This tropical city of over two million people spreads out along the banks of chocolate-colored Guayas River, about 12 miles from Gulf of Guayaquil. The river, navigable for the largest of ocean vessels, makes this one of the Pacific's most important and best-protected ports. Visitors find the city itself is primarily valued as a gateway for the Galapagos Island and the rest of the country. Ecuador's scenic capital Quito can be reached via a 45-minute flight from Guayaquil. Lush green hillsides, snow-capped volcano cones and brilliant sunshine combine to make the city a charming surprise. Guayaquil offers a rich and interesting history. The meeting of Bolivar and San Martin is commemorated with the colonnaded La Rotunda facing the river. Other attractions include Colon Park where the city was founded, the Santo Domingo Church and the cemetery, often called the White City. With its elaborate tombs and monuments, this is one of South America's most striking burial grounds.

Overview

Introduction

Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and seaport on the country's Pacific coast. Previously considered an unattractive, smelly city and excluded from most tourist itineraries, Guayaquil has received an impressive face-lift from past municipal administrations.

In addition to a series of public works, the Malecon 2000 is a safe, pleasant and impressive 2 mi/3 km promenade along the banks of the Guayas River offering a variety of gardens, restaurants, recreational areas, monuments, shops, museums and an IMAX cinema. Live concerts and theatrical events are offered frequently May-October.

Although Guayaquil is the economic capital of Ecuador, there is glaring poverty in many sections of the city, in contrast to the modern buildings and luxurious gated neighborhoods. Nevertheless, with its Caribbean flavor, Guayaquil is upbeat and intent on developing its potential as a major tourist attraction.

Location

Guayaquil Port is situated on the Guayas River, a good distance upstream from the open sea. This is the second largest cargo port along the western coast of South America; it looks the part of a working pier and has little to offer in terms of passenger services. While some cruise ships arrive there, more are making the stop in Manta up the coast. Nevertheless, the port is conveniently situated about 20 minutes from downtown Guayaquil.

Shore Excursions

Typical excursions include city tours to take in the markets and museums of Guayaquil, or out to the countryside to visit an authentic hacienda. Other specific interest tours include visits to Panama hat showrooms where one can see the iconic headwear being made, or to a tropical flower farm.
