What are the Different Types of Safaris you can do in Africa?

There are many types of safaris you can do in Africa! You could go on a traditional safari and explore the savannahs and see the Big 5 animals (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo). You can also explore the savannahs on a walking safari, and get a closer look at the local wildlife and vegetation. If you want to explore the African bush more, you can go on a horseback safari and take in the scenery from a different perspective. If you're more of an aquatic person, you can go on a boat safari on the canals and rivers, and see the animals that inhabit the area. Finally, if you want a unique experience, you can go on a hot-air balloon safari and get a bird's-eye view of the African landscape. No matter which type of safari you choose, you are sure to have a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

Common Questions Asked About Safaris and Things to Understand

Is there wifi? Wifi has become something that most camps/lodges provide. It is not always the best due to remote locations but good enough to message etc.

When you get a safari quote from a travel agency, make sure they include:
Park fees, conservation fees, gate fees, concession fees etc in the quote.
We include all these fees in our quotes
Also, make sure they include regional air in their quotes.
We include all these flights and even take on the risk of flight costs that are not yet published.

Make sure all costs related to activities are included in your quote. We include it in the cost or we make it clear that it’s optional and not included.
Many travel agents sell you with pictures of a beautiful safari lodge, but don’t explain the region and wildlife experience very well. A great example of this is in South Africa’s Greater Kruger area. Many beautiful lodges are located in this area, but they are not all open to the Kruger National Park itself. This means they are smaller private game reserves that are fenced off to the park.
Quality safaris are all about location, location, location!

Get ready to embark on a journey like no other

Vincent Vacations is a bespoke travel-planning agency that specializes in one-of-a-kind — and once-in-a-lifetime — journeys to Africa.

Our clients are seasoned world-travelers who are now ready to try something different … something truly life changing. They want to share the gift of unforgettable travel with the ones they love most — or they’re solo travelers eager to see the adventurous vacation they’ve always dreamed about come to life. And they turn to us to cut through the clutter; our expertise, demonstrated passion, and personalized approach make journeying to the most beautiful yet often most misunderstood continent on the globe a breeze. We’ve forged a personal relationship with one of the most trusted, award-winning Africa safari outfitters in the world — Micato Safaris — so that we bring you only the very best.

When you work with Vincent Vacations, you receive:

A Truly Personal Touch: Work one-on-one with a dedicated safari designer who listens to your travel desires and is proactive about your needs. Every trip is customized and crafted with care. In fact, our clients often tell us that by the time they leave for their trip, their travel advisor feels like family. We’re incredibly proud of that.

A World-Class Safari Experience: There are hundreds of safari outfitters out there … and we’ve vetted them all. Micato stood out from the pack, which is why we partner exclusively with this incredible familyowned company that delivers heart-stopping adventure coupled with refined luxury. We’re not the only ones singing Micato’s praises: they’re a nine-time Travel + Leisure “Best Safari Outfitter” winner. Worry-Free Travel: Even seasoned travelers are sometimes hesitant about traveling to Africa — but when you work with a trusted, experienced advisor, you don’t need to be. We’re here to answer all of your questions and provide personalized guidance on the Africa travel experience. Plus, we only work with suppliers we know well and make safety a top priority.

Our “Give Back” Guarantee: One of our biggest reasons for working exclusively with Micato is because of their “One for One Commitment.” For every Micato safari sold, they send one child to school … for their entire secondary years, 1st through 8th grade. We’re proud to partner with an organization with such a strong philanthropic spirit.

Plus, we’ve made a commitment to protect and preserve the wondrous, wild nature of Africa as well. Vincent Vacations promises to donate five percent of all earned commission evenly to these five outstanding wildlife conservation organizations: William Holden Wildlife Foundation, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya, East African Wildlife Society, and African Wildlife Foundation.

How can you work with Vincent Vacations?

From beginning to end, here’s what our travel planning process looks like:

1. We get to know each other on a complimentary planning consultation call. We’ll discuss your trip vision, unique needs, and the “nitty gritty” details like your budget, group size, and possible travel dates.

2. Is it a travel match meant to be? If it feels like a good fit, we’ll commit to working together and discuss the planning contract and associated planning fee (which varies based on trip logistics).

