Pendleton is a quaint town settled on the Umatilla River in the sprawling landscape of Eastern Oregon. Learn about the history of Pendleton at the Heritage Station Museum or the Tamstlikt Cultural Institute, where the history of the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla Native tribes are explored. In Pendleton's picturesque historic district, tour old Pendleton - the Empire Building (1907), Hendricks Building (1897) and the Empire Meat Company from 1895. Pendleton is known for its woolen manufacturing, and you can get a first hand look at the Pendleton Mills. Nearby, explore the Umatilla National Forest or the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

September brings the well-known Pendleton Round-Up to this community 210 mi/340 km east of Portland, which once was a stop on the Oregon Trail. Even if you don't make it to the rodeo itself, you can learn about its biggest stars at the Round-Up Hall of Fame.
Other sights in town include the Pendleton Woolen Mills, the Umatilla County Historical Society's Heritage Station Museum, and Pendleton Underground Tours, which traverse subterranean tunnels. Dug in the 1800s, these tunnels were home to thousands of Chinese laborers who toiled to build the railroad.
The Tamastslikt Cultural Institute—6 mi/10 km east of town, near the route of the old Oregon Trail—relates the history of the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla tribes. It's affiliated with the Wildhorse Resort and Casino, which has a hotel, a golf course and a shop selling Native American art.
Pendleton and a portion of surrounding Pickens County, located 135 mi/215 km northwest of Columbia, make up one of the largest national historic districts in the U.S. It features a restored town square, many beautiful old homes and the Agricultural Museum of South Carolina. You can walk or drive to tour the historic buildings. Have lunch at the Farmers Society Hall, where southern specialties attract food fans from all over.
The Ashtabula and Woodburn plantations are two of the most exquisitely restored plantation homes in the area. Call first before visiting, as one or both may be open on different days of the week according to time of year.
Just 2 mi/3 km northwest of Pendleton is Clemson, home to the university of the same name and to the official state Botanical Garden, which has beautiful azalea and camellia trails. On Clemson's campus, visit the Federal-style home of John C. Calhoun, the South Carolina statesman.
From Clemson, you can drive on to Lake Keowee, a popular recreation area. Farther north, in Walhalla, is Issaqueena Falls, a 200-ft/61-m cascade.
