4. It's the hummingbird capital of the world! There are over 50 species that call Costa Rica home.

Some of the top activities Costa Rica has to offer...
You want to visit Costa Rica! Awesome, we can help get you there. But one of the questions we’ll ask in helping you do so is what you’d like to see and do there. Relax? Explore nature? Seek adventure? All the above and more? Probably. There is just so much available, we’ll need to have a serious discussion on what your priorities are. To help we’ve put together a list of eight of the best activities to do during your visit. After reading let us know what’s on the top of yours!
8 Great Activities Costa Rica Has To Offer
1. Hiking – An activity that likely is top of mind when you think of Costa Rica and there certainly is no shortage of places to do so. Volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests – the choice is yours. Once that’s settled, think about the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with. These two things will help in the best recommendation. Additionally, it is suggested you consider guided hikes. Your expert leader will be able to provide general assistance and a trained eye to spot wildlife.
2. Surfing – Surfers from around the world frequent Costa Rica year-round because of its warm waters and waves. Choose your coast – Pacific or Caribbean, select your level of experience – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. We can even make some recommendations. If you’re in need of a lesson, they’re typically easy to find, even just by stepping foot on some beaches!
3. Snorkeling and Scuba – Wildlife sightings aren’t limited to land. There are 7,000+ marine species that can be found in Costa Rica’s surrounding waters. So, it is no surprise that it is on the top of the list for water activities. If you’re a snorkeler, think about if you’d like to do so by boat or shore. If a diver, we can help recommend dive sites. Just let us know your level of experience.
4. Whitewater Rafting – Costa Rica provides a stunning background for this adventure. There are a few areas that would be recommended if this is something you’d like to do. Beginner or advanced, let us know what intensity of rapids you’re comfortable with, and we can point you in the right direction. If the kiddos are up for the challenge, there are some options that are suitable for them too. It’s a great family activity!
5. Visit Waterfalls – Some of the most picturesque sights in Costa Rica can be found at its numerous waterfalls. After all, there’s something so magical about water cascading over a cliff to the pools below. There are plenty of options to choose from, just keep in mind a few things. Some falls will require a hike to access, entrance fees will vary, and some allow swimming while others do not. Also consider a guided tour if you won’t have access to a rental car during your stay.
6. Zip Lining – If you’ve Googled “excursions in Costa Rica” you’ve likely seen a picture of someone effortlessly flying over green canopy, rivers, and cliffs. It’s a very popular activity that can be found all over the country. You should expect a safety demo and a short hike. Then you’ll glide line by line, each getting a little longer than the one before. If you’re an adrenaline seeker this is a must do! If not, we wouldn’t recommend it. Do not invest money in something if you’re not 100% comfortable with.
7. Bird Watching – It isn’t unusual for people to travel to Costa Rica for this very reason. Some enthusiasts even build a whole itinerary around this activity. There is 900+ species and most often seen will likely be toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds. Because the country is so eco-diverse, make a couple of watching stops. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
8. Yoga – Yes, you read that right! Costa Rica is indeed a haven for yoga lovers. You could see or take a class quite literally anywhere – a resort, beach, volcano, or rainforest. If you’re a beginner, give it a try at least once. If you’re a wellness enthusiast and it’s your reason for travel, it belongs on your list. Think wellness retreat, group trip for your studio, location for instructor training or continuing education.
There you have it, some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer! Of course, there’s a ton more that isn’t listed, so if you have any questions let us know. If you’re ready to explore all that Costa Rica has to offer, please feel free to reach out!

If you’re dreaming about Europe but unsure how to experience it, you’re not alone. One of the very first questions I ask my clients when we start planning is:
“Are you interested in a guided tour of Europe, or do you want to travel independently?”
Want to know what almost everyone says at first?
Independent travel.
And that makes total sense - it sounds flexible, adventurous, and romantic. But here’s what’s interesting: once I walk them through what expertly guided tours actually look like today (and what they don’t look like), a surprising number of travelers change their minds.
Even more telling? Many of those travelers come home saying, “I’m so glad we chose a guided tour - I had no idea how much easier it would be and how much we would learn that we would never have if we did it on our own.” As a travel advisor, my personal favorites are Globus Family of Brands and CIE Tours.
While both guided tours and independent travel can be incredible, they offer very different experiences. Understanding those differences - especially in Europe - can help you choose the option that truly fits your comfort level, travel goals, and timeline.
As a travel advisor who plans European trips every day, my job isn’t to push one style over the other - it’s to help you travel smarter and easier, with fewer headaches and more meaningful experiences.