3. Now the fun part begins! We’ll put together a few incredible options for you based on your specific wants and needs. We’ll continue to refine the itinerary until it becomes the safari journey you’ve always dreamed of.

4. We take care of the entire booking process for you — and if you like, we’ll even use your frequent flyer miles and/or preferred hotel stay programs. We’ll also provide visa assistance, as well as recommendations for the best restaurants, shopping, and more.

5. Unparalleled support means we’re there for you every step of the journey — even after the plane takes off. Contact us at any time for travel assistance; we act as your travel advocate for truly worry-free travel. We’ll make sure everything goes smoothly, so all you have to do is savor the experience.

Ready to delve deep into the mystic lands of this awe-inducing continent? Schedule a complimentary consultation call so we can explore your safari dreams and desires together:

Our bespoke planning services and partnership with Micato Safaris gets you that dream safari escape that goes far beyond what you can even imagine.

About the owner, Lia Vincent:

From a trip in High School to Indonesia, I was inspired by travel. From small villages of Thailand to the dense jungle of Peru, I’ve been blessed to experience cultures radically different from my own, which has helped me appreciate the blessings of my own life with new eyes. I’ve never stopped traveling to the far corners of the globe. I have a voracious appetite for new experiences and love meeting new people.

Still … there was always a longing to return to Africa!

This is it, I thought. My passion — my purpose — and my chance to give back.

It was travel like I’ve never experienced it before. And I couldn’t wait to share it with others. Today, I work with travelers who yearn to go beyond the ordinary. They want to check off that “bucket list” trip to Africa, but they want to do it right. They want to delve deep into the culture, delight in the wild nature of the land, and leave this spellbinding place knowing they’ve made a difference to those who call it home.

Does this sound like you? Then get in touch — I know we can create travel magic together.

What You Need to Know for South African Safaris

Good to knows for South Africa

-Opposite seasons from us. Our summer is their winter which is a great time for safari but bring a coat and winter hat. It’s not super ideal for Cape Town. I think if they could pick the perfect time between the 2 would be September. Their summer has tons of bugs and biting flies on safari. Ahhhh.

-English is most spoken language and then Afrikaans

-Safaris include 2 game drives a day where you leave like 30 minutes before sunrise and then around 2 hours before sunset. They stop at sunrise for coffee/tea/hot chocolate. At sunset they stop for beer/wine/soda and snacks. They call this a “sundowner” Standard is 3 hours for each drive ans if goes by really fast. In the Bush (South Africa safaris with lots of trees ans foliage) there’s typically a tracker who sits on front of truck and guide who drives. Serengeti safaris like in Kenya don’t really need a tracker.

-Private game reserves are superior to doing places like Kruger National Park since there are limited trucks when it comes to an animal sighting. If there’s a sighting in Kruger then there can be 20-30 trucks all in a row waiting to see a lion or whatever. Most of the time it was just us seeing them or maybe 1 other truck. Sabi Sand (where we were but there are a lot) is a private game reserve with no fences to Kruger. The animals run freely thru the whole area. The private game reserves around Kruger call themselves “the Greater Kruger area”

-Cape Town feels very European to me. It’s safe to walk around. We stayed in V & A Waterfront and very walkable with aquarium, big Ferris wheel, playground, tons of great restaurants, mall, Food Market (like the Collective for all the Okies), craft market, and where the boat tours leave from. Winter is their rainy season. (Summer is rainy season for Kruger)

This is when flowers bloom, etc. Summer everything becomes brown in the heat.

-Wine Country - about 1 hour outside of Cape Town. There are a bunch of towns just like in California that make up their wine country. We loved Franschhoek. It was a settlement of the French and it’s still berry French. Upscale. Quiet. The town is fancy little shops and restaurants. This is where Richard Branson’s hotel Mont Rochelle (24 rooms total)is. It’s one of the stops for the wine tram but just stops at the restaurant down the hill from where the hotel portion is so it doesn’t disturb the hotel. Restaurant is called “Country Kitchen”. It has a big nice outdoor area for dining as well as outdoor games and playground for kids. This is a 5 star property.

