Because it is mainly agricultural, Moheli is rarely visited. But it has a fascinating marine reserve with sea turtles and coral reefs. You may get to watch sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs—inquire locally.
If you do get to Moheli, go snorkeling or diving at Niumashuwa Bay and the islands off the southern coast. This is some of the best diving in the Comoros, so allow several days for a visit.
If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the rare dugong—a manateelike creature thought to be the inspiration for mermaids. (Because the dugong cow sometimes nurses with its upper half sticking out of the water, the mermaid myth may be based on sightings of dugong cows and calves by love-starved sailors.)
There are a number of hiking paths on the island.
