Camden, Maine, a seaside town 85 mi/135 km northeast of Portland, has everything the perfect New England seaside town is supposed to have: 19th-century architecture that is home to a wide variety of shops, galleries and restaurants; and a harbor that is busy with graceful sailboats, sleek yachts and seaworthy fishing boats.
Go in the fall to see the entire town embraced by peak foliage. Architecture enthusiasts will love the varied offerings throughout town, from sturdy Georgian houses to flamboyant Victorians. The harbor is home to some of Maine's beloved windjammer fleet—a day or overnight aboard one of these graceful, aged beauties is a grand way to see the coast.
In December, the town celebrates Christmas by the Sea with music, entertainment, a parade, shopping and holiday festivities.
This city on the Delaware River, just across the water from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has long had a reputation for slums and decay, but it offers several reasons to visit, especially with children. Adventure Aquarium has the largest seal exhibit in the country, and its Ocean Base Atlantic—a 760,000-gallon/2,876,913 liter tank—is brimming with sea turtles, sharks, stingrays and more. The Camden Children's Garden offers train rides past miniature landscapes and a chance to dig for dinosaur bones in the Dinosaur Garden. You can also tour the Battleship New Jersey Memorial and Museum; it's the most-decorated ship in the U.S. The BB&T Pavilion, not far from the aquarium, is an indoor/outdoor concert facility that draws many big-name performers.
Another worthwhile stop is the Walt Whitman House the poet's last residence, where his books, photographs and letters are on display. Whitman is buried in Camden's Harleigh Cemetery. Also see Pomona Hall, considered one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the U.S. Tours of the house illustrate what life was like there in the 18th century.
If time allows, set sail across the Delaware on the RiverLink ferry to Penn's Landing in Philadelphia, where William Penn first stepped ashore in 1682: It's a great place to enjoy waterfront dining and nightlife. Camden is 70 mi/113 km southwest of Newark.
During the Revolutionary War, Camden, South Carolina, saw more than a dozen battles. The peace has long since been restored—the thundering hooves you hear in the area come not from the cavalry but from the polo field.
Located 35 mi/55 km northeast of Columbia, Camden is an equestrian's playground, with facilities not only for polo but also steeplechases and flat races, as well as miles/kilometers of bridle paths through the countryside. The Carolina Cup and the Colonial Cup steeplechase events are held in March and November, respectively.
The war for independence is far from forgotten, however. At the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site, a 107-acre/43-hectare site, British fortifications of the time have been restored, as has a collection of 18th- and 19th-century houses. A monument to Revolutionary War hero Baron de Kalb stands in front of the historic Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
