is decent here, and the clear water definitely adds to the experience. Stay for the sunset to add some magic to your day. There’s no entrance fee and not much shade, so keep that in mind.

5. Kleine Knip / Playa Kenepa Chiki

With a stunning coastal landscape, Kleine Knip is loved by both locals and visitors to Curaçao. Kleine Knip is between the villages of Westpunt and Lagun and about 50 minutes from Willemstad. This is a highly-rated beach and although it is small, it is very beautiful. There’s no cost attached to parking or admission, and you’ll be able to rent beach chairs and umbrellas when you get there. If you get too hot, you can cool off in the ocean or with a cold fruit smoothie sold on the beach.

4. Cas Abao Beach

Cas Abao is gorgeous and at the top of the list for beach goers, local and visitor alike. This is a large beach, and the striking blue color of the water will draw you in right away. Right after you pay the entrance fee required for access (if you’re arriving by car), that is. You’ll have to shell out some cash if you want beach beds as well, but they can be worth the added comfort. Sometimes this beach is crowded, but it usually isn’t hard to find a spot to set up to relax for a few hours if you arrive early enough. There’s a dive shop, watersports, and options for food and drinks at this beach.

3. Playa PortoMari

Number three on our list is Playa PortoMari in Bandabou, and this really is a beach that has it all. There’s a restaurant for dining, a bar, great diving and a dive shop, bathroom and shower facilities, and also beach chair rentals available. This beach is on a private estate known as Plantages, and the water is usually calm and clear here. There’s a double reef for anyone who wants to dive, and dives can be arranged through the dive operator on the beach. There’s also two nature trails you can access from the beach. There’s a beachside restaurant and bar as well, all of which is accessible for a small admission fee.

2. Grote Knip / Playa Kenepa Grandi

Playa Kenepa Grandi is also known as Grote Knip, and it is near West Punt in Curaçao. This is a white sand beach with amazing views, popular with both sun bathers, swimmers, and people who just want to dive. This beach is free to access, and there’s lounge chairs, kayaks, and snorkelling gear available for rent. There’s also washroom accessible for a small fee. There aren’t any concession stands on this beach so you may want to bring food and lots of drinks. If you don’t, you’ll have to hope you’re there on a day when local vendors are selling food.

1. The beach at Klein Curaçao “Little Curaçao”

The beach on Klein Curaçao island is probably the one you see in your beachside imaginings ahead of potentially booking a Caribbean vacation. This beach is untouched, gorgeous, great for snorkelling, and super private. So private that you’ll need to hop on a boat to get there! Klein Curaçao is also known as “Little Curaçao”, and it is a tiny, uninhabited island 15 miles off the southeast coast of Curaçao. It takes about two hours each way to get to Klein Curaçao from the mainland.

Playa Gipy

Near the village of Westpunt, you’ll find Playa Gipy which is a small, wild and rocky beach. This isn’t a very touristy beach, and for many visitors it can be difficult to find. In fact, sometimes the people who stumble upon this beach are those who go looking for the lighthouse in this area, so in that sense getting to Playa Gipy can be quite the welcome surprise. In calm weather, you can dive in this location. It is only recommended to do so with a guide.

Playa Santu Pretu

Santu Pretu translates to black sand, and that is just what you’ll find on this Curaçao strand. This beach is relatively secluded with the surrounding natural elements mostly untouched. The road leading to Santu Pretu is closed, but you’ll be able to get to the beach with a 10 minute walk or by boat. There are no beach facilities here, but the snorkelling is pretty awesome.

Curaçao has always been a hidden gem, but with resorts like Sandals Curaçao in the mix, this island stands out even more on the radar of couples looking for some island fun mixed with luxury in a destination where the sun is always shining.

The best time to visit Curaçao is generally between the months of December and mid-April, which is considered peak season. You’ll get the most out of your time on this island paradise at this time with most of the events happening, including Curaçao Carnival which culminates with a grand street parade in March.

