St. Martin / St. Maarten

Although the island only comprises about 37 square miles, it is partitioned into two different nationalities — Dutch and French — making it the smallest landmass in the world to be shared by two separate governments. The two nations have been living peacefully (for the most part) for the past 350 years, cooperating and sharing the island's generous natural resources, beauty and tourist traffic, yet still allowing their respective national cultures to shine through. Legally, Sint Maarten is part of the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and St. Martin is a commune of Guadeloupe (an overseas department of France). Each side has different laws and rules, although the physical border between the two is almost imperceptible. For many vacationers (and locals, for that matter), the island is unparalleled as it affords the opportunity to visit two destinations in one, as both sides offer different culture, language, cuisine and ambiance. A real two-for-one deal in the Caribbean — what could be better?

St. Martin / St. Maarten

The island is located about 150 miles southeast of Puerto Rico and sits about midway in the chain of islands in the Caribbean. There are four well-known border boundaries on St. Martin/Sint Maarten: French Quarter/Dutch Quarter, Belle Vue/Cole Bay, Oyster Pond and Low Lands/Cupecoy, although visitors and locals cross freely back and forth between the two sides without any hassle. The two capitals of the island are Philipsburg (on the Dutch side) and Marigot (on the French side). Marigot is home to about 5,800 residents and was originally a fishing village, but now offers great shopping and dining. Philipsburg houses about 1,200 residents, is known for its lively scene, and is a main port for cruise ships.

The two sides of the island have some similarities, yet each offers a unique experience for travelers. St. Martin is the place to go for quiet relaxation and seclusion. It offers quaint towns with typical French colonial architecture and nice street-side cafes. Some of the best restaurants can be found on this side of the island, specializing in sophisticated French and Creole cuisine. Head to Sint Maarten for the nightlife and for a more lively scene. Their renowned celebration of Carnival includes parades, music, dancing, and great parties that last all night. Activities abound here, from casinos to malls to dance clubs — something for everyone to guarantee an action-packed, upbeat vacation. Both sides offer unbeatable white-sand beaches, plenty of palm trees and the chance to experience some of the best island time that the Caribbean has to offer.

Overview

Introduction

St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the island, is still somewhat more developed for tourism than the French side, with large hotels, villas, condos, resorts, time-share developments, casinos and an amazing variety of nightlife. Its capital, Philipsburg, is a favorite destination of cruise ships and plays host to thousands of tourists when ships are in port.

The French and Dutch sides of the island, although culturally distinct, have a shared history dating back to the early 17th century. Early settlers banded together to ward off the Spanish, then divided the 37-sq-mi/96-sq-km island between themselves. The hilly, southern Dutch side is the smaller half, covering 16 sq mi/41 sq km. The French side is often called "the north" by locals.

The Arawak Indians named the island Soualiga, or Land of Salt, and the Great Salt Pond, near Philipsburg, remains a prominent geological feature protected by local environmentalists. The capital's sheltering Great Bay has attracted international traders for centuries, and St. Maarten is still known as a duty-free shopper's paradise. With its sheltered harbors, trade winds and proximity to other islands, St. Maarten is also a yachting hub.

The Dutch side changed its status in October 2010 from an island territory of the Netherlands Antilles to an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands remains head of state, while The Hague continues to be in charge of overseeing foreign affairs and defense. The people of St. Maarten remain Dutch nationals and carry Dutch passports.

St. Maarten sustained widespread damage during Hurricane Irma in September 2017, though many historic buildings weathered the storms beautifully. Nature quickly reasserted itself, returning tropical foliage and stunning beaches to their original beauty.

Infrastructure is a little slower to replace, but it's well on its way, with most tourist attractions, shops, restaurants and casinos open for business. Major hotels and resorts are taking longer to restore, as several required extensive reconstructions.

