How to Become a
Travel Agent in
Sahara Desert
Occupying most of Algeria, this fascinating and exciting region should be visited by everyone at some point in a lifetime. There are three primary routes that can be considered: RN1, which runs from Algiers to Tamanrasset and is by far the most popular (from north to south, it passes through Ghardaia, El Golea and In Salah); RN6, which runs from northeastern Morocco and western Algeria through the western Erg Desert to Mali; and RN3, which goes from Tunisia/Constantine to Djanet and other points southeast. Many parts of the roads are paved or hard surfaced, but other parts are mere sand tracks, so check in Algiers to make sure your vehicle is adequate for the journey prior to setting out. Having said that, we still think it's best to join an organized and guided tour through Algeria's parts of the Sahara.
With distances so long and public transportation a bit slow, it's a good idea to book a tour with a travel agency or hire a local guide if driving your own four-wheel-drive vehicle. Ghadames is the nearest desert spot to Tripoli. But the most impressive landscapes are farther south in the Fezzan province. The long drive to Ghat is spectacular. From there, you can spend several days exploring the Tadrart Akakus National Park, which offers a lot of rock art in addition to the mountainous desert landscapes. Multiday camel trips are offered—it's best to book them in advance. Germa, to the east, makes for an interesting stop and a good base for exploring the nearby Ubari sand dunes and the Messak Settafet, a mountainous area that also has an abundance of prehistoric rock art.
