Introduction

One of the Balearic Islands, Menorca (sometimes written as Minorca) has fabulous sandy beaches (often at the end of long, bumpy lanes) and a relaxed atmosphere. Unlike Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca has escaped the worst of mass tourism and continues to be a relatively low-key destination—it's the last of the Balearics to choose if you're looking for a party spot, but it's a great place to rest and relax. Cruise passengers generally arrive at Mahon, from which the main excursion is to Ciudadela, on the opposite (western) side of the island. This white gem of a town, with its Arabic influences, was the island capital until the British occupation of Menorca in the 18th century. It has a fine inlet (narrower and smaller than Mahon's), elegant mansions, tiny plazas and a wealth of inviting cafes and restaurants.
