Gan, the southernmost atoll in the archipelago, was once the site of a British Royal Air Force base and has its own airstrip. Some of the old military buildings are now foreign-owned garment factories that still retain their distinctive military appearance which makes for some interesting sightseeing. The Equator Village Resort on Gan, built on the foundations of former Royal Air Force barracks, offers exclusive access to some of the most unspoiled villages in the country.
One of the most unique aspects of Addu is that many of the islands are linked by causeway, so it's possible to hire bicycles and pedal from island to island. This gives visitors more freedom of access than almost anywhere else in the country.
Addu is also notable for its unique mangrove ecosystems and emerald lakes. Resorts and guesthouses encourage birdwatching and paddle-boarding along with the clear lagoons and beaches.
As such, Addu offers some unique historical, topographical and environmental attractions that the other atolls do not have.
