Introduction

The fog-shrouded town of Eureka, California, and its nearby neighbor, Arcata, were built by timber companies. Situated on the rugged northern coast, 225 mi/360 km north of San Francisco, the towns seem like outposts of civilization in the midst of the wilderness.

Many of the timber barons chose to live in Eureka, and it shows: The town has a good collection of Victorian architecture, with the most opulent (some might say gaudy) example being the Carson Mansion. It has become one of the most photographed Victorian homes in the world. Photographing the three-story redwood mansion is all you'll be able to do, however. A great treat in Eureka is dinner at the Samoa Cookhouse on Woodley Island, which is reached by the Somoa Bridge. It was originally a lumber-camp cookhouse that began serving workers in 1893. Humboldt County, which encompasses both Eureka and Arcata, has more artists per capita than any other county in California and a fair number of marijuana farmers as well (no direct correlation has been established). The area has something of a 1960s atmosphere, and nowhere is that more clear than in Arcata, just across the bay from Eureka. Not surprisingly, there have been many environmental initiatives undertaken by the town, one of which is the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Created from a former landfill, the marsh naturally treats the town's wastewater and also serves as a haven for birds and bird-watchers. Another nearby nature area is the Lanphere-Christensen Dunes Preserve, which includes sand dunes, salt marshes and a large variety of birds.

Like Eureka, the town has a good sampling of Victorian architecture and other historic buildings: Most of them can be seen on the city's self-guided walking tour. There are eclectic shops, restaurants and bars, many of them clustered around Arcata Plaza.

The town's notorious annual event is the Kinetic Grand Championship race held on Memorial Day weekend. People-powered contraptions (call them sculptures if you will) complete a 38-mi/60-km course over three days, with the highest award going not to the winner but to the contestant who comes in closest to the middle. There are several sights of note outside both towns. Just south of Eureka, and well worth the trip, is the pastoral Victorian town of Ferndale (http://ci.ferndale.ca.us). It was first settled in 1864 by Danish immigrants, and it remains a thriving small town of people who gossip on street corners and take turns shuttling kids to Future Farmers of America and 4-H meetings. Stop by the Ferndale Museum for some local history, and take time to appreciate Ferndale's striking Gingerbread Mansion, which is a popular bed-and-breakfast. Trinidad, 12 mi/20 km north of Arcata, is a small, picturesque village that was one of the largest towns on the coast in the mid-1800s. It has an aquarium as well as two beaches and a lighthouse. A number of sport and commercial fishing boats are based in the town. http://www.trinidadcalif.com.

Willow Creek, 25 mi/40 km east of Arcata, is in the Six Rivers National Forest on the border of Humboldt and Trinity counties. A center for white-water rafting, several companies offer trips on the Salmon, Trinity, Klamath, Smith and Eel rivers.

The many cold-water natural springs in Eureka Springs were once famed for their restorative properties. They've drawn people for centuries, and in the late 1800s, this scenic town in the Ozark Mountains became one of the state's popular resorts. Today, the springs are polluted and no longer used as a treatment, but so much of the town's 19th-century architecture remains that Eureka Springs is on the National Register of Historic Places.

It's very easy to spend several days in Eureka Springs, located 140 mi/225 km northwest of Little Rock. You can browse the work of the many artisans who live there (a large arts-and-craft district is downtown) and look at the elegant Victorian houses. Some of the hotels in town are also more than a century old, including the Crescent Hotel and the Palace Hotel and Bath House; both offer spa services that continue the town's tradition of providing rejuvenating treatments. In addition to vintage buildings, there's a piece of contemporary architecture that should not be missed: E. Fay Jones' Thorncrown Chapel is in a forest on the western edge of town. The chapel's soaring glass walls seem to bring the forest inside, creating a truly inspiring place to pray or meditate. It's a very popular site for weddings.

Spiritual rejuvenation is a big topic in Eureka Springs, and a number of attractions with a Christian theme are found at the foot of the seven-story Christ of the Ozarks statue. The Great Passion Play is presented there several times a week late April-late October. The New Holy Land Tour is a type of living-history park that depicts Biblical sites (Moses' tabernacle in the wilderness, the stable where Jesus was born and others). There's also a Bible Museum, a Sacred Arts Center, even a segment of the Berlin Wall. With its springs, new-age shops and hippie heritage, the town also draws followers of alternative forms of spirituality, including paganism.

Other options include Quigley's Castle (a bizarre home in which just about every visible surface is covered with rocks, marbles or live plants), the gardens at Blue Spring Heritage Center, one of Arkansas' largest springs, and Onyx Cave. The Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway operates sightseeing and dinner excursions in vintage trains, though their run is a rather short 4 mi/7 km. Eureka Springs is also known for its very corny hillbilly revues. The Original Ozark Folk Festival, which draws big-name national acts, is held in October.

West of Eureka Springs is Beaver Lake, a popular watersports playground. Northwest of the lake is Pea Ridge National Military Park, which commemorates the Civil War battle (March 1862) that kept Missouri part of the Union. Be sure to take the 7-mi/11-km drive through the park and spend time at the visitors center. Across the state line is country-music mecca Branson, Missouri.