Curaçao in a nutshell

Curaçao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is also included in the ABC island chain along with Aruba and Bonaire. Arriving in Curaçao, you’ll land at the Curaçao International Airport also known as Hato International Airport. The airport is about 6 miles northwest of the capital, Willemstad. Willemstad is bright and colorful with a Dutch colonial style. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The population of Curaçao stands at around 150,000 people, and the island measures 270 square miles. Part of the southern Lesser Antilles, Curaçao is 37 miles from the Venezuelan coast. The highest point of the island is Sint-Christoffelberg in the northwest at around 375 meters, but other than that, the island is mostly flat. Weather wise, there aren’t any set seasons in Curaçao. In fact, the most people who attempt to separate Curaçao’s climate into seasons have been able to come up with are summer, windy, and somewhat rainy. On average though, daytime temperatures in Curaçao ranges from 78° to 88° F annually.

When is the best time to visit Curaçao: Seasonality

Many travellers hoping to escape winter temperatures make their way to Curaçao where the island’s minimum day time temperature is 78 Fahrenheit. Though the best time to visit Curaçao is between December and April, this island is known for having great weather year round, so technically, there really isn’t a bad time to go.

Weather wise, February and March have been recorded as the months to visit this island. Of course, when planning a vacation, the actual time most people go depends on their schedules. If you can’t get to Curaçao during December or April, you can try during the shoulder or low season which both have their own set of benefits. Here’s what you need to know about the various travel seasons as they relate to Curaçao:

Peak Season (December to April)

Peak season or high season tends to be the busiest for Caribbean islands including Curaçao. During this time many people choose to travel to get a break from the cold of northern climates, or for family trips during school breaks. The weather in Curaçao is normally at its best during these months. This means resorts and restaurants can fill up quickly and so can the best beachside spots. Traveling during peak season has its benefits including amazing weather and an exciting event calendar that you can take advantage of if you book early enough.

Shoulder Season (May to August)

The months of May to August are considered the shoulder season and can be a good time to travel if you’re looking for an experience that’s somewhere in the middle of what you’d get in the low and high seasons. This means there probably won’t be throngs of people on the beaches and other attractions, but the streets won’t be completely tourist free either. The weather is still great in the shoulder season and the tourist volume is not as large as in the peak season, which can work out well if you want to relax and also socialize and check out some cool events.

Low Season (September to November)

Making a booking will likely be a breeze in the low season which is usually between September and November. This is generally a quieter time to travel and in some places this can have to do with less than ideal weather. In Curaçao though, the weather is almost always sunny. In fact, September is typically the warmest month in Curaçao. Traveling during the low season can sometimes lead to scoring deals on airfare or accommodation which can be a plus.

Pro tip: It can be hard to predict when you’ll have the occasional rainy day during your vacation, and a good way to ensure you’ll have a good streak of sunny days to do all the things you’ve got planned is by booking a vacation that’s at least a week or two long.

The weather in Curaçao

Curaçao is influenced directly by the north-east trade winds and is in comparison to some other islands considered a dry island with a relatively low level of rainfall recorded annually. There are a few months that tend to be rainier, but even in these months rainfall tends to be somewhat irregular. On average, day temperatures in Curaçao range from 78 to 88° F. This is good news for vacationers who want to enjoy sunny temperatures in a place where it’s still more than possible to cool off with the steady trade winds, or by dipping into the ocean on one of many magnificent beaches.

Even in a mostly sunny destination, it’s worthwhile to pay attention to weather patterns to make the most of your vacation. While Curaçao has a mostly dry climate, in mid-October and mid-December there’s usually a mild increase in precipitation with 3.30 inches being recorded in October, 3.80 inches in November, and 3.90 inches in December. This means around this time you can expect a rain shower or two, but these usually are not prolonged.

Humidity wise, there’s high humidity throughout the year in Willemstad with the most humid month being November with 77.1%, and the least humid being August with 71.6%.

Curaçao’s windiest month is June, with March and February following close behind. June records wind speeds of around 11.9 knots (13.7 MPH or 22 KPH), which is the equivalent of a moderate breeze. June also records the island’s maximum sustained winds, particularly early in that month up until mid-June with top sustained speeds of 16.4 knots. Still, this remains in the moderate category, which means you won’t have to worry about Curaçao being too windy. Temperatures on the island will be breezy and warm, and conductive for a relaxing island getaway.