Must See or Do

Sights—Sunrise at Dawn Beach; sunset and maybe even the "green flash" at Cupecoy or Mullet Bay beach; Wathey Square; the views from Fort Willem and Fort Amsterdam; the thrill of big planes landing right over your head at Sunset Bar & Grill on Maho Beach.

Museums—Island history at the St. Maarten Museum.

Memorable Meals—A romantic dinner overlooking the harbor at Ocean Lounge on Front Street; grilled lobster at one of the popular waterside restaurants on the Simpson Bay strip.

Late Night—Playing roulette at Casino Royale or Princess Casino; bar hopping along the Simpson Bay strip, including Red Piano Bar.

Walks—A hike with Seagrape Tours; a leisurely stroll along Front Street or Maho Plaza for shopping and a cappuccino overlooking the sea.

Especially for Kids—Watersports off Great Bay Beach; Carousel Gelateria for super sundaes and a ride on a beautiful custom-made Venetian merry-go-round.

Potpourri

With 37 beaches on a 37-sq-mi/96-sq-km island, St. Maarten boasts one beach for every 1 sq mi/2.6 sq km.

The panoramic view from The Lookout on Cole Bay Hill is St. Maarten's most photographed spot.

Sand dredged from the harbor for construction of the cruise ship piers was used to replenish Great Bay Beach, now one of the island's widest and longest stretches of beach.

The island of St. Martin/St. Maarten is the world's smallest land mass shared by two sovereign nations.

Simpson Bay Lagoon is the largest lagoon in the Caribbean.

The Pasanggrahan Royal Guest House hotel was once the summer home of the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina.

The French side of the island is part of the European Union; the Dutch side is not.

No border formalities exist between the two sides of the island, just two quite easy-to-miss signs: Bienvenue dans la partie Francaise (Welcome to the French side) and Welcome to Sint Maarten.

The numbers 10-10-10 are considered lucky, as this is the date when the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved and St. Maarten achieved full country status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Location

Philipsburg has a large port facility—the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise Pier in the Pointe Blanche area of town—just a short walk or taxi ride from downtown. At the pier, there's also a Welcome Terminal with information booths, ATMs, and—built in old St. Maarten style—Harbour Point Village, housing 12 branches of the best Front Street jewelry shops and several market stalls. As many as six cruise ships may be in town in a day, either tying up at the facility or anchoring in Great Bay and tendering passengers to Bobby's Marina or the Captain Hodge Wharf.

There are also information booths stocked with brochures and maps near the pier at Wathey Square and along Front Street. Wi-Fi hot spots and Internet cafes are widespread.

Shore Excursions

Shore excursions—and their prices—vary from cruise line to cruise line. Check with your ship's activity director or your travel agent for additional information.

Excursions are likely to include sailing and other watersports; a trip to the tiny islets of Tintamarre, famous for its magic mud, or Pinel; biking; the Loterie Farm at Pic Paradis for its nature and soft-adventure activities; or island tours. Tour information is available at all the hotels and resorts, at the tourist offices and from cab drivers who are often also tour guides.

Overview

Introduction

If you had to pick a single island to represent the variety of travel experiences available in the entire Caribbean, St. Martin/St. Maarten would be a good choice. It has two nationalities, French and Dutch, which provide a good sampling of the different European cultures that have left their mark on the West Indies.

The island has coral reefs for diving and snorkeling, spreads of beautiful white sand for sunbathing and all the duty-free shopping you could dream of. It's partly exclusive and upscale, with pricey restaurants and boutiques, partly geared to the mass tourism of cruise ships and large resorts. You will also find an island that's well connected to the outside world, with fine hotels, glitzy casinos, Wi-Fi access island-wide and excellent restaurants.

Note: St. Martin/St. Maarten sustained widespread damage during Hurricane Irma in September 2017. Full recovery is still a work in progress, but most tourist infrastructure has returned to normal operation.

Geography

St. Martin/St. Maarten, which lies 144 mi/232 km east of Puerto Rico, is covered with conical hills. Coarse grass and scrub, palm trees and poinsettias dominate the landscape of the triangular-shaped island.

