Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The train climbs almost 3,000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep grades and cliff-hanging turns. Along the way, you will experience the breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles and historic sites from the comfort of a vintage parlor car. You will also see Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and the original Trail of '98.
This vantage point near the mouth of the Skagway River has wonderful views that reinforce Alaska’s reputation as an unspoiled wilderness. To reach the point, hike along Smuggler’s Cove Trail, which begins within walking distance of where Seven Seas Explorer® docks.
Explore the halls and bedrooms of this infamous brothel and see original relics and images of the ladies of the evening that worked there. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the resident ghost, Lydia.
Inside this historic hall, which is sandwiched between two hotels built between 1916 and 1920, is what is billed as Alaska’s longest running theater production. The Days of ’98 Show recounts the early days of Skagway and the lawlessness spearheaded by town father Soapy Smith.
Peruse an impressive collection of Native American artifacts and art as well as the tools of the legendary gold miners.
Built in 1888 and one of the oldest buildings in Skagway, this cabin was home to the steamship captain who founded Skagway.
Old prospectors who never struck it rich and remained in Skagway are buried here along with several famous names, including Soapy Smith, the gentleman of dubious character who ran the town during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as Frank Smith, the man who gunned him down.
Located a short walk from the cemetery, this mountain waterfall cascades 300 feet down small rocks and large boulders. It is worth the short hike if you’re in the area.
This lovely spot features colorful gardens, a pond, vegetable patches and even a miniature train and tearoom. The gardens are located on the Klondike Highway just across the Skagway River Bridge.
Pan for gold in this recreation of a gold mining camp from the area’s frenzied heyday. Wander through the camp and visit the general store and saloon. At the bordello and laundry tents, view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind. Have your picture taken with one of the dance hall girls or the camp mascot, a loveable husky.