There’s always plenty of sunshine in Curaçao on the regular, but August is the sunniest month on record with just about 9.3 hours of sunshine per day on average. In a calendar year, there’s typically an average of 8.3 hours of sunshine per day in Curaçao. In compassion, London has 4.1 hours of sunshine as a daily average while New York City has 7 and Los Angeles has 8.9 hours.

Best time to dive in Curaçao

Not only is this island a great place for a beach vacation, it’s also an incredible dive destination. Stunning shores on this island include Playa Kenepa, Playa Kalki, Playa Cas Abou, Playa Lagun and Playa Jeremi, a little cove with beautiful views. Of these beaches, Playa Porto Mari, Playa Kalki and Playa Lagun are all great for diving. Water temperatures in Curaçao are usually between 78.8° - 82.4° F year round.

The months that are best for diving in Curaçao are Mid-December to Mid-April. These months also coincide with the peak season. Overall, most of the year tends to be dry in Curaçao which adds to the great visibility when diving on this island. Dive experts recommend the months of September and October if you want to see coral spawning first hand.

Major events in Curaçao

Carnival

January - March

The entire island of Curaçao gets into celebration mode around carnival time, and festivities include a host of events you can be part of if you visit the island during this time. The carnival season usually opens in January and there’s a number of events including music festivals, beauty pageants and parties that lead up to the grand street parade in March.

Plein Air Curaçao

March

Another big festival in Curaçao is Plein Air Curaçao hosted by the Art Foundation Curaçao. This is an artsy event that features local and international talent painting on land, underwater, and from high-altitude locations islandwide. Oils, watercolors, and pastels are among the mediums used, and workshops are available as well for both teens and adults. Paintings are exhibited and sold during this event as well, and on the last day of the festival, artists compete for prizes.

Curaçao Culinair

April

Calling all foodies! If you’re looking for a vacation that’s a mix of lots of food and plenty of fun, April is a great time to travel to Curaçao. The Curaçao Culinair event happens around this time where you’ll get a chance to taste the offerings of some of Curaçao’s finest restaurants and bars all in one place. This event is great for socializing and enjoying amazing food!

Koningsdag

April 27th

Also in April, you can celebrate Koningsdag, a festivity fit for a King. This name of this celebration translates to King’s Day, and it is all about celebrating the birthday of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. There’s a big party the night before Koningsdag in Pietermaai, and on Koningsdag, celebrations kick off in Punda where there’s a range of activities including live performances, a craft market and more. At night, the fun continues with more parties around the island.

Kaya Kaya Street Party

Bi-annually in August

The Kaya Kaya Street Party is always good fun; this is essentially the largest block party in Curaçao. This event unfolds across several streets in Otrobanda usually in August and it is a cool opportunity to get familiar with local music and appreciate art and murals made by some of the island’s talent. So laid back is this event that some locals even open up their homes to sell delicious food and drinks that can be enjoyed by all.

Vegan Food Fest

Every three months

The health or environmentally conscious will be in heaven at this food fest that serves up a variety of vegan foods. Items on offer typically include vegan nachos, sushi, cakes, organic wine, beer, and more. There’s also usually lots of natural handcrafted products on sale, and whether or not you’re vegan, this is still an event worth checking out.

Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival

August - September

Curaçao’s North Sea Jazz Music Festival is something of a household name there. Some of the artists who have performed at this festival in the past include Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Earth, Wind & Fire, Diana Ross, Bruno Mars, Sting, Juan Luis Guerra, Enrique Iglesias, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Aguilera, Prince, Tom Jones, and more. If you’re on island while this event is going on, definitely consider getting some tickets.

Curaçao Pride

October

Curaçao has its own local Pride festival aimed at celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. This event is held annually and is usually about 5 days long. Around this time, lots of parties are held as well as the Pride Walk along the streets of Willemstad.

KLM Curaçao Marathon

November

Those looking for a more active vacation might find November a good time to visit Curaçao as they can arrive in perfect timing for the KLM Curaçao Marathon. This marathon has been held annually since 2014 and its appeal has a lot to do with how scenic the course is along the waterfront of Curaçao, across the Queen Emma pontoon bridge, and over the Juliana Bridge which is 185 feet above sea level. Passionistas Pop-Up Fair

Every three months

Creativity comes alive at the Passionistas Pop-Up Fair which is held every three months in Curaçao. This pop-up event is usually held in Punda and includes food, music, and good vibes.

