The old part of Lincoln, situated on a low hill above the modern town, provides what most travelers are looking for in England—cobblestoned streets, old shops, a castle (which incorporates some ancient Roman walls—Newport Gate is the most interesting) and a spectacular three-tower cathedral dramatically set on a ridge above town. Lincoln is 120 mi/190 km north of London.
Time permitting, excursions can be made to Woodhall Spa (beautiful birch and pine forests); Gainsborough (grand medieval Old House but not much else); or the low hills, known as the Wolds, 12 mi/20 km east.
Lincoln, Nebraska, is primarily known as the state's capital city and the home of the University of Nebraska's flagship campus, but the city—set in the southeast corner of the state—has numerous worthwhile attractions for visitors.
If time is not an issue, there are several notable buildings, including the Capitol, the Governor's Mansion and the Kennard House. Lincoln also has a number of museums.
The Haymarket area of Lincoln is a restored warehouse district, full of energy, with plenty of dining and shopping opportunities.
Those interested in outdoor recreation should check out the Wilderness Park Hiking Trail, a 13-mi/21-km trail along Salt Creek that passes through heavily wooded areas, meadows and creek beds rich with wildlife and wildflowers. Also, within a 25-mi/40-km radius of Lincoln are many lakes and other recreation areas.
Among the notable events on Lincoln's calendar are Haymarket Heydays (food vendors and entertainment in the city's historic district—mid-June); and the Star City Holiday Parade and Weekend Festival (first Saturday in December).
Lincoln, New Mexico, located 135 mi/215 km southeast of Albuquerque, owes its fame to Henry McCarty, better known as William Bonney and best known as Billy the Kid. It was in this frontier town in April 1881 that the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Court House, killing two deputies. Today, more than half of the buildings that existed in Billy's day still stand.
If you plan to visit, be sure to book ahead: The eight-room Wortley Hotel and the bed-and-breakfast Casa de Patron are the only places to stay, and the Wortley is the only public place to eat. Space is especially tight when the town hosts the annual Last Escape of Billy the Kid Pageant the first weekend in August. Activities include a parade, arts-and-crafts exhibits and a re-enactment of the outlaw's famous escape.
