Primarily a port, rather than a tourist town, Ancona lies on the Adriatic Coast of Italy. The historic town sits on a hill and commands a charming sea view.
Sites are of interest include the art gallery and an archaeological museum.
One of the most important departure points for Slovania, Greece, Yugoslavia, Croatia and Turkey, Ancona is served by several ferry companies. Ferries leave from Stazione Marittima, which is reachable by car, train, bus and taxi. Ancona Falconara Airport is located 11 mi/18 km from the city center, reachable by bus and taxi from the ferry terminal.
The Ancona ferry terminal is 1 mi/2 km from the town. The rail station in Ancona is directly connected to the ferry terminal by bus Linea (Line) 12 leaving from the piazza opposite the train station.
If you have an hour or two to kill before the ferry, head to the old town of Ancona, up the hill from the water, to stroll the elegant pedestrian Garibaldi and Mazzini boulevards.
Or, if you have more time, take a side trip to the beautiful beachfront town of Pesaro (about 45 minutes north by train). The town has a winding pedestrian zone against a backdrop of scenic, gentle hills. The town hosts an Opera Festival each summer in honor of its most famous son, Pesaro.
