This 30-mi-/50-km-long island is home to Vanuatu's largest population of people still living in the traditional way. It's also home to one of the country's biggest attractions, an active volcano named Yasur. It's possible to take a day tour from Efate to see Yasur, but we suggest you stay overnight in the area to see the volcano when it is at its most dramatic. Seeing red lava shoot into the night sky (and feeling the subsequent shock waves) is something you won't forget. The volcano is easy to get to—a road leads almost to the summit. The island also has impressive waterfalls and rain forests.
The biggest annoyance on the island is the horde of overly aggressive tour guides who harass independent travelers. We do, however, recommend tours to the many traditional villages (the Tannese don't like outsiders wandering uninvited into their villages). Tradition is strong on Tanna, and guides can help visitors avoid breaking the rules—and often a guide provides the only access to certain ceremonies and events you might want to see. 150 mi/240 km south of Efate.