Let’s break it down.
What Is a Guided Tour in Europe (with companies like Globus Family of Brands and CIE Tours)? (simple answer)
Yes, guided tours involve a bus - but Modern guided tours are nothing like the rigid tours that only your great great grandma would imagine taking — today’s experiences are often small-group, expertly led, thoughtfully paced, and designed to balance structure with personal time.
What Is Independent Travel in Europe? (simple answer)
Independent travel might be better for travelers who want to navigate Europe including all it's complex logistics. However, it also requires more time, research, and on-the-ground problem solving than many travelers expect, particularly when visiting multiple countries or traveling for the first time.
Guided Tour vs Independent Travel: Key Differences
1. Planning & Logistics
Let's start with Guided Tours
--Itinerary is professionally pre-planned --Transportation between cities is arranged --Hotels, sightseeing, and timing are coordinated --Minimal decision-making once you arrive
Next up - Independent Travel
--You research, book, and organize everything --You’re responsible for schedules, tickets, and connections --You manage changes, delays, or missed plans
👉 This is one of the biggest reasons travelers ultimately choose guided tours — especially once they realize how complex multi-city European itineraries can be.
Europe may look easy on a map, but coordinating trains, hotels, sightseeing reservations, and local transportation across different countries can quickly become overwhelming.
2. Pace & Structure
Let's start with Guided Tours --Thoughtfully structured daily schedules --Efficient sightseeing without wasted time --Routes designed to make geographic sense
Next up - Independent Travel --Fully flexible pace --Ability to linger longer in favorite places --Greater risk of inefficiencies or missed highlights
This is especially common in Europe, where timed entry tickets, advance reservations, and local logistics can make or break a day.
Many travelers are surprised by how much they actually see on a guided tour — without feeling rushed.
3. Access to Local Expertise
Let's start with Guided Tours --Licensed local guides --Historical, cultural, and regional insight --Skip-the-line access to major attractions
Next up - Independent Travel --Self-guided research --Reliance on guidebooks, blogs, or apps --Less cultural context and deeper storytelling
For many travelers, this local expertise is what transforms a “nice trip” into a truly unforgettable one.
4. Cost Transparency
Let's start with Guided Tours --One upfront price --Hotels, transportation, and excursions included --Easier budgeting with fewer surprises
Next up - Independent Travel --Costs vary based on choices --Expenses add up across hotels, trains, tours, and transfers --Budget requires closer monitoring
For many travelers, guided tours actually end up costing less than independent travel once everything is added together — and the value is much clearer from the start.
5. Stress Level
Let's start with Guided Tours --Low-stress travel experience --On-the-ground support if something goes wrong --Ideal for travelers who want ease and confidence
Independent Travel --Can be deeply rewarding --Requires problem-solving on the fly --Better suited for experienced travelers who enjoy managing details as part of the adventure
Europe is far more enjoyable when you’re focused on the experience — not troubleshooting logistics.
Why Guided Tours Often Make Sense for Europe
Europe is one of the most rewarding places in the world to visit — but it’s also one of the most logistically complex.
Different languages, transportation systems, currencies, and cultural norms can make even simple travel days feel stressful.
Guided tours work exceptionally well in Europe because they: --Move efficiently between destinations --Provide meaningful cultural and historical insight --Eliminate common planning mistakes --Allow travelers to be fully present in the experience
For travelers short on time, visiting multiple countries, or traveling internationally for the first time, guided touring often delivers the most value with the least stress.
Final Thoughts: There’s No “Wrong” Way to Travel Europe
There’s no wrong way to travel Europe — but there is a smarter way for many travelers.
Independent travel can be wonderful, and I plan many custom independent European itineraries. But guided tours often surprise travelers with just how seamless, immersive, and enjoyable they are once they experience Europe without worrying about logistics.
The best trips aren’t about checking boxes — they’re about traveling in a way that lets you be fully present.
And that’s exactly where expert planning makes all the difference.
Frequently Asked Questions About Guided Tours vs Independent Travel in Europe
Is a guided tour of Europe worth it?
Yes. For many travelers, guided tours in Europe are absolutely worth it. They include hotels, transportation, sightseeing, and expert local guides, helping travelers experience more while reducing stress — especially when visiting multiple destinations.
Are guided tours in Europe too rigid or rushed?
Not anymore. Modern guided tours often feature smaller group sizes, built-in free time, and thoughtful pacing. Many travelers are surprised by how balanced and flexible today’s guided tours feel.
Is independent travel cheaper than a guided tour in Europe?
