Who Antigua Isn’t For

If you like smooth roads between the airport and your resort, this may not be your place. If you want a glamorous drive‑up and “White Lotus” vibes as you enter the property, this may not be your island. If you need lots of activities, nightlife, and high‑energy entertainment, there are other Caribbean destinations that will suit you better. And if you love extravagant resort pools with swim‑up bars and multiple pool complexes, there’s really only one resort on Antigua that meets that expectation.

Who Antigua Is Perfect For

However… if you love spectacular beaches with crystal‑clear Caribbean blue water and wide, soft white sand, you’ll love Antigua.

• If you want a vacation that’s all about relaxing and decompressing, I saw several resorts that fit that bill beautifully.


• If you like walking out of your beachfront room to sweeping views of calm turquoise water, Antigua delivers.


• If you prioritize the beach, the room, and the service over glitz and glam, I’ve got hotels for you.


• If you like good food with Caribbean flair but don’t need Michelin‑level dining, Antigua has plenty to offer.


• And finally, if you don’t mind a layover on the East Coast, Antigua is a spectacular destination.

Sandals Grande Antigua

The Beach

The beach here is GORGEOUS. Located on Dickenson Bay about 25 minutes from ANU airport, the water is calm, crystal clear, and beautifully blue. The beach is long and wide with soft white sand, plenty of chairs, and all kinds of activities.

For me, the beach is absolutely the biggest draw at Sandals Grande Antigua.

The Resort

This is a large property with several pools and enough dining options that you’ll be hard‑pressed to try them all in a week‑long stay. Options mean choices — always a good thing.

They also have a large number of room categories to fit any budget and travel style.

My Favorite Rooms

• Caribbean Walkout Club Level Veranda Suite A spacious suite with a private patio and an easy walk to the beach or pool right from your room.


• Caribbean Beachfront Butler Rondoval Truly unique — a conical, stand‑alone room with butler service and mere steps from the beach.

Pineapple Beach Club Antigua

The Beach

Another fabulous adults‑only all‑inclusive resort on one of the best beaches in all of Antigua. Long Bay Beach is calm, crystal clear, and the perfect Caribbean turquoise blue.

Waterfront and Beachfront rooms share the same view — the difference is simply stepping right onto the powder‑white sand.

Dining

The buffet is an open‑air restaurant with serene ocean views. It’s the perfect place for breakfast or lunch.

Don’t Miss: The Outhouse

Nope — not what you’re thinking. It’s an open‑air rustic BBQ shack perched high above Long Bay Beach.

A simple menu of:

• Caribbean BBQ ribs


• BBQ chicken


• Cold drinks

And absolutely the best view at the resort.

Galley Bay Resort & Spa

The Beach

Located on Galley Bay Beach, about 30 minutes from the airport, this beach was one of my favorites of the entire trip. (OK — it’s hard to pick a favorite when they’re all so spectacular.)

The Resort

Galley Bay is intimate and private, with only 100 suites spread across a large property. You will often feel like you’re the only ones there.

I love that each suite comes with snorkel equipment for you to use during your stay.

My Favorite Room

The Deluxe Beachfront — mere steps away from the ocean with your own sun loungers and umbrellas, numbered and assigned to each room.

No chair game before the sun comes up here!

Dining

Dining here is as unique as it is delicious. They have a farm‑to‑table concept across all menus and can fully accommodate special dietary needs including vegan, celiac, and more.

Final Thoughts

Antigua is a destination built for beach lovers, relaxers, and travelers who appreciate authenticity over flash. If that sounds like you, Antigua might just become one of your favorite islands.

Your kids are out of school, it’s wedding season, or this is the only time of year you can take time off work. You’ve scoured the internet, compared hotel websites, read Reddit threads, and convinced yourself you’ve found the perfect resort for your summer vacation in Cancun.

But here’s your reminder: not all resorts are created equal, and glossy marketing photos don’t tell the whole story.

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons, which means:

When the Dream Doesn’t Match the Reality

But you wake up on your first morning to brown, murky water and piles of seaweed. The smell isn’t romantic, and your beachfront spa treatment suddenly feels more disappointing than dreamy.

You booked a candlelight dinner on the beach expecting golden‑hour views over the ocean. Instead, the water is murky, the sand is messy, and the ambiance is nothing like the photos.

