Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a fascinating, bustling capital city on the banks of three rivers (the Mekong, the Tonle Sap and the Tonle Bassac), requires at least two full days to see. Begin with an overview of the city from atop Wat Phnom, and then head to the incredible Silver Pagoda in the Royal Palace complex.
Keep in mind that Cambodia still faces severe economic difficulties (international aid is helping to build roads and improve health care), political infighting that sometimes turns violent and danger from undetonated bombs (which minesweepers are seeking out). Still, tourism is a growing income source for the country, which is taking greater precautions to assure tourists can make visits to Angkor Wat and many of Cambodia's other ancient sites that highlight its long cultural history.
