Most people don't come home from vacation saying, "I wish we'd packed different shoes."
The regrets that stick with us are usually much bigger. They're the moments when you look back and think, "If we'd only known..."
The good news is that many of the most common vacation regrets can be avoided with a little planning before you ever leave home. Here are some of the things travelers most often wish they'd done differently—and how you can avoid those same regrets on your next trip.
People rarely say this because they didn't check enough attractions off their list.
More often, it's because they discovered too late what they truly enjoyed. The beach they couldn't wait to get back to. The little town they wished they'd explored longer. The café they wanted to visit one more time.
One of the best parts of planning a vacation is thinking beyond everything you could do and focusing on what you'll enjoy most. When you start with those priorities, it's much easier to decide whether it's worth adding an extra day—or simply spending more time on the experiences that matter most to you.
When I'm helping someone plan a vacation, one of the first conversations we have is about what they want to remember when they come home. Once we know that, it's much easier to decide whether adding another day or planning the itinerary differently will create a trip that feels less rushed and more rewarding.
If you've ever found yourself with twenty browser tabs open comparing resorts that all start to look the same, you're not alone.
With so many destinations, hotels, cruises, and online opinions, it's easy to feel like there's one perfect answer and that choosing the wrong one could ruin your vacation. In reality, there are usually several great options. The challenge isn't finding the "best" one—it's finding the one that's the best fit for you.
This is where I can save my clients the most time and stress. Instead of sorting through thousands of options on your own, I narrow the choices to the handful that truly fit your travel style, budget, and priorities. You still make the final decision—but you're choosing between great options instead of wondering if you missed a better one.

This doesn't necessarily mean the hotel was bad. More often, it simply wasn't the right fit.
Maybe it was farther from the beach than you expected. Maybe it was in the middle of the nightlife when you were hoping for peace and quiet. Or maybe it looked beautiful online but didn't match the kind of vacation you had imagined.
Where you stay shapes your entire experience. Choosing accommodations isn't just about star ratings or amenities. It's about finding the location and atmosphere that best fit the vacation you're hoping to have.
One of the questions I ask every client is, "What do you picture yourself doing on this vacation?" The answer usually tells us far more about where you should stay than a list of amenities ever could. The right location can completely change how your vacation feels.
Planning is part of the fun, but it's possible to plan so much that there's no room left for surprises.
Some of the best vacation memories happen when you stumble across a local café, spend an extra hour at a beach you didn't want to leave, or decide to skip an activity because relaxing by the pool suddenly sounds like a better idea.
Having a plan is important. Giving yourself permission to change it can be just as valuable.
When I help build an itinerary, I always try to leave a little breathing room. That doesn't mean wasting time—it means creating space for the unexpected discoveries and spontaneous moments that often become the stories you tell long after you get home.
Most travelers don't know what they don't know.
Should we stay in this part of town? Is the upgraded room worth it? Would splitting our stay between two locations make the trip even better? Does travel protection make sense for this vacation?
Those aren't always questions you'll think to ask when you're booking online, but they can have a big impact on your overall experience.
One of the biggest advantages of working with a travel advisor is having someone who knows which questions are worth asking before you book. My job isn't just to make reservations—it's to help you think through the decisions that can make the biggest difference once you're there.
The famous attractions are famous for a reason, and many of them absolutely deserve a place on your itinerary.
But ask someone about their favorite vacation memory, and it's often something they never planned. A neighborhood restaurant. A recommendation from a local. A quiet beach they found by accident. A conversation with another traveler.
Those unexpected moments often become the stories people tell long after they get home.
That's why I always encourage travelers to leave room for a few experiences beyond the "must-see" list. Whether it's a local restaurant, a food tour, or simply wandering through a neighborhood, those moments often become the highlight of the entire vacation.

Most vacations go exactly as planned, and that's what everyone hopes for. But weather delays, unexpected illnesses, lost luggage, or family emergencies can happen when you least expect them. When they do, they don't just interrupt your vacation—they can also put a significant financial investment at risk.
Travel protection isn't about expecting something to go wrong. It's about knowing that if life throws you a curveball, you're not left wondering what to do next. Instead of turning an unexpected event into a financial catastrophe, it can provide options, support, and peace of mind when you need it most.
That's why I always recommend having the conversation before you book. Together, we can talk through your trip, your investment, and your comfort level to decide whether travel protection makes sense for you. My goal isn't to sell you something you don't need—it's to make sure you understand your options before you leave home.
The vacations people remember most aren't necessarily the most expensive or the ones with the busiest itineraries. They're the ones that fit the people taking them.
Most of the regrets above aren't really mistakes. They're simply things travelers couldn't have known before they booked. That's one of the biggest advantages of working with a travel advisor. I can help you narrow the options, ask the questions you may not have thought about, and build a vacation around the experience you're hoping to have—not just the destination you've chosen.
