Some of the top activities Costa Rica has to offer...
You want to visit Costa Rica! Awesome, we can help get you there. But one of the questions we’ll ask in helping you do so is what you’d like to see and do there. Relax? Explore nature? Seek adventure? All the above and more? Probably. There is just so much available, we’ll need to have a serious discussion on what your priorities are. To help we’ve put together a list of eight of the best activities to do during your visit. After reading let us know what’s on the top of yours!
8 Great Activities Costa Rica Has To Offer
1. Hiking – An activity that likely is top of mind when you think of Costa Rica and there certainly is no shortage of places to do so. Volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests – the choice is yours. Once that’s settled, think about the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with. These two things will help in the best recommendation. Additionally, it is suggested you consider guided hikes. Your expert leader will be able to provide general assistance and a trained eye to spot wildlife.
2. Surfing – Surfers from around the world frequent Costa Rica year-round because of its warm waters and waves. Choose your coast – Pacific or Caribbean, select your level of experience – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. We can even make some recommendations. If you’re in need of a lesson, they’re typically easy to find, even just by stepping foot on some beaches!
3. Snorkeling and Scuba – Wildlife sightings aren’t limited to land. There are 7,000+ marine species that can be found in Costa Rica’s surrounding waters. So, it is no surprise that it is on the top of the list for water activities. If you’re a snorkeler, think about if you’d like to do so by boat or shore. If a diver, we can help recommend dive sites. Just let us know your level of experience.
4. Whitewater Rafting – Costa Rica provides a stunning background for this adventure. There are a few areas that would be recommended if this is something you’d like to do. Beginner or advanced, let us know what intensity of rapids you’re comfortable with, and we can point you in the right direction. If the kiddos are up for the challenge, there are some options that are suitable for them too. It’s a great family activity!
5. Visit Waterfalls – Some of the most picturesque sights in Costa Rica can be found at its numerous waterfalls. After all, there’s something so magical about water cascading over a cliff to the pools below. There are plenty of options to choose from, just keep in mind a few things. Some falls will require a hike to access, entrance fees will vary, and some allow swimming while others do not. Also consider a guided tour if you won’t have access to a rental car during your stay.
6. Zip Lining – If you’ve Googled “excursions in Costa Rica” you’ve likely seen a picture of someone effortlessly flying over green canopy, rivers, and cliffs. It’s a very popular activity that can be found all over the country. You should expect a safety demo and a short hike. Then you’ll glide line by line, each getting a little longer than the one before. If you’re an adrenaline seeker this is a must do! If not, we wouldn’t recommend it. Do not invest money in something if you’re not 100% comfortable with.
7. Bird Watching – It isn’t unusual for people to travel to Costa Rica for this very reason. Some enthusiasts even build a whole itinerary around this activity. There is 900+ species and most often seen will likely be toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds. Because the country is so eco-diverse, make a couple of watching stops. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
8. Yoga – Yes, you read that right! Costa Rica is indeed a haven for yoga lovers. You could see or take a class quite literally anywhere – a resort, beach, volcano, or rainforest. If you’re a beginner, give it a try at least once. If you’re a wellness enthusiast and it’s your reason for travel, it belongs on your list. Think wellness retreat, group trip for your studio, location for instructor training or continuing education.
There you have it, some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer! Of course, there’s a ton more that isn’t listed, so if you have any questions let us know. If you’re ready to explore all that Costa Rica has to offer, please feel free to reach out!

Cancun is a destination synonymous with luxury, relaxation, and vibrant culture, nestled along the breathtaking Caribbean coastline of Mexico. But did you know that this tropical paradise extends far beyond the Cancun Hotel Zone, far North and South of the city center? Surrounding the Cancun International Airport (CUN) are several captivating towns, each offering its own unique charm and array of activities for travelers to indulge in.
Just a scenic drive south of Cancun lies the charming town of Playa del Carmen. Known for its stunning beaches and lively atmosphere, Playa del Carmen beckons visitors with its vibrant nightlife, eclectic shopping scene, and delectable culinary offerings. Stroll along the iconic Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) to explore artisanal shops, trendy boutiques, and bustling cafes, or bask in the sun on the pristine shores of Playacar Beach. Among some of the best resorts in Playa Del Carmen are Secrets Maroma, Grand Velas, Xcaret, which I like to refer to as the Disney of Mexico, and Sandos which is a local hot spot!
