Located 12 mi/19 km north of Philadelphia, Chestnut Hill was once the vacation spot of choice for colonial Philadelphians. Today visitors go there to stroll the cobblestoned streets dusted with more than 100 shops and the Morris Arboretum, where literally thousands of plants and Delaware Valley trees can be seen.
About 2 mi/3 km down the road in Germantown is the Wyck Historic House and Garden, a home and farm building with the original furnishings from a Quaker family who came to North America with William Penn in 1687.
Other historical stops include Upsala, a historic mansion where the Revolutionary Army camped during the Battle of Germantown; Johnson House, a museum that was part of the Underground Railroad; and Rittenhouse Town, a preserved 18th-century industrial village and the site of America's first paper mill.
