So, you’ve booked your first trip to Cancun—white-sand beaches, turquoise water, margaritas on repeat. What could go wrong?
Actually… nothing major. But there are definitely a few things I wish more people knew before arriving in this tropical playground.
Whether you’re heading to an all-inclusive resort or planning to explore the Riviera Maya, these insider tips will help you make the most of your trip—and avoid rookie mistakes.
Most travelers never leave the strip of beach resorts known as the Hotel Zone. But venture just a little outside and you’ll find vibrant local neighborhoods, authentic taco joints, colorful markets, and real Mexican culture.

Pro tip: Take a taxi to Mercado 28 in downtown Cancun for shopping and street food without the tourist markup.
2. Don’t Just Stay in Cancun—Explore the Riviera Maya

Cancun is your gateway to some of the best experiences in the Yucatán Peninsula. Think: swimming in cenotes, exploring Mayan ruins, snorkeling in coral reefs, and discovering magical beach towns like Tulum and Playa del Carmen.
Must-do: Day trip to Chichén Itzá or the lesser- known (but less crowded) ruins of Ek Balam.
These natural freshwater sinkholes are unique to the region and insanely beautiful. Some are open-air lagoons, others are mystical underground caves. Bring water shoes, a snorkel, and your sense of adventure.

Favorites: Cenote Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, or the Instagram-famous Cenote Suytun.

Sure, it’s tempting to stay poolside with endless mojitos. But Cancun is surrounded by unforgettable experiences. Book a cultural tour, go zip-lining through the jungle, or take a cooking class to learn about Yucatán flavors beyond buffet lines.
Balance the beach with real adventure.
The Caribbean sun is no joke. Even on cloudy days, you can burn fast. Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and the environment, especially if you’re swimming in cenotes or snorkeling.
Hot tip: Avoid spray sunscreens—they’re often banned in eco-parks and cenotes.
Cancun International Airport is busy and chaotic. Booking a trusted transfer ahead of time (instead of negotiating with random drivers) can save you time, money, and stress. Bonus if they greet you with a cold bottle of water.
Avoid the timeshare pitches in the arrivals hall—walk straight outside to your pre-arranged ride.
While some touristy spots accept U.S. dollars, using pesos gets you better prices. Local taxis, markets, and street vendors prefer pesos—and you’ll avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
ATMs at banks (not in resorts) offer the best rates.
Step outside your hotel for a taste of real Yucatán cuisine. Think cochinita pibil, fresh ceviche, and tacos al pastor that’ll ruin you for life.

Try: El Socio Naiz, Taqueria Los Chachalacos, or a local food tour in downtown Cancun.
Yes, Coco Bongo is wild. But there are also rooftop bars, beach clubs, salsa dancing spots, and low-key lounges if you want something more local or romantic.
Ask locals or your concierge for what’s trending that week—it changes fast.

Cancun might feel like a party bubble, but you’re still a guest in Mexico. Learn a few Spanish phrases, be polite to staff, tip generously, and take time to understand the rich Mayan heritage of the region.

You’ll connect more—and experience more—when you engage respectfully.
Cancun is a fantastic first taste of Mexico—but don’t stop there. The real magic lies just beyond the resort gates. Eat like a local, swim in sacred cenotes, explore ancient ruins, and let yourself fall in love with the richness of Riviera Maya.
Because the best trips are the ones where you leave with more than a tan—you come home with stories.