 

Even Pool Lovers Aren’t Safe From Summer Sargassum

The pictures have done their job. You’re officially ready to go to Kauai — the Garden Island filled with emerald mountains, golden beaches, and those dreamy Instagram sunsets. But once you’ve decided to book the trip, the next big question hits:

Where should you stay on Kauai?

Your best friend’s honeymoon, your brother’s golf getaway, or all those gorgeous Reddit and Instagram photos may have inspired you, but choosing the right resort depends on how you want to travel and what matters most to you: beach quality, convenience, romance, family‑friendly amenities, or overall value.

After spending time on Kauai recently, I’ve found that the South Shore (Poipu) and the East Side (Lihue/Wailua) offer the best mix of sunshine, beaches, and easy access to the island’s top sights. Below are my top four Kauai resorts — who they’re best for, what makes each special, and how to choose the right one for your trip.

🌴 Ko‘a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach

Best for: Couples, honeymoons, quiet luxury

Ko‘a Kea is a boutique luxury resort on one of Poipu’s best beaches, with fewer than 120 rooms.  That creates an intimate, peaceful atmosphere perfect for romance. Honeymooners receive a lei greeting and personal escort to their room, setting the tone for a special stay.

Poipu Beach is just steps away, offering swimmable conditions most of the year, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and frequent visits from honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and ‘īlio holo i ka uaua (Hawaiian monk seals —literally translating to “the dog that runs in rough water”).

You’re only 30 minutes from LIH airport and close to shopping, dining, golf, and marina excursions. Don’t miss sunrise yoga or the famous lemon soufflé pancakes at Red Salt.

🌺 Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort (Poipu)

Best for: Families, multi‑gen groups, active travelers

Sheraton Kaua‘i sits on a beautiful stretch of Poipu Beach with excellent swimming conditions and a lively, family‑friendly atmosphere. With multiple dining options on property — plus favorites like Puka Dog and The Beach House nearby — you’ll never run out of places to eat.  Frequent visitors consistently praise The Beach House for having the best sunset views on the island.

Activities are a major highlight: surf lessons, lei making, hula and ukulele classes, snorkeling, boogie boarding, and more. The on‑site luau is a huge perk since you don’t have to drive anywhere!

Room categories span a wide range of budgets, making it easy for families or groups to stay together without sacrificing comfort.

Why book Sheraton Kaua‘i: A beachfront resort with great swimming, tons of activities, and a moderate price point — ideal for families and couples who want energy and convenience.

🌅 Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort (Lihue)

Best for: Travelers who want convenience, big‑resort amenities, and a great pool

Just minutes from the airport, Royal Sonesta offers a wide golden‑sand beach, calm bay waters, and dramatic mountain views. Sunrises here are spectacular.

This is a large, full‑service resort with multiple dining options, including Duke’s Kauai down the beach, plus restaurants within walking distance. The standout feature is the massive, lagoon‑style pool — one of the best on the island.

Because of its location, you can easily stay here without renting a car. If you do rent one, the hotel’s on‑demand shuttle makes pickup simple and can save you money on rental & parking fees.

Why book Royal Sonesta: A convenient, affordable beachfront resort with one of Kauai’s best pools — perfect for travelers who prefer lounging by the water over ocean swimming.

🌊 OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort & Spa (Lihue/Wailua)

Best for: Value seekers, explorers, and travelers who love resort amenities

Located about 10 minutes north of the airport, the OUTRIGGER offers a relaxed, mid‑range resort experience with ocean views and a great central location for exploring the island.

While the ocean here isn’t swimmable due to strong currents, the resort makes up for it with four pools, a waterslide, a cascading waterfall, and a whirlpool. Many rooms have been recently renovated with fresh, modern Hawaiian décor.

Upgrading to the Voyager 47 Club adds exclusive lounge access with complimentary breakfast, evening cocktails, and upgraded amenities — the closest thing to an all‑inclusive experience on Kauai.

This location is ideal for day trips to the North Shore, including Wailua Falls, Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, and Hā‘ena State Park. The drive alone is worth it, with dramatic mountain peaks rising right beside the road.

Why book OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i: A great value for travelers who want a resort feel, updated rooms, and a central location for exploring — without needing a swimmable beach at the hotel.