Pietermaai Pagara XXL

New Year’s Eve

Planning on opening your New Year in Curaçao? If you are, then while there you might want to consider letting Pietermaai be the backdrop for your celebrations. This is a colorful and lively part of Curaçao with lots of nightlife, dining, and entertainment options. All of these establishments add something special to the Pagara event and with the added live music, street shows and fireworks, Pietermaai certainly is the place to be on New Year’s Eve.

Fuikdag

First Sunday of the year

If you’re in Curaçao in January, chances are you’ll be able to enjoy Fuikdag, a float fest held on the first Sunday of the year. This is an exciting event that will require you to make arrangements to get to Fuik Bay by boat. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to get into the fun with scores of other people out on the water on boats, jet skis, and even air mattresses and inflatable animals.

Pro tip: If you’re looking for an excursion that’s off the beaten track, a trip to Little Curaçao by boat can also be an exciting adventure while in Curaçao. Since you’re in the area as well, you also have the option of quickly skipping over to Aruba and Bonaire to check all three ABC’s off your list. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Bonaire by plane from Curaçao, and 40 minutes from Bonaire to Aruba.

One of the oldest plantation houses in Curaçao is Landhuis Jan Kok. Landhuis Jan Kok was constructed in 1840 as an upgrade to another plantation house that had been built at the start of the 18th century. At this old plantation, several significant features still remain including an old slave bell. This land house is named after the 18th century slave master Jan Kok who was known for his cruelty. There’s a neat view from the terrace out onto the salt flats of St. Marie Bay where you can sometimes spot flamingoes.

One of the most popular museums on the island is Curaçao Museum in west Otrobanda. The building which houses this museum has a colonial style, and inside you can find out more about the geological history of Curaçao, or view pre-Colombian Indian artifacts, antique furniture (18th and 19th century), paintings by local and international artists, various maps and charts of America and the Caribbean region, and more.

43. Enjoy the Playa Porto Mari experience

Playa Porto Mari is one of those beaches in Curaçao that does not disappoint. It takes about 30 minutes to get here from Willemstad by car. Playa Porto Mari is on the private estate of Plantages "Porto Mari” on the west coast. The sand here is dazzlingly white, and the water calm and inviting. Sambil Curaçao is a shopping mall with over 100 stores located within 10 minutes of the airport and cruise terminal in an area known as Veeris. There are also movie theatres, a gym, a bank, and lots of dining options here.

41. Have a delicious Creole meal at Landhuis Dokterstuin

Restored in 1996, this land house is near Landhuis Ascension on the way to Westpunt. This property was already in operation in the 17th century with a land house having been built around the late 18th century. The property was owned by the government in the 19th century, at which point small plots of land were leased to former slaves in the hopes of developing local agriculture. Today, you can visit Landhuis Dokterstuin to sit down for a tasty meal at the Creole restaurant that now calls it home.

The Curacao Liqueur Distillery dates back to 1896 and is open for tours that can take you on a journey through some of the island’s history. It is just a few minutes from Willemstad, and during a tour here you’ll learn about the production process and even get to taste some of the different flavors produced at the distillery. The most famous liqueur produced here is liqueur blue, but there are other varieties including clear, green, red, orange, rum & raisin, chocolate and koffie.

39. Tour the forts in Willemstad

There are a few forts you can visit while in Willemstad and these include Fort Amsterdam, Rif Fort and Fort Nassau. Of that list, the one with highest prominence is Fort Amsterdam; it is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This fort houses the Governor’s office as well as the Council of Ministers and government offices in Curaçao. Riff Fort in Otrobanda was constructed in 1828 and is now a shopping center. Fort Nassau was built in 1797 and served for years as a signal post and control tower. It is located just outside of Willemstad and is a great place to go for panoramic views of the city.

