Amidst the recent tragedy on Maui, the spirit remains strong. If you are considering a visit, please know that respectful travel to Maui, with the exception of Lahaina, is welcomed and encouraged, now more than ever. Your visit supports Maui's economy and Lahaina's ability to rebuild, especially when you are mindful of the island and its people.
SUNSHINE, SHOPPING AND WORLD-CLASS GOLF: West Maui offers equal parts action and relaxation.
Ka'anapali and Kapalua were once the sporting grounds of Hawaiian royalty.
Ka'anapali is known for its championship golf courses and beautiful white-sand beaches - perfect for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. Near the middle of Ka'anapali Beachwalk, seek refuge from the sun at Whalers Village. The beachfront shopping center has you covered with various designer boutiques, local artisans, restaurants with live music and cafes with locally grown coffee.
At the northwest tip of the island, the resort community of Kapalua is quieter and cooler than its neighbors to the south. The elegant and serene retreat is a prime destination for luxurious spas and superb dining. If you're visiting in June, don't miss the delicious dishes and drinks at the Kapalua Wine and Food Festival. And any time of the year, snorkel at Kapalua Beach and be on the lookout for Hawaii's state fish, the humuhumunukunukunpua'a (triggerfish).
1. MAUI TROPICAL PLANTATION
Take a narrated tram tour of this 60-acre working plantation. Learn about the origins and harvest techniques of Hawaii's commercial fruit crops, including sugar cane, star fruits, bananas, coffee, macadamia nuts, papaya and more.
2. SURFING GOAT DAIRY
Visit this state-of-the-art, working goat dairy farm with over 25 cheeses (including 11 National Award winners!), truffles and soaps.
3. MAUI TEA FARM
Located en route to Haleakala National Park, enjoy an hour-long guided walking tour of Hawaii's first and only tea farm. Learn all about the cultivation of tea, followed by a tea tasting.
4. KULA COUNTRY FARMS
Pick strawberries (February through June) amidst breathtaking hi-coastal views at Kula Country Farms. In October, enjoy different colors and varieties of cooking pumpkins, mini-pumpkins, and squashes at their annual pumpkin patch.
5.ALI'l KULA LAVENDER
This aromatic farm spans over eight acres with more than 25,000 lavender plants in over 40 varieties. Take a self-guided or organized garden tour and find a unique lavender gift to bring home.
The slopes of Haleakala descend gently to the lower altitudes of central Maui. The area about halfway down is known as the Upcountry, Maui's cowboy district: Ranches, horses, wooden fences and fields of wildflowers dot the landscape, away from the bustle of commercial activity on the island. If you seek tranquility, hike or ride horseback in these hills and look down to see the glittering coastline of Kihei and Wailea.Free Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui's higher elevations translate into cooler weather and a more pronounced change of seasons than in the coastal areas.
Hawaiian cowboys (paniolos) ride herd on several large ranches in the Upcountry. The paniolo mystique draws visitors to the town of Makawao, home of a thriving arts community. Settled by Portuguese immigrants in the late 1800s, it retains a friendly, rural flavor. The town's Old West facade includes hitching posts. There, visitors can take a yoga class and watch a rodeo in the same day.
Upcountry Maui has a rich agricultural history that continues to thrive at the hands of creative residents. Botanical gardens grow everything from calla lilies to Christmas trees. A lavender farm welcomes guests for tours, craft lessons, tea and scones. A winery produces red, white, sparkling and specialty varietals, while a goat farm crafts award-winning cheeses in a bucolic setting with unparalleled views down to the sea.
Small, picturesque burgs dot the winding roads of Upcountry Maui, presenting opportunities for shopping, dining, adventuring and touring. In Kula, for instance, visitors can pick their own produce at an organic farm and watch it get transformed into a lunchtime feast or grab a cup of coffee for a drive up the slopes of the volcano. In Haiku, you can rent two-wheelers and explore the beauty of the area under your own power, and in Pukalani, you can zipline across the slopes of Haleakala.
