Overview
Introduction
La Plata, Argentina—capital of Buenos Aires Province and 35 mi/55 km southeast of the city of Buenos Aires—has one of the largest cathedrals in South America, a neo-Gothic gem with eight towers of different heights. Construction started at the end of the 19th century and took almost 50 years to complete.
While in town, visit the Museum of Natural Science (http://www.museo.fcnym.unlp.edu.ar), which many consider to be the best in Argentina. It is famous for its dinosaur skeletons, but exhibits also include mummies and human skulls.
Also a university town, there is a relaxed student ambience with an abundance of bars and cafes.
Visitors can easily while away a day here, but not much more. La Plata is easy to reach by train or bus from downtown Buenos Aires.
