Today the city has physically recovered from most of the war damage caused by the Yugoslav Wars of the early nineties. Sarajevo is a cosmopolitan European capital with a unique Eastern twist that is a delight to visit. The people are very friendly, be they Bosniak, Serb, or Croat. Once ravaged by war, today Sarajevo is a symbol of renewal and modernization. Hotels, restaurant, stores and cafes have long since reopened. Modern shopping malls and international branded high-rise hotels have been built, and a normal bustle occurs on the streets. Today, Sarajevo is a fully-functioning, modern city with a large, beautiful historic district in the center and a sprawling modern city running out along the Miljacka River. Vast residential neighborhoods climb the mountainsides.
Outdoor events, including an important film festival, are held during the summer, and Jazz Fest Sarajevo, held in November, attracts an international audience. The National Theatre, various artist venues, art galleries and trendy shops are available. Sarajevo is definitely attracting visitors once more as a multicultural, cosmopolitan city.
Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, which made Bosnia and Herzegovina the first communist country to host the Olympics. Visitors to this fascinating, historically-rich city have much to look forward to.
Visiting the historic district, which includes both an Austro-Hungarian section and a Turkish Quarter, known as the Bascarsija (pronounced Bash-CHAR-she-ya), is one of the main highlights of Sarajevo. Other major attractions and activities include walking along the park-lined Miljacaka River, taking the cable car to the top of Trebevic Mountain for panoramic views over the city, exploring the old fortress region with the White Bastion and Yellow Bastion, visiting the historic war tunnel on the outskirts of the city, and paying a visit to the Sarajevo Olympic site and museum.
