I thought I knew what a spa day felt like; soft music, light pressure, maybe a hot stone or two.
Then I tried a hydrotherapy circuit at St. Somewhere Spa at Margaritaville Island Reserve Resort Riviera Maya.
Within 20 minutes, I was sweating in a sauna, plunging into ice-cold water, and standing in front of high-powered jets that felt like they were recalibrating my entire nervous system.
What started as a “relaxing massage appointment” turned into a full-body reset at Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how intense (and amazing) it would be.
If you’ve ever wondered whether hydrotherapy is worth adding to your Spa itinerary, here’s exactly what to expect.
Located on the third floor of the adults-only beachfront resort, St. Somewhere Spa feels like you’ve stepped into a tranquil space. The music is soft, the air smells like eucalyptus and something expensive, and the welcome is warm without being over-the-top.
The spa menu is stacked: massages, facials, body treatments, hand and foot rituals, beauty services; the works. But here’s the real perk: when you book a treatment, you get complimentary access to the hydrotherapy circuit for an hour.
Since my signature ritual was 80 minutes long, that meant I’d have over two hours of spa relaxation; that I planned to take advantage of.
Before this trip, I’ve seen “hydrotherapy” listed on spa menus and had honestly thought it was just a fancy word for hot tub access.
It is not.
A hydrotherapy circuit is a guided thermal experience designed to move your body through cycles of heat, cold, and targeted water pressure. The goal? Boost circulation, reduce inflammation, stimulate lymphatic drainage, and reset your nervous system.
In theory, it sounds relaxing.
In practice? It’s invigorating, shocking, soothing, and slightly humbling all at once.
1. The Rinse-Off
You start in your swimsuit with a full-body shower. This isn’t just for hygiene, it preps your pores and gets your body ready for the thermal shift ahead.
2. The Sauna Sweat Session
You’re instructed to lie down and stay for about 10–15 minutes. Within five minutes, I was sweating like I’d just ran a 5K in the Mexican sun (not that I’ve done one, but that’s how I’d imagine it). It’s an intense, detox-style heat that loosens tight muscles and opens everything up.
At this point, I was feeling calm.
That calm didn’t last long.
3. The Arctic Plunge
They tell you to submerge up to your shoulders. I like a challenge, but this water felt like it had been shipped directly from the Arctic.
It’s shocking. It steals your breath in a second. But once you settle in, it’s wildly energizing. The contrast from sauna to cold immersion wakes up your circulation instantly.
Would I describe it as pleasant? Not immediately.
Would I do it again? Absolutely.
4. The Jet Therapy Circuit
This was my favorite part.
You rotate through different stations in a pool lined with powerful hydro jets that target specific areas of the body:
Each station uses strong water pressure to massage muscles and stimulate blood flow. At times, it felt like a deep tissue massage delivered by water.
It’s intense but in a “hurt so good” way. You can literally feel tension melting away. Expect to get fully wet, even your hair.
5. The Whirlpool Wind-Down
Finally, you ease into a heated whirlpool.
This is where relaxation truly sets in. After all the heat, cold, and pressure, your body starts to settle. My breathing slowed. My muscles softened. I could’ve easily drifted off.
After 45–60 minutes (you control the pace) your circuit is completed. Then I was wrapped in a warm towel and escorted to a dim relaxation room to await my massage therapist.
And that’s when things leveled up.

From the signature collection, I chose the Mezcalito Mi Amor wellness ritual. A treatment that blends traditional techniques with deep tissue bodywork.
When booking, they asked about pressure preference. This is important.
I get monthly massages at home for overall wellness and lymphatic support, so I’m not new to deep pressure. I asked for firm and I meant it.
Generally speaking you’ll receive firmer pressure from a male masseuse. My therapist, Queen, has over 25 years of experience. And you can tell within the first five minutes when someone knows exactly what they’re doing.
The treatment began with a smoky foot cleansing ceremony.
Seated with my eyes gently covered, my feet were exfoliated and purified in what felt like an ancient grounding ritual. A Maraca-inspired cleansing element was incorporated symbolically shaking off negative energy before the massage began.
It felt spiritual without being overdone. Thoughtful. Intentional.
And then we moved to the table.

Queen incorporated elements of Lomi Lomi, a traditional Hawaiian technique known for long, flowing strokes that mimic ocean waves.
This style uses palms, forearms, and controlled body weight to create rhythmic, fluid movement across the muscles. The goal is not just muscle relief; it’s nervous system regulation and energetic balance.
Agave body oil was used to enhance glide and circulation.
He began with lighter pressure (as most therapists do), and here’s where I’ll say this clearly:
Communication matters.
After a few minutes, I let him know I was comfortable with deeper pressure. From that point on, it was exactly what I was hoping for - intentional, strong, and therapeutic without being reckless.
He worked through pressure points along my back, shoulders, and hips areas that had been holding onto months of stress. There was stretching. There was kneading. There was that borderline “is this pain or pleasure?” moment that deep tissue lovers understand.
And yes, it was worth it.
The treatment ended with scalp pressure point therapy and the soft ringing of a ceremonial singing bowl. A symbolic close honoring the physical and mental release achieved during the session.
By the time I stood up, I felt lighter. Aligned. Slightly wobbly but in a good way.
If this is your first hydrotherapy or deep tissue experience, here are a few honest tips:
In one word? Yes.
The combination of thermal contrast therapy, targeted jet massage, and a deeply customized bodywork session makes this more than just a spa appointment. It’s a full body reset.
If you’re planning a honeymoon, girls’ trip, solo wellness escape, or simply want to elevate your Mexico itinerary, adding the hydrotherapy circuit at Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya is absolutely worth it.
I went in expecting a relaxing massage.
I left feeling like my nervous system had been rebooted.
And honestly? I’m already looking forward to the next plunge.
