Overview
Introduction
The birthplace of Hercules, King Midas, the Minotaur and countless other legends, Heraklion, the capital of Crete, retains the magic of its ancient roots while embracing modernity, reconciling both into a busy, cosmopolitan city.
Many visitors go to the island with the sole purpose of visiting the ruins of Knossos Palace, which is located right outside the city, but there are also large beaches (Amoudara and Paliokastro are among the best) and charming shopping.
Location
Cruise-ship passengers visiting Heraklion have the luxury of docking close to the heart of the city, only a short walk from most of the major attractions.
The city offers free shuttles from the ship to the passenger terminal, where there are tourist information stands—the layout of the streets can be slightly confusing so it's recommended that you pick up a map.
