In eastern El Salvador 75 mi/120 km east of San Salvador, San Miguel is near the picturesque 6,994-ft/2,132-m San Miguel Volcano.

There is little in the way of sights in San Miguel, but the town itself is intriguing, with bustling street markets, nice parks and a cathedral from the 1700s.

It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Another 10 mi/16 km east, on the border near Honduras and the Golfo de Fonseca, the small town of La Union is rarely seen by visitors. Like San Miguel, there's not much to see, but this fishing village is very charming. Add a day there if time allows.

Founded in 1542 as a way station for wagon trains, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is popular with U.S. and Canadian retirees, artists and writers. The town's centro zone is a national monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, so changes to its beautiful buildings and cobblestoned streets are prohibited.

Take time to admire the Gothic Revival La Parroquia church built by a self-taught mason and the carved-wood doors on homes lining the narrow streets. San Miguel de Allende is very touristy, however, with many art galleries and T-shirt shops filling those lovely buildings.

The influence of foreign residents has resulted in a bilingual community blessed with language schools, art institutes and cultural activities, but that also illustrates the considerable economic disparities between its foreign residents (who now outnumber natives 4-to-1) and its original Mexican residents.

There's also a world-famous chamber-music festival (August), a jazz festival (late November), and frequent concerts and lectures. The town still retains an authentic Mexican flair with many fiesta days and dances. Strollers and mariachi players fill the town square at night.

To the north of town and set within a rocky canyon is El Charco del Ingenio, a nature reserve and botanical garden with many varieties of cacti. It's a great place to bike or take a stroll.

San Miguel de Allende and nearby Dolores Hidalgo (25 mi/40 km north) were both birthplaces of the Mexican War of Independence. Padre Hidalgo and Ignacio Allende planned—in both towns—the insurrection that started the 1810 revolution.

San Miguel de Tucuman is surrounded by beautiful scenery and best known simply as Tucuman. Founded by the Spanish in 1565, Tucuman is a nice place to take a vacation from your vacation in Argentina—it's 660 mi/1,065 km northwest of Buenos Aires, the pace is slow, the year-round climate is mild (60s-70s F/15-27 C), and accommodations are more than adequate.

Many Spanish colonial buildings remain, including the Casa de la Independencia, where Argentine independence was declared in 1816. For fine views of the city, excursions can be made to Villa Nougues or San Javier, the paragliding capital of Argentina thanks to its air currents and hilly location. North of Tucuman, near the town of Tafi, is Parque de los Menhires, where there are a number of dolmens (ancient monuments).

Tafi, with its lovely microclimate, lush gorges and green hills, is worth a visit in itself; it lies on the road connecting Tucuman to Quilmes and Cafayate. There are also many sacred stone circles in the area from ancient inhabitants.
