Located on the heel of Italy's boot, Brindisi played an important maritime role for the Romans, but it was originally an ancient Greek settlement.

Many visitors to Brindisi pass through en route to the ferry to either Greece or Albania. However, several fascinating churches, a couple of castles, the historic town center or a visit to the place where Roman poet Virgil died in 19 BC can help travelers enjoy the wait for the next ferry.

In particular, visit the 11th-century cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo, with its mosaics and bell tower, the Roman Column on Via Colonne, leading to the waterfront promenade, and the display at the Museo Archaeologico Provinciale Ribezzo in the Piazza del Duomo.

One of Italy's southernmost ferry ports on the Adriatic Sea, Brindisi offers ferries to the Greek Islands of Corfu and Zante as well as other major Greek ports.

The ferry terminal is accessible by bus or taxi from the train station. Year-round ferry companies include Agoudimos Lines and Endeavor Lines. Buses run regularly between the ferry terminal and the Brindisi Airport.

The old port of Brindisi is 1 mi/1 km from the train station along the Corso Umberto I, and the new port is on the east side of town in Costa Morena, with buses running there regularly from the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. One such excursion is about an hour away to Alberobello, a picture-perfect town full of cone-shaped stone buildings called trulli, dating to the 16th century.

The trip includes a walking tour within the old city center, then on to Cisternino for a visit to a modern olive oil press for a tour and tasting. Each of these excursions takes about five hours total.

Another possibility is an hour's drive through the Apulian countryside to the quaint town of Lecce, nicknamed Florence of the South. Once you arrive, a private tourist trolley takes you on an hour-long scenic ride to the major sites in Lecce with its Baroque architecture, including the Roman Amphitheater at Piazza St. Orzono and the impressive Carlo V castle, built in 1539. This excursion takes about four hours total.
