Spotlight on Vienna, Austria | |
There is no other place in the world where imperial splendor and a hip modern lifestyle are combined with such ease and elegance as in Vienna. The city of “bon viveurs” seduces visitors with an intriguing blend of old and new in all areas of city life. Viennese top chefs have adapted traditional recipes to modern standards and now serve “New Austrian Cuisine” in stylish restaurants. The city’s museums such as the Albertina and the Liechtenstein Museum are showcasing centuries of art history in newly renovated and sophisticated surroundings. And modern architectural highlights, such as the “Haas Haus” which reflects the image of venerable St. Stephen’s Cathedral in its mirrored façade, blend in smoothly with the historic cityscape. Vienna is truly a city where arts and enjoyments are an integral part of life. The historical centre of the Danube metropolis and Schönbrunn Palace have both been recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritages, which makes it easy for you to decide which sights to choose on your first visit to Vienna. The geographical and historical center of the city is the 137-meter-high Gothic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, with Western Europe’s second largest bell in its North Tower. In the extensive pedestrian precinct in the district surrounding Austria’s foremost cathedral you will find dozens of designer flagship stores as well as tradition steeped Viennese shops, many of which once produced goods for the emperor him-self. Cozy coffee-houses and trendy bistros are perfect places to relax in after a busy shopping spree. Or you can enjoy the laidback atmosphere of Vienna’s “Heurigers”, the inviting wine taverns on the outskirts of the city. With its delightful park, Baroque palace and zoo (the world’s oldest), Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs, will be the stunning highlight of your sightseeing. The palace and adjoining buildings contain more than 1,400 rooms, and guided tours of varying length enable you to visit up to 40 of the palace’s staterooms. The Viennese love to party all year round, especially with their guests. The year begins with the New Year's Trail in the old city of Vienna, with a colorful program of music and entertainment until the early hours of New Year's Day. In January and February, this is followed by the traditional ball season with over 300 balls, including the Vienna Opera Ball at the Vienna State Opera. The Vienna Festival in May and June features theater and music productions, and at the end of June there is the Danube Island Festival, Europe's biggest open-air party, admission free. From the beginning of July till the beginning of September, the free Music Film Festival on Rathausplatz in front of the City Hall has a program of classical music and jazz films on a giant screen. And from the end of November, the delightful magic of Vienna’s Advent markets puts the city’s visitors in a Christmas mood. Local Events
