Overview
Introduction

Trier, Germany, is a 2,000-year-old Roman city near Luxembourg. It was home to six Roman emperors and has many ruins, including the impressive Porta Nigra, a four-story stone gate that was once part of the city's walls. It is also the birthplace of Karl Marx (Bruckenstrasse 10) and is a university town with a lively nightlife and interesting Franco-German cuisine.
Located 143 mi/230 km west of Frankfurt, it's well worth a day trip. If time permits, consider the boat trip up the Moselle to the neighborhood of Pfalzel to see the scenery.
Location
Trier is a stop for many river cruises along the Moselle, the more relaxed sister to the Rhine, and most cruise ships dock at Zurlaubener Ufer. Upon disembarking, head for the massive Porta Negra ("black gate"), which is the gateway to Trier's downtown area and is conveniently close to a tourist information office.
