Located in the far northeastern corner of Florida at the border with Georgia, 155 mi/250 km north of Orlando, Amelia Island was one of the state's first resorts, drawing visitors back in the 1800s. History

Starting with the native Timucua Indians, the island has been ruled at various times by France, Spain, Britain and Mexico. History is brought to life by the docents of the Amelia Island Museum of History, who explain how each of the "ruling" nations had an impact on the island.

A key part of the island's history can be seen at its northern tip, where Fort Clinch holds sway. Built starting in 1847, it served as a military post during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I. If timing works out, it's fun for families to be there when locals dress up in full costumes and regalia to re-enact history.