Punda in Willemstad is a great place to shop. The streets on this side of town are colorful and the people are as friendly as ever, just as Curaçao is known for. Curaçao has always been a major seafaring and commercial center and the maritime museum pays tribute to that. This museum is housed in a restored 1729 mansion near the floating market. There are some interesting antique miniatures inside as well as 17th century ship models, maps, and other historical seafaring artifacts with some items dating as far back as the 1500s.

33. Get back to center at Shelterrock Paradise

A family business by design, Shelterrock Paradise has been in existence since 2016. It is located at the top of a mountain and as the name suggests, it is something of a resting place where people can go to recover after a period of unrest. Part of the experience here are the local meals and themed nights, including coconut evening where your meal is cooked in fresh coconuts for hours on hot coals. If you go here to unwind or have a meal, you can choose from options including chicken, stewed meat, goat, shrimp, fish, vegetarian or seafood mix.

32. Learn about the healing properties of aloes at Curaloe

Curaloe is an aloe vera plantation in Curaçao. No reservations are necessary to visit this location and neither is an admission fee. Once you get to the plantation you’ll be able to roam around the premises freely, test products, and even relax and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. You can watch a video of the production process while you’re there and also get information about the plantation and products from the attendants.

31. Explore the Hato Caves

The Hato Caves make for a great exploring point to start off with while in Curaçao. It is located near the airport, and the caves here are said to have formed millions of years ago beneath the ocean. Inside these caves there’s lots to see including striking limestone formations, waterfalls, natural pools, famous statues and more. The cave is also home to a colony of bats, so photos are not allowed. The Hato Caves tour is about 45 minutes in duration.

30. Lounge at Mambo Beach

Mambo Beach is a family-friendly beach in Curaçao with lots of shops that offer everything from food and clothing to souvenirs and gifts. The beach is within an area known as Mambo Boulevard that is something of a shopping complex complete with restaurants, stores and other services, which means you can find a little bit of everything as part of your Mambo Beach day. Daaibooi Beach is close to town and is known and loved for its easy snorkelling opportunities. There’s pergolas for shade and also a snack bar that’s open on both weekdays and weekends. If you’re feeling really adventurous, there’s a trail to the west end of the beach that leads to the countryside. Only attempt to explore this trail if you have a trusted guide.

27. Dine at Landhuis Daniel

Established sometime around 1650, Plantation Daniel is said to have been built by a castaway who washed ashore in Curaçao on St. Daniel’s Day. There is a contrasting historical account which says this plantation was actually named after Daniel Ellis, an Englishman who worked with the Dutch West Indian company that constructed the plantation house. In either case, this is still one of the oldest plantation houses in Curaçao. It has since been transformed into a plantation restaurant.

The Curaçao Sea Aquarium focuses on rehabilitation and creating safe, natural habitats for marine creatures. As their efforts are ongoing, spectators can come in to see and interact with the animals with shows and other activities. One such show that gets underway here involves the adorable sea lions, and you don’t want to miss out on it while there. There’s also shows with dolphins that get underway as well, which can be fun to witness.

25. Dive in Wonderland at Playa Kalki

Playa Kalki is popular for both snorkelling and scuba diving. This beach is sometimes referred to by divers as “Alice in Wonderland” for its mushroom-shaped coral formations. Closer to shore, there’s a roped off area with a floating platform. There’s also a parking area, a snack bar, and a dive shop.

24. Swim in the crystal clear waters of Playa Jeremi

Playa Jeremi is a beautiful little cove with stunning views. It is tranquil and perfect for relaxing from early in the day until the sun goes down. You’ll need to walk down some steps cut into the rocks to get down to the beach, but once you get there you’ll be in total admiration of how crystal clear the water is, and how blissful it is to be there especially as the sun goes down.

23. Find Kokomo Beach

Was this the beach that the Beach Boys were talking about in their catchy hit that speaks about falling in love, melting tropical drinks in hand, at Kokomo? A glimpse at the beautiful Kokomo beach in Curaçao says it could very well be with its peaceful ambiance and stunning waterside views. Whether it is, or it isn’t, Kokomo Beach is a special place, and perfect for a couples date. There’s no entrance fee required, and you’ll have access to beach chairs for lounging and a dive center. There’s also a restaurant and bar on this beach.