For those seeking a more tranquil escape, the trendy bohemian town of Tulum offers a serene retreat amidst ancient ruins and azure waters. Explore the majestic Mayan archaeological site overlooking the Caribbean Sea, or unwind at one of the many eco-friendly resorts nestled along the coast. Tulum's laid-back vibe and breathtaking natural beauty make it the perfect destination for eco-conscious travelers and wellness enthusiasts alike. It is important to note that many resorts that have Tulum in the name, are not actually located in Tulum, but likely within a 30 minute drive of the town. There are not many All Inclusive resorts located in the town of Tulum, and there are some resorts that offer more of a “Glamping” experience, so it is important to do your research or work with an experienced Travel Advisor. In December 2023, the Tulum International Airport opened, and the first international flight landed at TQO on March 28, 2024, making this destination much more accessible for International travelers.
Just a short ferry ride from Cancun lies the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres, a tropical paradise known for its crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches. Spend your days snorkeling amidst vibrant coral reefs, swimming with dolphins at the Turtle Farm, or simply lounging on the powdery white sands of Playa Norte. With its charming streets lined with colorful buildings and welcoming locals, Isla Mujeres offers a glimpse into the authentic charm of coastal Mexico. This 7 mile island offers a really cool, laid back vibe with dozens of Beach Clubs and local eateries. Again, you will only find a handful of All Inclusive options on Isla Mujeres, but they are not all cut from the same mold. The island is home to Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets, which was recently named the most Instagrammable Hotel in the World!
Just north of the Cancun airport is Costa Mujeres. Known for its pristine beaches and luxury all-inclusive resorts, Costa Mujeres provides a more secluded and upscale alternative to the busier hotel zone in Cancún, making it an attractive destination for those looking for a more exclusive and serene experience. This area feels calm and secluded but is just 30 minutes away from Cancun's bustling restaurants and nightlife and a quick boat ride from the magical island of Isla Mujeres. You can even look out from the beach and see the island, which also provides a great natural barrier for the pesky costal seaweed.
While the allure of Cancun and its surrounding towns is undeniable, it's essential to address some more recent concerns regarding safety and crime. According to statistics, the crime rate in Cancun and its surrounding areas is relatively low compared to most major cities in America, like New York City and Chicago. However, like any tourist destination, it gets a lot of publicity when a crime poses a treat to tourists and innocent bystanders, making potential travelers reconsider it as a vacation destination. Crime can happen anywhere and anytime, so it's crucial for travelers to exercise caution and remain vigilant, particularly in crowded areas and at night. By taking common-sense precautions and staying informed, visitors can enjoy their time in this region safely and securely.
In the vast expanse of the Cancun area, one is met with hundreds of resorts to choose from. The options can seem endless. Navigating this sea of choices can be overwhelming, but this just shows the importance of enlisting the expertise of an experienced travel agent. Whether you seek a romantic getaway, a family-friendly retreat, or an adventure-packed vacation, there's a resort tailored to suit every preference and budget. A knowledgeable travel agent can help narrow down the options based on your specific desires and requirements, ensuring you find the perfect resort that offers the best value for your money. With insider knowledge of each resort's amenities, dining options, activities, and overall ambiance, they can provide invaluable insights from firsthand experiences and client feedback, helping you make an informed decision that aligns with your preferences and budget.
Travel agents very often will have access to exclusive deals, discounts, and packages that may not be readily available to the general public. By leveraging their industry connections and expertise, they can help you secure the best possible rates and added perks, maximizing the value of your vacation investment. In a destination as diverse and dynamic as Cancun, having a trusted travel agent by your side can make all the difference between a good vacation and an extraordinary one. Their guidance and expertise not only simplify the planning process but also ensure that your getaway exceeds expectations, leaving you with cherished memories to last a lifetime.
