Making a Difference on International Literacy Day

You may or may not know that today the 8th September marks international literacy day, a day that’s aims to bring awareness to the importance of literacy and in particular those who are not fortunate enough to have obtained the skill. While many parents across the country will have waved their children off back to school this week, sadly in many parts of the world there are children who do not have access to a proper education and therefore never learn to read.

Fortunately, there are many charities and organisations who are working to ensure that every person around the world has access to an education that will provide them with skills such as literacy that will be invaluable when it comes to finding a job. One of these is our own Sandals Foundation, which works with local communities throughout the Caribbean to ensure educational needs are met.

The Sandals Foundation believes education at all levels provides the greatest opportunities for positive change for individuals and our nations throughout the Caribbean. Each year, we support thousands of students in educational facilities throughout the Caribbean community. The focus of the Sandals Foundation is ensuring as many children, youth and adults as possible have the educational opportunities they need to reach their full potential. Programs include community scholarships, adopted schools, book drives and literacy programs, and support of new libraries and computer facilities.

From providing 50 scholarships to students most recently, to distributing 25,000 brand new children’s books throughout the islands which house Sandals resorts with Scholastic Book Fairs, there are so many schemes in place to ensure children in the Caribbean have the best possible chance at getting a good education. If you’re interested in a more hands on experience, our Reading Road Trip could be just the scheme to get involved in. On the Reading Road Trip you’ll have the chance to visit a local school and be paired with a small group of children for a morning of ‘edu-tainment’ focused on improving their reading, listening, and comprehension skills. This is sure to be a valuable and memorable for both volunteers and children alike.