22. See Queen Wilhelmina Bridge

Queen Wilhelmina Bridge is a high rise auto bridge that you can cross to get between the two separated parts of Willemstad. Sometimes this bridge moves about to make way for passing boats, but when it’s stationary, it can make for a romantic stroll with cool views.

21. Visit Curaçao’s Ostrich Farm

While in Curaçao, a visit to the Ostrich Farm is a must. The farm is 15 minutes to the south of Willemstad where you can sign up for an Ostrich Safari Tour. As part of this tour, you’ll ride around the farm in a safari vehicle and learn about the African Ostrich and the Etmu. This farm makes it possible to see all stages of ostrich life, from egg, all the way up to an adult. The baby ostriches here are the absolute cutest! There’s also a few emu on the farm as well.

20. See the transformation of Landhuis Bloemhof

Landhuis Bloemhof is a small plantation that today is used for exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and other events. The main plantation house has over the years become something of a hub for artisans. Antique furniture adds to the ambiance of this location and there’s lots of remodelled areas including the stables and barns that have been converted into an archive, library, and reading room. This space is largely dedicated to the arts.

19. Snorkel and lounge at the beach bar at Blue Bay Beach

Blue Bay Beach is perfect for a day of snorkeling which starts or ends at a simple but trendy beach bar. This beach is on the private side, and there’s a small entrance fee of about $6 to get in. Once inside you can use the facilities which include showers and restrooms. There’s restaurants near the beach as well. Overall, your experience at Blue Bay is bound to be breezy and fun, and even more memorable if you stay until sunset!

If you’re looking for a great beach to dive on while in Curaçao, Playa Lagun is worth considering. There’s usually lots of sightings here including a wide variety of reef fish, turtles, corals, large sponges, and other marine life, particularly near the rocky cliffs. 17. Visit the Kura Hulanda Museum

The Kura Hulanda Museum is located in central Willemstad, right at the harbor. The area where this museum is located played a significant role in the trading and transshipment of enslaved Africans by Dutch entrepreneurs, and thus the museum tells much of this story through its exhibits. Kura Hulanda also showcases African cultural heritage as filtered down to Curaçaoan and Caribbean societies over the years.

16. Hike Christoffel National Park

A great place to hike while in Curaçao is at Christoffel, the largest national park on the island. Part of the attraction here is the climb up Christoffel mountain, which rises some 350 meters/1150 ft. This park opens around 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, and 6 a.m. on weekends. It is advisable to schedule your hike before11 a.m., when it’s cooler. There are 8 hiking trails at Christoffel and most are relatively easy to navigate. If hiking isn’t your speed, then you can get a tour arranged to explore the scenery at Christoffel by jeep, mountain bike, or on horseback.

15. Try Caribbean Breeze’s Italian ice

Italian ice will be a sure treat while on this sunny isle, and Caribbean Breeze’s version produced and sold in Curaçao is one of the best you’ll have on the island. 14. Watch the fishermen clean their catch at Playa Piscado

Playa Piscado is also known as Playa Grandi and it is a good option if you’re looking to swim with turtles while snorkeling, or just get a better look at the day to day of a local fisherman. Turtles are drawn to this area because of all the fishing activity and you’ll see many of them around the dock while the fishermen undertake their fish cleaning duties. 13. Snorkel at Playa Kenepa Chiki

Playa Kenepa is quite literally two beaches in one — Kenepa Grandi, which means bigger beach, and Kenepa Chiki, the smaller of the two. These two beaches are also known as Grote Knip and Klein Knip. Both of these beaches are super private, and relatively isolated. The latter is great for snorkelling.

12. See the home of Blue Curaçao (Landhuis Chobolobo)

Landhuis Chobolobo is located in Punda and many describe its history as “sketchy.” It was built in the early 1800s and is thought to have been a country residence for wealthy merchants at one time. Today, Chobolobo houses the distillery Senior Co., producers of the famous Blue Curaçao. A guided tour of the facility will provide an opportunity to learn more about the history of this old plantation house.

