Giurgiu is located on the mud flats and marshes of the Danube River, across the bay from Rousse, Bulgaria. A large island, Smarda, shelters the port.
Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is located 39 mi/63 km from the town. The fastest way to travel to Bucharest is to take a bus, which takes slightly over an hour. At least one bus leaves Giurgiu per hour. There are also direct trains to and from Bucharest, but the trip lasts at least two-and-a-half hours.
Giurgiu is a lovely tourist destination with a variety of small hotels and quaint restaurants. Favorite landmarks in the city include the Clock Tower, which dates from the 16th century, the ruins of the local fortress, and the town's historical museum. Visitors can explore the beautiful landscape on a boat tour or try fishing in the Danube River.
To visit Bulgaria without the cost of taking a train or bus, hire a taxi to the end of the Friendship Bridge and walk across, which takes about 15 minutes.
