Corner Brook is Newfoundland and Labrador's second-largest city. It's at the mouth of the Humber River, about 250 mi/400 km northwest of St. John's.
Be sure to see the Captain James Cook Monument National Historic Site, which commemorates the great explorer's charting of the area (there's a monument to Cook at the head of the bay). Also worth a visit is the Sir Richard Squires Building and Government Center, an impressive structure with a glass fountain from the Czechoslovakian Pavilion at Montreal's Expo '67, a library and an Internet cafe.
Take some time to shop for traditional and locally made crafts (carvings, pottery and fishermen's sweaters) at the Newfoundland Emporium and the Corner Brook Tourist Chalet and Crafts Centre. You can also visit the Games Centre, which was built for the 1999 Canada Games; the Hockey Hall of Fame located there highlights many interesting tidbits from Canada's national game.
The Humber River around Corner Brook is a good place to fish for salmon. If you can, find time to drive out Route 450 to Blow Me Down Provincial Park, near the mouth of the Humber, for its good hiking trails. Just east of Corner Brook is Marble Mountain ski area. Its average 16 ft/5 m of snow each winter is put to good use on 27 downhill runs. There are also trails for cross-country skiing and a comfortable chalet.
