Description:

Kotagede is one Yogyakarta’s most historic and important villages, and you can explore why on this fascinating bike tour. Breeze through the village to see Javanese arts and culture, sample a traditional snack, and visit markets and notable sites, as you gain insight into customary village life.

After a convenient hotel pickup, head to Kotagede village, which is renowned for its silver crafting and for being the former capital of the Mataram kingdom. Hop aboard your comfortable 2-wheeled mode of transport, and cruise down the winding pathways, passing by silver craft shops and kalang-style buildings—typical of the area—on your way to a local bakery. Here, you have the chance to try kembang waru, a sweet biscuit that is prominent in the village, and learn about its simple recipe and cooking method.

Continue through Market Place, an important historic site in the village. Explore this once-buzzing square of the Mataram Empire before visiting Kotagede Mosque. As the oldest mosque on the island, it boasts authentic Javanese architecture and provides and insight into ancient Java history, which dates back to 1575.