11. Mellow out at Shete Boka National Park

A visit to Shete Boka National Park will be a mellow way to spend your day while in Curaçao. Shete Boka is on the western portion of the island, and this national park has lots of beautiful coves. The words ‘Shete Boka’ means seven inlets, but there are many more at this location including Boka Tabla with amazing views from the top, and Pistolero, named for the sound the waves make when breaking on the boka.

7. Cross Queen Emma Bridge

Queen Emma Bridge connects Punda and Otrobanda in the capital city of Willemstad. This is a pontoon bridge, and it opens at various intervals to accommodate passing ships. The bridge has existed since 1888, with renovations being done in 1939. So familiar are locals to this long existing bridge that it even has a nickname: “Our Swinging Old Lady”.

Swimming with dolphins is the highlight of any Caribbean vacation and the opportunity presents itself in Curaçao. The Dolphin Academy works with dolphins in the open sea, and as part of their open swim you’ll get to swim side by side with dolphins that choose for themselves when they want to swim with you! The entire Dolphin Academy experience lasts about one and a half hours, with 30 minutes spent in the water. Bring along your towel, swimsuit, and sunblock and you’ll be good to go.

5. Lounge, snorkel and cliff jump at Playa Kenepa Grandi

Cliff jumping can be a thrill in the Caribbean. That is, if you’re brave enough. If you are and find yourself wanting to tick this off your bucket list, then Playa Kenepa is the place to go. Not only is this one of the best beaches in Curaçao, it is also one of the safer cliff jumping areas. Regularly, there are kids and adults jumping off the cliffs here which are around 20 ft. high. Watch where you’re jumping as there’s rocks on the bottom. Once you jump into the water you can swim back to the beach and take the stairs to get back up. This is a better option than trying to climb back up the cliffside where there’s often sea urchins.

4. Learn about Landhuis Klein Santa Martha

Another old plantation house worth visiting while in Curaçao is Landhuis Klein Santa Martha. This plantation house was built around the 1700s, and can be found atop a hill on the northeast of Santa Martha Bay. Landhuis Klein Santa Martha was one of the top 3 salt producers on the island and now houses a restaurant and hotel.

3. Take a boat to Klein (Little) Curaçao

Two hours off the coast of Curaçao (about 8 miles off the southeast coast) there’s a small island which is known for having the longest and whitest beach in Curaçao. This island is known as Klein Curaçao and it is uninhabited. It is possible to get here by scheduling a tour with a dive operator, chartering a boat, or otherwise arranging a tour through your resort. Tours often include snorkelling, refreshments, and a picnic or barbecue lunch. Though this is quite the spectacular beach stop, there isn’t much shade so you’ll definitely need to bring hats and other beach gear.

A diverse culture and heritage

Diverse in more ways than one, the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was occupied by the Arawaks more than 6,000 years ago. It was first ruled by Spanish in the 16th century when Spanish Commander, Alonso de Ojeda, discovered the island. Passport cards are less expensive than conventional passports (a passport card for one adult costs $55 as opposed to a passport that costs about $110), and they are also less bulky so they can fit in your wallet. The downside to passport cards is that there isn’t any room for stamps or visas.

Trusted Traveler program cards

Trusted Traveler programs are an initiative of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). An EDL is a low-cost alternative to a passport. With an EDL, you’ll be able to re-enter the US from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean islands. EDLs are currently only being issued by the states of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington State, and they can only be used at land and sea borders. I’m stuck in Curaçao without a passport. What do I do?

A lot can happen while on vacation, including your passport getting lost or stolen. Regardless of how it happens, this scenario can be a complete nightmare. If it ever happens to you, don’t panic. The first thing you’ll need to do is alert your hotel or resort of the situation. If you’re staying at a Sandals resort, staff at the front desk will be happy to help. Here are the steps to follow if you misplace your passport while in Curacao:

1. Once you’ve brought the situation to the attention of staff at your resort, the next step will be to make an official police report. Get a copy of your report as you will need it to obtain an emergency passport.
   

2. Get in contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate-general. You’ll need to repeat some of the same information documented in the police report or provide a copy of the report to the embassy or consulate. You will also need to provide confirmation of an airline ticket, which serves as proof of your urgent need to travel.