Spier which is in Stellenbosch which is one of the bigger towns. This one is a huge property with a working farm & vineyard, convention space, birds of prey rescue, several dining options, kids club so parents can go on wine tours and leave the kids (3&up), tons of art and 150+ rooms. This one is a 4 star property. They had bicycles you can borrow to explore the property.

Such an epic family vacation. 🐆🐘🦒🐊🦓 I would love to help your family. We are booking now for this time next year and it’s already filling up. Best time to come to South Africa? May -> October. We are here during their winter. We have not seen a mosquito/very many bugs in general. It’s chilly in the morning but warms up to around 80 during the day. This is a bush safari with a tracker and a guide to really search for the animals. It really gives a thrill when you find them. (I always thought they would just be all hanging out in a field like on Lion King 🤦‍♀️😂) We have been here 3 nights and have seen all of the Big 5 plus some fun surprises like honey badgers, mongoose, chameleons and some of the prettiest birds ever.

Safari drives are sunrise and just before sunset. This is when the animals are the most active. Sunrise stops for coffee and hot chocolate. Sunset stops for a “sundowner” which has snacks, wine/beer or sodas. They asked the group their drink of choice so everyone is happy. The chef even packed a tin of chicken nuggets😂 for the kids. The kids are having a great time but it’s a little hard to not squeal (and scare everything around us) when we find one of the animals we are looking for. 🤪 Sabi Sand is pretty epic.

Best Time to Travel

The "Green Season" - Traveling to Africa During this Time

Everyone wants to know, "what is the best time of the year to visit Africa?". Most of the time, this would be the African winter months of June-September. But, it depends on what type of safari trip and experience you are after. Only interested in wildlife viewing while on safari? Then this is a great time to visit. Typically, the African winter months are dryer months, so vegetation is not as dense and you can see further into the bush. Water sources are more scare as the seasonal ponds, puddles and water holes dry up and wildlife is forced to congregate at the few permanent sources of water in the region like lakes, dams and rivers. Although, there are reasons why traveling in a season earlier in the year would make more sense.

Lower Cost - Some destinations charge seasonal rates for lodging. "Green Season" rates are substantially lower than high season rates and can account for overall significantly lower cost to visit some incredible destinations. This time period also often has special packages on offer and these depend on what camps or lodges ou will be visiting. It is not uncommon to see deals that include a free night when booking 3 night s at a a particular property. Single supplement charges are also often waived during these times.

Less Crowds - As these months are not necessarily the months advertised to the masses as "the best" months you will see a lot less people and vehicles in the safari regions of both Southern & East Africa. High season months attract large amounts of visitors and this can often cause one of the only negatives you will experience in Africa. If you want to avoid seeing a lot of people then put up with some afternoon showers, sometimes muddy conditions, a little more heat and more insects around and travel in the "Green Season".

Calving Season - In regular rainfall seasons (no drought), the " Green Season" sees the onset of the first rains which stimulates the growth of new grass. Many of the antelope species and other grazers would have timed their gestation periods to synchronize the birth of their young. This creates magical scenes and also creates many feeding opportunities for predators.

Birdlife - African summers attract an amazing array of migratory birdlife. These along with the permanent residents of the area creates some of the best birding experiences anywhere on the planet. The rains, warmth and insects create feeding frenzies for birdlife.

Longer Days and Warmer Mornings - This applies more specifically to Southern Africa (not completely relative in East Africa due to the proximity to the equator). Summer months provide more daylight hours which allows more time to view wildlife in the early mornings without having to struggle through "bitterly cold" morning game drives. Whilst you still want to be up early and get out on your drives before it gets too hot, these mornings are warmer and the morning light begins earlier, often allowing more time on your morning drive.

Less Dust and Lush Vegetation - Through the dry seeason as riverbeds, waterholes and roads are extremely dry the slightest breeze and especially other vehicles often cause a dusty haze in the air. Winteer fires can also often add to this haze by adding smoke. "Green Season" creates the absolute best of Africa's already dramatic and spectacular landscapes. Green grass, full flourishing trees and blooms. Brighter sunrises and if possible, even more spectacular sunsets.
