If you desire a more in-depth discovery of the Peranakan culture, visit the neighbourhoods of Joo Chiat/Katong. *The term is an Indonesian/Malay word that means “local born”, which generally refers to people of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage. Indulge in epicurean eats at CHIJMES Now a popular haven that comprises many acclaimed dining establishments, CHIJMES stands for the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School. This former convent and Catholic girls school is the second oldest building still standing in Singapore. March into the grand splendour of CHIJMES Hall, just like Araminta did during her wedding scene in the movie. Officially recognised as a national monument in 1990, CHIJMES is where visitors should keep a lookout for unique tropical flora and birds, which embellish the 648 capitals of this Gothic marvel. Superlatives abound in this place, which sports the world’s largest greenhouse, called the Flower Dome, and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, which can be admired within the climate-controlled Cloud Forest. As daylight fades, head down to Supertree Grove, where they will be dazzled by the Garden Rhapsody lightshow that is held against these majestic tree structures, displaying daily at 7.45pm and 8.45pm.