Need help booking your next vacation? I would love to help you narrow down the best resort, in the best destination that checks all of your boxes. I have visited over 3 dozen resorts in the Cancun area alone, and many more in destinations like Punta Cana, Jamaica, Cozumel, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta. I gain valuable insight with each resort that I visit! I would love to use my experience to build you the perfect vacation! Nestled in the heart of Italy stands Civita Di Bagnoregio, a magnificent village perched atop a plateau of tufa rock. I had the pleasure of visiting this magical place last year, and was left in awe of its rich history and charm. Often referred to as the 'dying town' due to its dwindling population, Civita Di Bagnoregio is a place that is quite literally frozen in time. A hidden gem that not many tourist know of, Civita Di Bagnoregio was the most immersive and authentic Italian experience I had while visiting Italy. Standing on the edge of the village, looking out over the surrounding landscape, I felt the need to pinch myself, because it felt like I was in a fairytale.
The history of Civita Di Bagnoregio is fascinating. Standing for 2500 years, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Italy. Its strategic location on top of a plateau made it an ideal defensive outpost, and over the centuries, it flourished as a bustling medieval town. However, the town's isolation also became its downfall. Erosion of the surrounding cliffs gradually isolated Civita Di Bagnoregio from the rest of the world, leading to a decline in its population. Today, only 10 residents call this historic town home, adding to its mystique and allure. 10 people total! Some might even call it a ghost town!
Despite its small size, Civita Di Bagnoregio boasts an abundance of reasons to visit. For history enthusiasts, the town is a treasure trove of architectural marvels, with narrow cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and medieval buildings at every turn. The iconic stone bridge, known as Ponte della Torre, provides a breathtaking entrance to the town and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This pedestrian bridge provides the only way in or out of the city. You must walk the quarter mile bridge to get to the entrance of the village, so pack your walking shoes! But, it is truly worth the hike!
Art lovers will find inspiration in Civita Di Bagnoregio's tranquil ambiance, with its timeless beauty captured by countless artists over the centuries. The town's rustic charm and unspoiled landscapes make it a haven for photographers seeking to capture the essence of rural Italy.
Food enthusiasts will delight in the local cuisine with fresh ingredients sourced from the surrounding countryside. From hearty pastas to savory meats and cheeses, Civita Di Bagnoregio offers a taste of authentic Italian fare that's sure to tantalize the taste buds. We ate lunch at ill Pozzo die Desideri, which sits inside a cav, lit with candles. It was a very authentic Italian experience, and the food was fantastic!
For those seeking a retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Civita Di Bagnoregio offers a wonderfully peaceful sanctuary where time seems to just stand still. Strolling through the town's historic streets, feels like a dream. Make sure to shop at the locally owned gift shops in the city! You won’t find anything Made in China, only authentic Italian treats, cookbooks, and housewares. If you’re hungry, you can savor a meal at one of the many local trattorias. Or simply take in the beautiful panoramic views from atop the plateau. Civita Di Bagnoregio will force you to slow down, unwind, and savor the simple pleasures of life. Don’t we all need that!?!
How to get there: Civita Di Bagnoregio is easily accessible from both Rome and Florence, making it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway for travelers exploring central Italy. From Rome, visitors can take a train to Orvieto, followed by a bus or taxi to the nearby town of Bagnoregio. From there, it's a short walk to the foot of the plateau, where a shuttle bus or a scenic hike across the Ponte della Torre awaits. Alternatively, travelers coming from Florence can take a train to Chiusi, followed by a bus or taxi to Bagnoregio. From there, the same options for reaching Civita Di Bagnoregio are available.
Access to Civita Di Bagnoregio is affordable for most travelers, with reasonable fees for shuttle buses and guided tours available from the nearby town of Bagnoregio. Admission to the town itself is 3 euro on weekdays and 5 euro on weekends and holidays. Visitors can explore at their own pace and soak in the atmosphere without breaking the bank.
In conclusion, Civita Di Bagnoregio offers a glimpse into Italy's rich history and cultural heritage, with its timeless beauty and tranquil ambiance captivating travelers from around the world. Whether you're drawn to its historic charm, scenic landscapes, or authentic cuisine, Civita Di Bagnoregio promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you longing to return again and again.