Not always. While independent travel can be less expensive, guided tours often provide better overall value once hotels, transportation, tours, and transfers are added together — with clearer upfront pricing.
Can I combine a guided tour with independent travel?
Absolutely. Many travelers choose a guided tour for part of their trip and add independent time before or after. This hybrid approach offers structure where it helps most and flexibility where it matters. I plan this type of trip OFTEN.
Are guided tours good for first-time travelers to Europe?
Yes. Guided tours are especially ideal for first-time Europe travelers because they remove logistical challenges, provide expert guidance, and build confidence navigating unfamiliar destinations.
Do guided tours include free time?
Most modern guided tours include free time in each destination. Travelers typically have afternoons or evenings to explore independently, dine on their own, or relax.
Ready to Plan Your European Adventure?
Whether you’re leaning toward a guided tour, independent travel, or a thoughtful combination of both, the key to a great European trip is choosing the right approach for you.
As a travel advisor who specializes in European travel, I help travelers:
Compare guided tours vs independent itineraries
Select the best tour companies and routes
Avoid common planning mistakes
Design European vacations that feel effortless — not overwhelming
If you’re dreaming about Europe but aren’t sure which travel style makes the most sense, I’d love to help you explore your options and plan a trip that truly fits your travel goals.
For many first-time visitors to Europe, one big question comes up quickly:
Should I book a guided tour or plan everything myself?
The truth? Guided tours, like Globus Family of Brands and CIE Tours, can be an incredibly smart, confidence-building way to experience Europe for the first time — especially when you want to see multiple destinations without feeling overwhelmed.
Here’s why.
1. Everything Is Seamlessly Handled
One of the biggest advantages of guided touring is how effortless the experience feels.
Most guided tours include:
Hotels
Transportation between cities
Sightseeing and entrance fees
Professional local guides
Some meals
Instead of managing dozens of moving parts yourself, everything is coordinated for you — allowing you to focus on enjoying Europe rather than organizing it and constantly worrying about all the details.
For first-time travelers especially, this creates a smooth and stress-free introduction to international travel.
2. You Experience More in Less Time
Many first-time Europe trips include multiple bucket-list destinations like:
Rome
Paris
Prague
Guided tours are strategically designed to:
Maximize sightseeing time
Minimize transit confusion
Optimize travel routes
Balance activity with downtime
You’ll see iconic highlights efficiently — without spending valuable vacation hours figuring out logistics.
3. You Understand What You’re Seeing
Europe is layered with history, culture, architecture, and local traditions.
Professional guides bring destinations to life through:
Historical context
Cultural insight
Local stories
Expert commentary
Instead of simply visiting landmarks, you gain deeper understanding — which makes your first Europe trip far more meaningful.
4. You Travel with Confidence
International travel can feel like a big leap the first time.
Guided tours provide built-in reassurance:
Clear daily structure
On-the-ground support
Organized transfers
Experienced leadership
This added confidence is especially valuable for:
First-time international travelers
Solo travelers
Travelers navigating multiple countries
Anyone wanting a smooth first experience in Europe
5. Budgeting Is Simple and Transparent
Guided tours offer upfront pricing that includes major trip components.
That makes it easier to:
Plan accurately
Avoid unexpected expenses
Compare total trip costs clearly
When you factor in hotels, transportation, tours, and transfers, guided touring can offer exceptional value — particularly for multi-country itineraries.
Who Benefits Most from Guided Tours?
Guided tours are especially ideal if you:
Are visiting Europe for the first time
Want to see multiple countries in one trip
Have limited vacation time
Prefer organized, low-stress travel
Want expert insight along the way
For many travelers, a guided tour is the perfect introduction to Europe — followed by more independent travel on future trips once confidence grows.
Final Verdict: Are Guided Tours in Europe Worth It?
In my expert opinion, for first-time travelers, guided tours are a genius idea, because they offer:
Confidence
Convenience
Education
Efficiency
Excellent value
They remove complexity while maximizing experience.
And when chosen strategically, guided tours can be thoughtfully matched to your travel style — whether you prefer small groups, cultural depth, or a balanced pace.
Planning Your First Europe Trip?
Choosing the right guided tour — or deciding whether a tour is right for you — is where expert guidance makes all the difference.
As a Europe travel planning specialist, I help first-time travelers:
Select the right guided tour company
Customize pre- and post-tour extensions
Compare guided vs independent options
Design seamless multi-country itineraries
If you want clarity and confidence before booking, let’s plan your Europe trip the smart way together.

Are guided tours more expensive than planning independently?
