Although best known as the site of a large U.S. Marine Corps base and Naval Air Station, Kaneohe, Hawaii, has other attractions, including the largest sheltered bay in the Hawaiian Islands. It's dotted with small picturesque islands, two marinas and a yacht club.
The 200-acre/80-hectare Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens introduces visitors to another, more peaceful side of Oahu. Wander on unkempt, grassy trails through this beautiful arboretum and botanical garden off Oahu's circle-island highway on the Windward Coast.
The Valley of the Temples includes the Byodo-In, a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan. More than 10,000 carp live in a 2-acre/1-hectare reflecting pool, and wild peacocks stroll the grounds.
Windsurfers travel from all corners of the world to test their mettle at Kailua Beach Park. Watch them flaunt their skills on a windy day or enjoy a dip in this beautiful beach's warm waters and gentle surf. Barbecue facilities, bathrooms and showers are available.
Off the coast is Mokoli'i Island, or "Chinaman's Hat," a small islet beloved by seabirds. Although you may hear it's possible to wade or swim out to Mokoli'i, please don't: The current can be dangerous (several people have been swept away), plus the reef gets damaged. Enjoy the view from Kualoa Regional Park and snap some photos.
