The Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals is Beaches, is promoting early childhood education with the launch of Project Sprout. Through this new initiative, the Sandals Foundation aims to help children better achieve their developmental milestones by promoting reading and writing skills from their very first years in school.
According to a 2009 study conducted by the Planning Institute of Jamaica, only 50 percent of first grade students are ready for primary level education. Project Sprout is a targeted intervention program that aims to improve this statistic by providing upgrades to school infrastructure; supplying teaching and learning aids such as books, computers and educational tours; bringing in early childhood specialists and social workers; and facilitating parental involvement in the children’s education at school and at home.