Not necessarily. When you calculate hotels, transportation, guided sightseeing, and transfers, guided tours often provide competitive — and sometimes better — overall value.
Do guided tours allow free time?
Most modern tours include built-in free time for independent exploration, dining, and personal experiences.
How do I choose the right Europe guided tour?
The right tour depends on your travel style, pace preferences, destinations, and budget. Working with a Europe travel expert helps ensure you choose a tour that aligns with your goals.
When I recommend Scenic River Cruises, I often hear the same reaction from clients: “I’ve never heard of that brand — why would I choose it over one I already know?”
After sailing with Scenic on the Danube, I can confidently say this: what Scenic includes isn’t just about luxury — it shapes how the entire river cruise experience feels. There’s a noticeable difference between “going on a river cruise” and sailing on a truly all-inclusive river cruise, and once you’re onboard, that difference matters every single day.
You can look at a long list of what’s included, but what really matters is why each of those pieces makes a meaningful difference while you’re actually onboard.
Scenic River Cruises Are Truly All-Inclusive
What’s included: Scenic is one of the few river cruise lines that genuinely delivers an all-inclusive experience. From the moment you step onboard, nearly everything is covered — no constant add-ons, upsells, or surprise charges.
Why it matters: On my Danube sailing, I never once had to think about what something “cost extra.” That freedom changes how you travel. You relax more, say yes to experiences you might not have considered, and focus on enjoying the journey instead of managing a budget.
All Dining, All Day
What’s included:
Multiple dining venues onboard
À la carte fine dining
Casual options for breakfast and lunch
Regional dishes inspired by the destinations
In-suite dining
Why it matters: Dining on Scenic is straightforward and consistent. Meals are paced comfortably, there’s no pressure to upgrade, and the experience feels reliable day after day. On the Danube, the menus reflected the regions we were sailing through in subtle ways — enough to give context to the journey without turning every meal into a themed event.
Unlimited Beverages, Including Premium Spirits and Wines
What’s included:
Premium wines, beer, and spirits
Champagne available throughout the day
Specialty coffees and soft drinks
Minibar in your suite, replenished daily
Why it matters: This is where Scenic quietly outshines many competitors. You don’t sign a tab or think twice about ordering a drink. Whether it’s a soda mid-day or a cocktail while watching the Danube glide by from the lounge, everything is included and convenient.
Shore Excursions in Every Port
What’s included:
At least one excursion in every port
Scenic Freechoice options (walking tours, biking, cultural experiences)
Expert local guides
Transportation to and from excursions
Why it matters: Excursions are part of the overall experience, not treated as add-ons. On my sailing, I chose experiences I probably wouldn’t have booked on my own — not because they weren’t appealing, but because they’re outside my usual comfort zone. And they ended up being highlights of the entire trip.
Scenic Enrich Events — Exclusive Cultural Experiences
What’s included:
Private concerts
Exclusive evening events not open to the public
Carefully curated cultural performances
Why it matters: These are the moments you remember long after the cruise ends. On the Danube, I attended a private concert in Vienna — a once-in-a-lifetime experience that simply can’t be replicated independently. Such a Wow Moment that I'll never forget.
Spacious Suites and Thoughtful Design
What’s included:
Suite accommodations (no true “inside” cabins)
Many suites with Scenic’s signature Scenic Sun Lounge
Butler service for higher-category suites
Daily housekeeping and turndown service
Why it matters: Often, cruise cabins are just a place to sleep, but our cabin quickly became a private retreat between ports. While sailing, I could still watch the scenery pass by from my room, with drinks and snacks in the minibar, making it easy to relax privately instead of heading to a shared lounge.
Transfers, Gratuities, and Little Details People Forget
What’s included:
Airport transfers (when arriving and departing on scheduled days)
All onboard gratuities
E-bikes for independent exploring
Wi-Fi throughout the ship
Why it matters: On other cruises, transfers, gratuities, and extra fees can quickly add stress or surprise costs. On Scenic, all of that is already included, which makes the trip feel smoother and allows you to focus on enjoying the journey instead of worrying about details.
So, Why Does All of This Matter?
Because luxury isn’t just about what you get — it’s about how the experience feels.
After sailing the Danube with Scenic, what stood out most wasn’t any single inclusion. It was the consistency. Every part of the journey felt considered, seamless, and genuinely elevated. There was no moment where I felt I needed to opt in, upgrade, or double-check the fine print.
For travelers who value comfort, cultural depth, and ease — especially those new to river cruising — Scenic’s inclusions remove guesswork and replace it with confidence. And I loved that.
