The region of Knoxville was originally a hunting ground for the native Cherokee Indians. In 1786, James White established his home in the region and consequently secured the area by building a fort and several cabins around the region. This area was named Knoxville in 1791 and started functioning as the capital of the Southwest Territory.
After nearly a decade, Knoxville began to develop as a leading distribution center in the region because of its geographical location and its easy access to the many waterways in the area.
Although there was a brief pause during the Civil War, Knoxville continued to develop rapidly. The presence of abundant natural resources helped it establish itself as a major hub for lumber, coal and marble. Today, Knoxville has made its presence felt in many other fields including the arts.
George Roby Dempster, the mayor of Knoxville from 1952 to 1955, invented the Dempster-Dumpster, the common trash container that can be mechanically emptied into garbage trucks.
Knoxville was nicknamed "The Marble City" in the early 1900s because of the abundance of marble in the region.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory that played a pivotal role in the development of the atomic bomb is located 20 mi/32 km south of Knoxville.
The popular soft drink Mountain Dew had its origins in Knoxville.
Country singer Kenny Chesney grew up in Knoxville.
Knoxville hosted the 1982 World's Fair, the smallest city ever to host an International Exposition.
