These twin towns 165 mi/265 km northwest of St. John's grew large (in Newfoundland and Labrador terms) because of the paper mill built in 1905. The amalgamated town is located in the Exploits Valley, which offers outdoor adventures such as hunting, fishing and boating.
Fish, in particular, have much to do with one favorite area attraction. The Salmonid Interpretation Centre on the Exploits River is worth a visit for its displays on Atlantic salmon.
The Exploits Valley Salmon Festival is held for five days annually, during the third week in July, and is the largest outdoor celebration in Newfoundland and Labrador. Expect fine music, tasty salmon and a lot of dancing. You should also take time to see the Mary March Regional Museum, which focuses on the different peoples who have lived in Newfoundland and Labrador, including the Beothuk. Behind the museum is a replica of a Beothuk village.
Windsor, England, a pleasant town along the Thames 20 mi/30 km west of London, is home to Windsor Castle, the most accessible of all the royal properties. The castle's highlights include St. George's Chapel, Albert Memorial Chapel, Queen Mary's Dolls' House and the state apartments. A formal garden—the first in more than 100 years—opened in 2002 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's 50 years on the throne.
The vast Windsor Great Park, which stretches south from the castle, is a fine setting for a walk. Sir Christopher Wren lived there, and you can dine or stay in his house, which is now a small hotel.
If you're traveling with children, Legoland Windsor offers a change of pace from all the history.
Just across the Thames is famous Eton College (a boarding school), noted for educating royals and statesmen. It's open to the public for tours.
Lying across the river from Detroit, Michigan, Windsor is a hub of manufacturing and international trade and also makes a convenient entrance point into Ontario for some U.S. citizens. Windsor is 230 mi/370 km southwest of Toronto.
The main attraction that draws visitors to Windsor is Caesars Windsor casino, which does booming business with its slots and gaming tables. The waterfront is also a draw: The International Peace Fountain floats in the Detroit River, and the promenade at Dieppe Gardens is a good place to view the Detroit skyline. River cruises depart from the gardens.
Other Windsor attractions include Jackson Park (fantastic summer rose gardens), the Hiram Walker Distillery Tour (home of Canadian Club whiskey) and the Art Gallery of Windsor.
