With its spectacular setting among seven hills, Bergen is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable cities in Norway. Most sites are within an easy walk from the harbor. From fine surviving medieval buildings to a series of good museums such as Fishery Museum and Old Bergen open-air museum, Bergen offers a wide variety of attractions. Its scenic beauty can best be appreciated from Mt. Floyen and is captivating. Enjoy this lovely city by taking a stroll to the old part of town, passing impressive 12th-century Bergenhus fortress. Old Hanseatic Wharf, called Bryggen, is where reconstructed gabled buildings house workshops, boutiques and restaurants. St. Mary's Church is Bergen’s oldest building and one of the finest Norman churches in Norway. Rasmus Meyers Collection is a rambling townhouse featuring one of the best collections of Norwegian art, including an upper floor devoted almost entirely to Munch. Bergen boasts numerous historic buildings dating from medieval times: Bergenhus Fortress; Rosenkrantz Tower; Haakon’s Hall.

Bergen

Founded in AD 1070, Bergen, Norway, 190 mi/305 km northwest of Oslo, is the country's second largest—and one of its most attractive—cities. Bergen is a popular cruise ship destination that attracts visitors year-round, and it requires a three-night stay to see everything.

During the Middle Ages, Bergen was the seat of kings, as well as one of the departure points for Vikings who roamed the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. Even after Oslo emerged as Norway's capital, Bergen remained an important port city and a European cultural city.

Must See or Do

Sights—Bryggen, the historic wharf area; the outdoor fish market at Torget; the funicular to Mount Floyen.

Museums—Troldhaugen, the former home of composer Edvard Grieg; the world's largest collection of medieval runes at Bryggens Museum; some of Edvard Munch's masterpieces on display at KODE.

Memorable Meals—Innovative Nordic cuisine at Lysverket; a shilling bun and bag of freshly boiled shrimp from the fish market eaten on the waterfront.

Late Night—Live rock music at Garage; cocktails and lovely views at Taket; top-quality wines at the city's oldest tavern, Altona Vinbar.

Walks—The scenic hike from Mount Ulriken to Mount Floyen; an evening stroll through the quaint neighborhood of Sandviken.

Especially for Kids—The Bergen Aquarium; interactive science exhibits at Vil Vite

Location

Cruise ships dock within walking distance of Bergen's two major regions: Bryggen, which is the wharf district, and the town center, which has museums and gardens.

Shore Excursions

Popular excursions include tours of historic Bryggen, a visit to Troldhaugen and journeys up Mount Floyen.
