A closer look at one of Alaska’s iconic mascots. Otters were my father’s favorite animal. I often wondered how many times he would have seen an otter as he grew up in Indianapolis, nevertheless, he loved them. Having moved to the Pacific Northwest where I was raised, he would take me to Point Defiance Zoo and we would watch them spin around and play in their enclosure. He said they were the ‘clowns of the sea’. On a rare occasion, we would see them in the wild as we’d walk along the beaches of Puget Sound. They would dive down and emerge with small crabs. While swimming on their backs they would use their stomachs as tables as they broke open the crabs using small stones. Then they would spin around and start all over again.

Morning - Prepare for a two-tank dive, exploring a vibrant thila (submerged reef) and an overhang full of soft corals. Nondivers can snorkel or relax on board.

Afternoon - Set anchor at a virgin island. Divers can explore the open waters on a channel dive; nondivers can water-ski or tube in the lagoon. Later, enjoy a relaxing massage on the beach.
