Hamilton, Bermuda's capital, is a charming, small city of pastel houses with whitewashed roofs and attractive shops. Block after block of stores and restaurants line Front Street, across from the harbor.
Wigged and robed members of the House of Assembly, occasionally seen walking outdoors, meet at the Sessions House on Friday to hold intense yet polite debates. Directly to the south is the Cabinet Building, where the Senate meets on Wednesday and where the office of the premier is located. The Cabinet meets there every Tuesday.
One of the most photographed spots in town is the Birdcage, an elevated, enclosed perch at Front and Queen streets in which a Bermuda-shorts-clad police officer sometimes directs traffic. One block north from the Birdcage on Queen Street is the Perot Post Office, another landmark from the 19th century. Take time to enjoy Queen Elizabeth Park, once the private garden of postmaster William Perot.
Other sites to see include: Bermuda National Gallery, Bermuda Historical Society Museum, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Fort Hamilton, the Bermuda Botanical Gardens and Verdmont Museum.
Located 70 mi/115 km south of Auckland, in the heart of New Zealand's dairy farming and racehorse breeding industries, Hamilton is home to the Waikato Museum and Art Gallery, which features a good collection of Maori art, and Hamilton Gardens, 100 different gardens, each with its own theme, including a traditional Maori garden. The city's zoo boasts a large walk-through aviary and includes some of New Zealand's rarest indigenous species. You can unwind under the trees beside the mighty Waikato River.
Ngaruawahia, the country's Maori capital, lies just northwest of Hamilton. There you can visit King Tuheitia Paki's residence and a Maori cultural complex.
Hamilton, Ontario, sits on the Niagara Escarpment, a distinct vertical cliff that separates the upper and lower city. Known as "the mountain," this cliff is the city's defining feature. Streets continue from the bottom of the mountain to the top, with the prefix of "upper" added to streets on the mountain.
On the mountain, you can find spectacular views of the city and harbor. Although only certain streets stretch to the top of the mountain, you can park your car and hike upward. Lower Hamilton is home to Dofasco, a giant steel manufacturer.
Home of the famous Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons, Hamilton, located 45 mi/60 km west of Toronto, is also a thriving cultural metropolis with no shortage of activities. Orchestra, choirs, ballet, theater—they're all there and well supported by a strong arts community.
Although considerably milder in temperature than most of Ontario, Hamilton is subject to harsh storms and changeable weather patterns. The upper city is generally hotter and more humid in the summer and susceptible to snow squalls in the winter.
Hamilton Island is located off Airlie Beach on the Queensland coast and is one of the 74 Whitsunday Islands. The island has some 1,200 residents, some of whom are retirees. Commercial vehicles are not permitted on the island, and most guests walk, or are ferried around by golf buggies or personal buggy hire.
It is the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with a substantive commercial jet airport, and it is reachable with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. Hamilton can also be reached by boat. Resorts on the surrounding islands also use Hamilton Island as a gateway airport and then transfer their guests via boat to their accommodation.
Despite its small size—the island is only 2 sq mi/5 sq km—it is one of the most developed on the reef and visitors are drawn there by a wide range of activities—including a marine village, restaurants, cafes, bars and watersports—a variety of accommodation types, a unique culture and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. In addition to underwater attractions, there is a nature park on nearby Dent with emus, koalas and kangaroos.
The island comes to life in August with Hamilton Island Race Week when some 250 yachts descend on the surrounding waters for a series of yacht races. Other sporting events include triathlon and marathon races.
A championship golf course, golf club (on Dent Island) and yacht club, with villas available as rental properties, gave the island an additional boost in tourism, and its year-round good weather makes it a popular vacation spot for Australian travelers. It is an excellent family destination. http://www.hamiltonisland.com.au.
