Although the Cornish town of Falmouth, England, is very pretty and one of the least touristy in the area, the only real attraction is Pendennis Castle, built by Henry VIII to guard the harbor. The harbor is Europe's deepest and still the focal point of the town. The art college and a long history of Cornish painting give the town a creative air.
Located 45 mi/70 km southwest of Plymouth, Falmouth as a single destination isn't really worth the trip, but it makes a nice stop on a tour of Cornwall.
Located 90 mi/144 km northwest of Kingston, midway between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios on the island's north coast, the former sugar port of Falmouth is a charming, unspoiled Jamaican coastal town. It is busiest during the Wednesday market.
Falmouth was the original port of Jamaica and served as the landing point for many slaves arriving in the New World. It was known as the wealthiest New World port south of Charleston, S.C., and was a leading port for the export of sugar and rum.
Shipping activity eventually moved to Port Royale in Kingston, and once shipping ceased, the harbor filled in with silt and later was abandoned altogether.
Today, the town of Falmouth has a new slogan and promotional theme: "Discover a Treasured Past." Many classic Georgian-era buildings, now in disrepair, still line the town's narrow side streets, but the remaining designated historical buildings are gradually being restored.
The 32-acre/13-hectare, two-berth cruise port in Falmouth on Jamaica's north coast enables a large amount of cruise ships to dock at one time.
The Falmouth port's US$222 million expansion project was done through a partnership between RCCL and the Port Authority of Jamaica. It transformed the historic town of Falmouth into the first thematic cruise port destination. Two long piers are surrounded by a landmass accommodating roadways, terminal buildings and a town center with shops, restaurants and boutique-hotels. Offerings include handcrafted jewelry, Blue Mountain coffee, and Jamaican food and drink.
The US$45 million commercial center, housed on an 11-acre/4-hectare wharf, features low-rise, warehouse-style, red-roofed buildings with shops below and residences above; horse-drawn buggies; cobblestoned pedestrian streets; market kiosks; a trolley station; costumed characters; and walking paths for self-guided tours.
Some 60 Jamaican tour operators are offering sightseeing tours, including river tubing, ATV tours, excursions to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, and walking tours of the 300-year-old Georgian-style town of Falmouth.
Jamaica also has cruise ports in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio.
It's best to sign up for the excursions offered by your ship. Although not the least expensive way to see the area, it will save you more time than making the arrangements yourself.
Typical excursions in the Falmouth area include riding down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft, horseback riding, river tubing or visiting nearby Dunn's River Falls. Falmouth shore excursions offer off-road fun with adventurous ATV tours.
