USA Road Trip — Yosemite, Canyons & Camping
Are you on a mission to see the best scenery on the west coast? Well, we certainly have the trip for you. This 13-day adventure will get you up close and personal with not one, but five of some of the most popular national parks in the United States. Embark on hikes in Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Yosemite all while enjoying yourself and making memories with your newest travel buddies. We think it’s time to treat yourself to something special, something that will allow you to get back out there and experience the beautiful world we live in. It’s easy to have the time of your life camping in the desert, eating pizza along the rim of the Grand Canyon, seeing the wild landscapes of Yosemite, and surfing along one of southern California’s beaches. The hardest part won’t be deciding if you should go, it will be when you have to come home.
Highlights
Hike the amazing Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, Catch a few waves with a surf lesson in southern California, Visit the strange rock formations in Joshua Tree National Park, Enjoy a drive down Route 66, Have a pizza dinner along the rim of the Grand Canyon during sunset, Hike in the Grand Canyon, Visit Horseshoe Bend, Enjoy stargazing and nights sitting around the campfire as a group.
Accomodation
Accommodation will be varied throughout your adventure. Most of the nights on tour are spent camping in tents in public and private campgrounds, but we will also use permanent canvas tents, twin-share rooms in hostels, and simple motels.
Please be aware that American campgrounds have various sites available and because of this there will likely be RVs, camper-trailers, popups and tent camping all on one property.
All camping equipment (with the exception of your sleeping bag and pillow) is supplied, including comfortable camp mattresses. We supply dome tents that take only 5 minutes to assemble/disassemble. They are good quality, durable, industry-standard, oversized 2-person tents, each with 2 separate and convenient zip-up doors, so that each person has his/her own entrance.
We use 2 types of campgrounds in North America:
1. Private campgrounds: These are privately run sites, usually with all services such as fire pits, picnic tables, drinking water, toilets & shower buildings. Some have small outdoor swimming pools and laundry facilities. These campgrounds are typically located near national park entrances or towns.
2. Public campgrounds: These are park-run sites, usually with basic facilities such as fire pits, picnic tables, and drinking water. In some cases, this type of campground doesn’t have showers, only pit toilets and a lake! In other locations, toilet and shower facilities may be located outside the campground, or at times in another location a drive away. Some may have shower fees for onsite facilities ($2-6/shower).
Group Leader
This G Adventures group trip is accompanied by one of our group leaders, otherwise known as a Chief Experience Officer (CEO). The CEO will be the group manager, leader and sometimes the driver - this person is knowledgeable in the routes travelled and will organize and lead the meal preparations and has experience in cooking a variety of local and international dishes for large groups.
As the group coordinator and manager, the aim of the CEO is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. They will also offer suggestions for things to do and to see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends.
While our CEOs are trained and have resources to assist them along the way, the United States is the fourth largest country on the planet, and it is impossible for them to know everything about this massive country. We recommend local guides where we think more specific knowledge will add to the enjoyment of the places we are visiting - we think it's the best of both worlds.
Please note that specific tour guide licenses are required to guide in certain cities and regions, and as such, our CEOs will oftentimes provide brief orientation walks or drives to point out useful places like supermarkets, main squares and ATMs but for more specific or in depth destination information, an official guided tour is recommended.

Perched atop a hilly peninsula, overlooking the blue waters of the bay is the great city of San Francisco, known for its characteristically charming and colorful people, architecture and culture. While the city is geographically small in size, San Francisco is the core city of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is a far larger area on the map stretching around the bay and including all of the surrounding bay cities like Oakland and San Jose. San Francisco can easily be dubbed as eccentric with its counter culture ways from the 60s still alive today. The arts scene reigns supreme in San Francisco and the city plays host to an outstanding array of art museums, galleries, critically acclaimed restaurants, and other artistic and cultural venues and events that keep the city lively for both its residents and visitors.
The seven-by-seven square mile city on the bay is made up of a patchwork of very distinct neighborhoods and districts, each with their own unique culture, look and feel. The iconic Golden Gate Bridge stretches across the bay to where it meets the city along the Presidio, which is a military compound turned national park. To the east is the popular Golden Gate district with its chic neighborhoods, historic fishing marinas and fantastic views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Fisherman's Wharf is located at the northeastern tip of the peninsula and is where the tourists flock, and for good reason as many boat tours of the bay and to Alcatraz start here. Along the Wharf, there are plenty of kitschy souvenir shops in addition to San Francisco staples such as Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square along the picturesque waterfront. Arching around the tip of the peninsula to the east along the San Francisco Bay are the vibrant communities of Chinatown and North Beach. Chinatown is famous as being the largest Chinatown outside of Asia and is a colorful neighborhood with crowds of immigrant residents, a plethora of authentic Chinese cuisine and a great place to feel transported to another world altogether. Right next door is North Beach, known as Little Italy for its similar immigrant community and characteristic Italian cuisine. Other notable neighborhoods throughout the city include the business center of Union Square, the Financial District, Haight-Ashbury known for its hippie roots, the Castro known for its largely GLTB residents and gay-friendly community, and SoMa (South of Market) features a lot of new construction, museums and AT&T park where the San Francisco Giants baseball team plays.
San Francisco also has a great network of outer lying cities and towns, all of which make for great getaways from the city. Wine country to the north is some of the best in the world with Sonoma, Napa and St. Helena to name a few. Just across the bridge is the scenic Mill Valley, chic Sausalito and nature-filled Mout Tamalpais and Muir Beach areas. Over the bay to the east are Oakland and Berkeley, while due south is the tech-crazed Silicon Valley with cities including Palo Alto (home to Stanford), Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Jose.
From May to October, the average temperature is 62° F and from November to April, the average temperature is 51° F
