Overview
Introduction
Killarney has been marketing itself as Ireland's principal tourist destination for much longer than anyone can remember, and with some justification. It is surrounded by outstanding scenery, has an interesting history and is ideally situated as a base for exploring The Ring of Kerry, The Dingle Peninsula, Valencia Island and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Skellig Michael. Because of all this, Killarney gets very busy in the summer months; you may want to time your visit for spring or fall, and it's an easy drive of about 84 mi/135 km from Shannon Airport.
Killarney sits north of a range of mountains called the MacGillicuddy Reeks (the Black Stacks), which contain the highest mountains in the country and make up part of Killarney National Park.