The island's coastline zigzags erratically, with rocky peninsulas separating quiet coves of white-sand beaches and soupy salt ponds, often fringed with mangroves. On the generally flatter west side, the beaches are washed by the calm Caribbean. On the east side, the hills descend to the livelier surf of the Atlantic Ocean.

History

The divided status of St. Martin/St. Maarten is a result of the colonial tug-of-war between European powers in the Caribbean. The island was inhabited well before Europeans arrived, however: An archaeological dig in St. Martin revealed tools and pottery dating back to 550 BC. Columbus supposedly set foot on the island in 1493, naming it in honor of Bishop St. Martin of Tours. However, by that time, the island had been taken over by the fierce and cannibalistic Caribs, which may be why the Spanish never developed it.

Dutch settlers arrived in the early 1600s, and every colonial power active in the Americas thereafter owned a piece of the island at one time or another. Legend has it that a Frenchman and a Dutchman finally settled an argument over territorial rights by pacing off their shares. Of the 37 sq mi/96 sq km, the French got the bigger slice, but the Dutch got the most valuable real estate—the Salt Pond and the harbor (the international airport is also on the Dutch side). The 1648 Treaty of Concordia marked the formal division.

The French part of the island is a COM (Collectivite Outre Mer), a largely self-governing part of France. St. Martin uses the euro as its currency, and St. Maarten uses its own currency, athough both commonly accept payment in U.S. dollars, too.

Snapshot

The island's attractions include Dutch and French culture, fabulous white-sand beaches, friendly people, fantastic duty-free shopping, snorkeling and scuba diving, volcanic mountains, deep-sea fishing, horseback riding, excellent food (especially in St. Martin) and casinos and nightlife (in St. Maarten).

Those interested in the classic Caribbean holiday—shopping, beaching, gambling, eating, partying—will enjoy St. Martin/St. Maarten. Those seeking a quiet island with little commercial development may be disappointed.

Potpourri

There's an upside to having to rebuild after a hurricane: Everything is shiny and new. St. Martin/St. Maarten has been hit hard by storms in recent years, so the island may seem more modern (and less quaint) than many other parts of the Caribbean.

If someone calls you doudou, don't be insulted. It means "sweetie" or "darling."

Sunbathers heading for the pretty beach at Maho Bay should know that they will be directly under the flight path of the island's main airport. If you're prepared, the giant jets provide an amazing spectacle as they scream over the beach close enough for you to get a clear look at the pilots. Unprepared beachgoers caught snoozing may need an additional week on a very quiet beach to recuperate.

St. Martin/St. Maarten is the smallest land area in the world where sovereignty is peacefully divided between two countries. It is also home to people of more than 120 nationalities.

The island is home to numerous salt ponds and was, in fact, originally named Land of Salt (Soualiga) by the original Arawak inhabitants. Salt later became important to the island's economy. In the days before refrigeration, it was used to preserve food, including the salt cod that was a staple of trade. When the sugar industry met its demise at the end of the 19th century, salt became a main export and remained so until 1960.

During the off-season (mid-April to mid-December), hotel room rates can fall by 30%-50%.

You'll notice that many of the older wooden houses on the island have gingerbread-style trim. These intricate decorations are known as fretwork in the Caribbean, and there are more than 100 different patterns on the island. If you're looking for ways to tell the French side from the Dutch side, look at the decorative touches on the older buildings. You will see more wrought iron on the French side.

Peter Stuyvesant, who later founded New Amsterdam (New York City), lost a leg fighting the Spanish over St. Maarten.

When shopping in the market in Marigot, keep in mind the first sale of the day is considered lucky for the vendors and the best time to bargain for a lower price.

The low strip of land on which Philipsburg is built purportedly did not exist when Christopher Columbus "discovered" St. Martin. It was later that a sandbank formed, creating the Great Salt Pond behind the town as well as a now-valuable piece of real estate.
