Overview
Introduction
Huaraz, about 180 mi/290 km north of Lima, is Peru's most important center for treks and mountain climbing in the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash. Huaraz has a glorious setting beneath the glaciated peaks of the Cordillera Blanca—from your hotel window you can see Huascaran (Peru's highest peak at 22,199 ft/6,768 m) and several others that reach more than 20,000 ft/6,100 m (Huascaran and the Cordillera Blanca are within Huascaran National Park).
Several tour operators offer visits to the nearby Llanganuco Lakes, as well as technical climbs to the top of Alpamayo (once labeled "the world's most perfect mountain"), trekking and trips to see Puya raimondii (a plant that grows up to 33 ft/10 m in height and that is found only in certain regions of the Andes). Several nearby towns have thermal baths where you can relax your muscles after hiking and climbing through the area.
Overview
Introduction
The port of Muara is Brunei's only deepwater port and is a great way to enter this tiny country. Developments started there with coal mining at the Brooketon Colliery, which closed in 1924.
Muara's main attraction is its beautiful mile-/kilometer-long white-sand beach, perfect for relaxing during the day or browsing the local people's handicraft stalls. The beach is home to the Brunei-Australia Memorial site where ANZAC is observed on 25 April. Australian troops landed there on 10 June 1945 to end the Japanese occupation of Brunei.
The Marine Biodiversity Centre on Jalan Pantai Meragang Muara has aquariums, displays and exhibits, and is a good location to see turtles. The Royal Brunei Yacht Club is located in Muara.
Location
Cruise ships that berth at Muara offer passengers tours venturing into the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan, which is 30 minutes away, to see the city's mosque, museums and the Sultan's Palace. Another popular attraction is a tour of Kampong Ayer, the water village, made up of houses on stilts connected by wooden planks.
Independent travelers can reach Bandar Seri Begawan by buses departing from Muara's Serasa Ferry Terminal. Ferries depart to the Malaysian ports of Labuan and Kota Kinabalu.
Overview
Introduction
This ancient city, now in ruins, is located on a rocky, sparsely populated plain 20 mi/30 km north of Abeche. Ouara was abandoned when the water table dried up 300 years ago, and all that remains are traces of palace walls, queen's quarters, tribunal hall, prisons, tomb, mosque and guard house. The buildings were made with palm trunks, transported from the south by slaves, and bricks strengthened with a mixture of blood and fat from oxen and camels. The eastern part of the city is walled by a small mountain believed to be the home of evil spirits. Hire a guide if you plan to visit the site—the road is difficult to find among the brush and rocks. Regular taxis in Abeche can't make it here. Instead, ask a business owner in Abeche to help you find a motorcycle taxi driver who knows the way (expect tp pay around US$20 return). 400 mi/645 km northeast of N'Djamena.
